Veteran Journalist Emin Madi Says Receiving PGDK Award Great Honour For Him And Bernama
Emin, 75, said the PGDK, which carries the title 'Datuk' is also seen as a very high recognition from the Sabah government to Bernama as a whole, especially the Sabah bureau staff who operate in the state.
"I am very grateful, and thankful, to the state government for this award to journalists in Sabah. I believe many more journalists and writers deserve an award like this," he said to Bernama here today.
Emin was met after the 2025 Sabah State Honours and Awards investiture ceremony held at Istana Seri Kinabalu today (June 21) where 60 individuals received their respective awards conferred by Yang Dipertua Negeri Sabah Tun Musa Aman.
Also present at the event was Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor and a line-up of state government leaders.
Apart from Emin, two other Bernama Sabah bureau staff members, namely the head of the bureau, Fadzli Ramli, who was awarded the Ahli Darjah Kinabalu (ADK), and Sabah bureau photographer Zamain Singkui, who was awarded the Bintang Setia Kinabalu (BSK), will receive their awards in the next session (of the ceremony), the date of which is yet to be confirmed.
Born in Tambunan on Nov 29, 1949, Emin began his career as a journalist in the 1970s before becoming an editor at a local newspaper, "The Sabah Times", and served as the press secretary to the former Minister of Land and Cooperative Development, Tan Sri Kasitah Gaddam.
Emin, a father of two, has been with Bernama since the 1990s and has written various articles in both Malay and English, as well as novels including "Salarom" and "The Green Gold of Borneo".
"Salarom" won third place in the Sayembara Penulisan Novel Sempena 50 Tahun Merdeka competition, organised by Dewan Bahasa Dan Pustaka, in 2007 where there were no first- or second-place winners. The novel was published in 2008.

The acquisition will include two Maritime Patrol Aircraft designated for the Royal Malaysian Navy. Additionally, Malaysia also plans to procure 28 Leonardo AW149 helicopters, while the Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri is expected to supply multi-role support ships (MRSS) and littoral mission ships (LMS). These defence assets will help strengthen Malaysia's longstanding bilateral ties with Italy, renowned for its advanced military industry, Anwar said at his exit press conference at the conclusion of his three-day official visit to Italy Thursday (July 3). Meanwhile, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, who accompanied the Prime Minister on the visit, added that details of the procurement would be finalised to ensure Malaysia benefits from areas such as centralised training and other cooperative opportunities. Initially, operations for the maritime patrol aircraft are expected to be based out of Batu Berendam Airport in Melaka, he noted. Mohamed Khaled also said Malaysia has proposed that the acquisitions be carried out through government-to-government (G2G) agreements. "This approach will help us secure better pricing and asset guarantees directly from the Italian Government," he explained. The Defence Ministry has also recommended exploring new areas of collaboration between the two countries in the defence sector, including artificial intelligence (AI) and underwater security command centres. Anwar arrived here on Tuesday (July 1) for a maiden official visit at the invitation of his Italian counterpart, Georgia Meloni. This is part of Anwar's three-nation visits to Italy, France and Brazil, which form part of Malaysia's ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral relations and promote economic cooperation at the global level. China, Russia to sign SEANWFZ treaty, US reviewing: Mohamad
KUALA LUMPUR: China and Russia have agreed to become signatories to the South-East Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone Treaty (SEANWFZ), while the United States is currently reviewing the treaty before signing, Malaysian Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan (pic) said. He said the involvement of superpowers in the treaty would help preserve South-East Asia as a region of peace, free of nuclear weapons. "We have established South-East Asia as a peaceful region and next week, the foreign ministers (of relevant countries) will meet,' he said at Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's engagement session with the Malaysian diaspora in Italy held in Rome on Tuesday (July 1). The session was held in conjunction with the prime minister's three-day working visit to Italy. A video recording of the session was shared with Bernama on Wednesday. SEANWFZ, also known as the Bangkok Treaty, was signed in December 1995 in Bangkok by ten Asean member countries. It came into effect in March 1997. The protocol of the treaty commits Nuclear Weapon States (NWS) to respect SEANWFZ and not contribute to any act that violates the treaty and its protocols; to not use or threaten to use nuclear weapons against states in the zone; and to not use or threaten to use nuclear weapons within the zone. Malaysia will host the 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting (58th AMM) and Related Meetings, which will take place at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) from July 8 to 11. Malaysia took over the Asean Chairmanship on January 1, 2025, from Laos with the theme 'Inclusivity and Sustainability', reflecting the country's commitment to fostering a united and prosperous Asean. Over 5,000 police personnel on duty for Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting from July 8 to 11
KUALA LUMPUR: The police have deployed 5,121 personnel to ensure the smooth and safe organisation of the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) and Related Meetings to be held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) from July 8 to 11. Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department (KDNKA) director Datuk Seri Azmi Abu Kassim said the PDRM had drawn up a detailed security plan and would be carrying out continuous monitoring to ensure the meeting ran smoothly and in an orderly manner. "The police has taken appropriate measures to ensure high preparedness ahead of this meeting, and the main focus is on the security of VIPs, traffic control and handling emergencies. "This team will also use sophisticated technology such as facial recognition systems and explosives detection to ensure the event runs smoothly," he told Bernama here Thursday (July 3). Azmi said police would combine the forces of various departments and units, including the Kuala Lumpur Police Contingent Headquarters (IPK), Management Department, Federal Reserve Force, Special Operations Unit (UTK), 69 Commando and Special Branch. He stated that, apart from the main meeting location, security controls were also extended to other important areas, including Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and Subang Airport. "Security control will also be implemented at the delegates' accommodation locations and certain zones around the delegation arrival area, which will be gazetted as restricted or semi-restricted areas with limited access given to certain individuals only," he said.
