Elon Musk reignites feud with Sam Altman after OpenAI controversy surfaces
Elon Musk has once again directed public criticism toward OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, calling him 'Scam Altman' in a recent post on the social media platform X. The comment came shortly after the release of The OpenAI Files, a report raising concerns about OpenAI's governance, profit model, and safety practices. Musk framed his remark as a reaction to the revelations outlined in the report.
Musk and Altman, both prominent figures in the tech and artificial intelligence sectors, share a history as co-founders of OpenAI. Musk served on OpenAI's board from its founding in 2015 until stepping down in 2018. He has since criticized the company's evolution from a non-profit research lab to a 'capped-profit' model, arguing that the move contradicts OpenAI's original mission of promoting safe and open AI development.
In addition to their involvement in AI, both Musk and Altman have been vocal supporters of cryptocurrency, adding another dimension to their public personas and influence in the tech world. Musk, who leads Tesla, SpaceX, and X, has long promoted digital assets such as Bitcoin and Dogecoin. Tesla holds over $1 billion in Bitcoin, and Musk's public endorsements of Dogecoin have often impacted its market price.
Altman, similarly, has expressed support for Bitcoin, describing it as a critical technological step during a 2023 appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience. He also launched the cryptocurrency Worldcoin in 2019, with a focus on decentralized identity and finance.
Musk's recent criticism comes amid broader industry debates over the future of artificial intelligence. Centralized models, like those used by OpenAI, have been criticized for concentrating power and limiting transparency. Decentralized alternatives, often supported by crypto infrastructure, are being explored as a counterbalance.

FRANKFURT: Germany has taken steps towards blocking Chinese AI startup DeepSeek from the Apple and Google app stores due to concerns about data protection, according to a data protection authority commissioner in a statement on Friday. DeepSeek has been reported to the two U.S. tech giants as illegal content, said commissioner Meike Kamp, and the companies must now review the concerns and decide whether to block the app in Germany. 'DeepSeek has not been able to provide my agency with convincing evidence that German users' data is protected in China to a level equivalent to that in the European Union,' she said. DeepSeek, which shook the technology world in January with claims that it had developed an AI model that rivaled those from U.S. firms such as ChatGPT creator OpenAI at much lower cost, says it stores numerous personal data, such as requests to the AI or uploaded files, on computers in China.

Xiaomi launches YU7, undercutting Tesla's Model Y on price
BEIJING: Chinese EV and smartphone maker Xiaomi on Thursday priced its new electric YU7 SUV from 253,500 yuan ($35,364), almost 4% below Tesla's Model Y, stepping up the challenge to the U.S. firm in the world's largest auto market. The YU7's base model costs 10,000 yuan less than the starting price of Tesla's Model Y in China, with the more premium models YU7 Pro and YU7 Max priced at 279,900 and 329,900 yuan respectively. Xiaomi started taking orders for all three models on Thursday night, with orders hitting 200,000 in 3 minutes after the sale started at 10 p.m. (1400 GMT) The Model Y, which was China's best-selling SUV in May, starts at 263,500 yuan in China. Xiaomi said it will partner with BYD, GAC Toyota and Zhengzhou Nissan to build an ecosystem connecting humans, homes and cars. EV hopes hit by China rare earths curbs Xiaomi's CEO and founder Lei Jun has said he wants the YU7 to challenge the Model Y and analysts say it has the potential to succeed. Other rivals include Zeekr's 7X and Li Auto's L6. 'The YU7 will serve as an early test of whether Xiaomi can broaden its appeal beyond early adopters and tech enthusiasts to become a serious player in the mass-market EV segment,' said Rosalie Chen, senior analyst at Third Bridge. The YU7 has a driving range of up to 835 km (519 miles) per charge, compared with up to 719 km for the redesigned Model Y that was launched in January. The YU7 is Xiaomi's second car since the Beijing-based firm entered the auto sector last year with its sporty electric SU7 sedan, which drew styling cues from Porsche and was priced below Tesla's Model 3. Since December, the SU7 has outsold Tesla's Model 3 in China on a monthly basis. The SU7's success expedites the company's EV bid despite intense competition in China's auto market. In March, Xiaomi raised its target for EV deliveries this year to 350,000 from earlier guidance of 300,000. The company has secured a plot of land in Beijing close to its existing car factory for 635 million yuan ($88 million), which it plans to use for a smart connected car and components project. Lei said in June that he expected Xiaomi's auto business to become profitable in the second half of the year.

OpenAI says China's Zhipu AI gaining ground amid Beijing's global AI push
OpenAI said on Wednesday its analysts have seen notable progress by Chinese start-up Zhipu AI in securing government contracts across several regions, signaling China's growing momentum in pursuing global AI leadership. Zhipu AI, which is backed by the Chinese Communist Party, aims to 'lock Chinese systems and standards into emerging markets before U.S. or European rivals can, while showcasing a 'responsible, transparent and audit-ready' Chinese AI alternative,' the ChatGPT maker said in its post. The company provides AI solutions — including sovereign large language model infrastructure and private hardware in partnership with Huawei — to governments and state-owned enterprises in Malaysia, Singapore, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Kenya. The initiative forms part of China's broader effort to build a self-sufficient, globally competitive AI ecosystem that rivals the United States while reducing reliance on American technology. China's DeepSeek releases an update to its R1 reasoning model Zhipu AI, which did not immediately respond to a request for comment, is supported by more than $1.4 billion in state investment and maintains strong ties with the Chinese government and state-owned entities, according to OpenAI. In January, the company was added to the U.S. Commerce Department's export control entity list, barring it from procuring U.S. components.
