Let's analyse why India should take the Kuldeep Yadav gamble in the upcoming clash despite having spin-bowling all-rounder Washington Sundar. read more
India are 0-1 down in the ongoing five-match Test series against England, and with the second Test at Edgbaston just around the corner, there is a strong buzz that India might finally play Kuldeep Yadav . It is what the pundits are saying, considering the current weather conditions in Birmingham. Spinners are expected to play a crucial role because the pitch begins to deteriorate and cracks start to open up as the match progresses.

India's assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate has already hinted at playing two spinners in the second Test. Ravindra Jadeja has his place locked in due to the quality of batting he provides. However, if India go with two spinners, they will have to choose between Kuldeep Yadav and Washington Sundar for the second spot. One is an all-rounder spinner, and the other is an out-and-out spinner.
While Sundar can be handy with the bat when needed, relying on Kuldeep for runs might be a risky option. Looking at the current form of India's lower-order batting, picking Sundar over Kuldeep might seem like the better option at the moment. One of the reasons India lost the previous Test by 5 wickets under Shubman Gill's captaincy was the lack of contribution from the tailenders.

Why India must back Kuldeep?
However, picking Kuldeep Yadav over Washington Sundar might seem like a gamble that could backfire, but looking at who has the best chance of helping India take all 20 wickets, the former should be preferred at Edgbaston. India have already suffered in the past by trying to accommodate all-rounders to extend their batting order, often weakening their bowling in the process.
Kuldeep Yadav has played just two overseas Tests in the last six years, and guess what, he has taken a five-wicket haul in both matches. One was the famous Sydney Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2019, which India drew and secured their first-ever Test series win in Australia; the other was in Chattogram in 2022, which India won by a huge margin.
Kuldeep deserves a chance after Ashwin
In the 13 Test matches that Kuldeep has played, he has taken 56 wickets at an average of 22.16, including four five-wicket hauls. The numbers don't fully reflect the skillset that the wrist-spinner brings to the table. It's not his fault because he has often been sidelined from red-ball cricket as India had two of their greatest spinners, Jadeja and R Ashwin, playing together for several years. They couldn't be overlooked due to their world-class bowling and dependable batting.

With Ashwin now out of the team, Kuldeep deserves a consistent opportunity and what better than to start on a track that is being tipped to be spinner-friendly. Kuldeep has multiple things to offer, including deceptive variations, and has proven himself on flat pitches before. In the reverse fixture against England played on flat tracks of India, Kuldeep bowled with an average of 20 and performed better than Jadeja and Ashwin.
Meanwhile, Kuldeep has also improved his batting a lot in the past couple of years. In his first seven Tests from 2017 to 2021, Kuldeep managed just 54 runs across 7 innings, with a highest score of 26. However, since his comeback to the Test side, there has been a visible shift in his approach with the bat. In the last six Tests from 2022 to 2024, Kuldeep has scored 145 runs in 9 innings, with a top score of 40.

Taking 20 wickets must be the priority
Having said that, India might still go with Sundar at the No. 8 position in the second Test, considering the twin collapses suffered by the lower order. Sundar has proven his batting skills in the past, and if the team feels they need an extra batter who can also bowl, they may be right in picking him.
But the most important thing right now is taking all 20 wickets. India's top order managed well in the previous Test even without contributions from the tailenders, and they often have, but the main issue was the bowling, as they failed to defend a 371-run target in the final innings. To avoid repeating the same mistake, they will need a full-time bowler, and Kuldeep is the better choice in that regard.

"Need lot of character to bounce back in series": Ravi Shastri ahead of Birmingham Test

Birmingham [UK], July 1 (ANI): Former India coach Ravi Shastri has urged Team India to stay positive as they look to level the five-match Test series against England in Birmingham, as per the official website of the ICC. India fell to a five-wicket loss to England in the ICC World Test Championship series opener at Headingley despite dominating much of the contest and now need to regroup quickly ahead of the must-win encounter at Edgbaston that could well determine who claims the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Questions still remain whether pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah will be risked by India for the second Test as his workload continues to be managed, while the team are also tossing up whether to include a second spinner in their line-up to help first-choice tweaker Ravindra Jadeja. Shastri is not too concerned by team selection and instead wants his former side to concentrate on playing positive cricket with good intent during the crucial Edgbaston contest. 'The most important thing for India is to throw the counter punch almost immediately,' Shastri told The ICC Review. 'When you lose a Test match like this where you have dominated most of it and then you lose it on the last day with a big chase and full marks to England for keeping their composure and doing that, it will need a lot of character to come to the fore and to bounce back in the series,' he added, as quoted from ICC. 'Now, whether Bumrah plays or doesn't play, one doesn't know. But let's hope he does because this is a very important Test match and all is not lost,' he noted. 'It's just you take it one game at a time. It's a five-match series and India will be hoping to bounce back,' Shastri added. Shastri believes newly appointed skipper Shubman Gill will have learnt plenty from India's loss in the series opener and expects the young leader to be more proactive for the remainder of the series. 'People say he was a little reactive and it can happen when you're playing your first Test match (as captain) and especially in such good batting conditions with a fast outfield and things can happen in that way,' Shastri said. 'But he would have learnt a lot from that and will want to be a little more proactive when it comes now, which means the bowlers and the fielders will have to give him that support,' he noted. 'They have got to know what their role is and get out there and execute it,' he said. (ANI)

India Coach Pulls Off WWE Move On Arshdeep Singh Ahead Of 2nd Test. Pacer Explains Reason

As Team India prepare to play the second Test against England, a new ritual seems to have taken shape during their training sessions. In a light-hearted video shared by BCCI, bowling coach Morne Morkel was seen attempting a wrestling move on pacer Arshdeep Singh. Soon after, fellow pacer Akash Deep teamed up with Arshdeep to perform their own wrestling move on the former South African pacer. All smiles, Arshdeep explained exactly why Morkel had pulled off a wrestling stunt on him. "Morne said that once practice is over, I'll do the 'pin out' move on you to signal the end of the session," Arshdeep said, in the video shared by BCCI. The video showed Morkel rolling Arshdeep over and pinning him down, a move commonly seen in WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment). "This is his new way of calling off the day. That is what he was showing us today," Arshdeep explained. The video then showed Arshdeep and Akash Deep returning the favour to Morkel, taking down Morkel together. Akash Deep and Arshdeep are both in contention to feature for Team India during the five-match Test series against England, with at least one of them all set to be in India's playing XI in the second Test at Edgbaston. Team India are set to rest pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah in the second Test as part of his workload management. As a result, a spot has opened up in the pace attack for the second Test. As per journalists present in England, Akash Deep had a full-fledged session just two days ahead of the match, hinting that he could be the one to take Bumrah's spot. Akash Deep has played seven Test matches so far in his career, taking 15 wickets. His last appearance came in the Boxing Day Test against Australia in December 2024. Arshdeep, on the other hand, is yet to make his Test debut. The 26-year-old is India's highest wicket-taker in T20I cricket, and has been included in India's Test scheme for the first time in this tour. "He (Bumrah) is available for the game, obviously. We know from the start he's only going to play three out of the five. He's had eight days to recover from the last Test. But given conditions, workload, and how we think we can best manage for the next four games, we haven't made a call on that," said assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate in a press conference ahead of the second Test. "We're going to see what the other guys are doing with their workload as well. So technically, yes, he's available. But we haven't made a decision on whether he's going to play or not yet," ten Doeschate said to reporters in the press conference on Monday.
