One of those footballers remains in a critical condition eight days after being hit by the car on the flyover.
The driver, Vijay Desai, son of a serving police head constable of Ahmedabad Rural police, Vaghji Desai, was arrested after a delayed investigation that has drawn public criticism. The incident occurred around 12.30am on May 14 near the mall. Andre Rahul Bhatia, a former St Xavier's football team captain, was hit from behind while riding his two-wheeler.
The car did not stop. Bhatia was left unconscious on the road, suffering a brain haemorrhage, fractures, and serious facial injuries.
He is currently on ventilator support in a private hospital's ICU.
Bhatia's family has launched a crowdfunding campaign seeking Rs 30 lakh for his treatment, citing financial distress. His sister has also appealed for help through online platforms. Despite the severity of the case, it took police eight days to make the arrest.
Investigators recovered a broken Mercedes logo at the crash site and contacted the manufacturer's Mumbai office. That led them to the original car owner, who confirmed selling the vehicle three months ago to Vijay Desai for Rs 18.5 lakh.
Phone location data placed Vijay Desai at the scene of the crash, prompting police to arrest him.
The delayed arrest has led to concerns about alleged preferential treatment due to the accused's family background. Inspector R V Vinchhi of SG-1 traffic division said that Vijay was arrested after collecting evidence against him, including phone location data.

ED conducts fresh searches in Mithi river desilting scam, freezes Rs 47 crore

The Enforcement Directorate (ED), Mumbai Zonal office, conducted follow-up search operations at eight locations across Mumbai on Thursday in connection with an ongoing investigation in the Mithi river desilting scam. The searches covered office / residential premises linked to BMC contractors namely M/s Acute Designs, M/s Kailash Construction Company, M/s Nikhil Construction Co, M/s N A Construction Pvt Ltd, M/s JRS Infrastructure and BMC engineer Prashant Krishna Tayshete. The searches led to freezing of more than Rs 47 crore in multiple bank accounts, Fixed Deposits and Demat accounts. Further, certain digital devices, records pertaining to various immovable properties and incriminating documents have been seized, an ED officer said. The ED initiated investigation on the basis of an FIR lodged on May 6 at Azad Maidan police atation, Mumbai, under various sections of IPC against 13 individuals / entities, including the above-mentioned individuals / entities, for causing wrongful loss of over Rs 65 crore to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The evidence collected during the course of investigation and the search operations prima facie indicate various irregularities in the works related to desilting of Mithi River by the said contractors in connivance with officials of BMC's SWD department and others. The accused BMC contractors had allegedly submitted various false documents, including MoUs from landowners and NOCs from respective gram panchayats for lands purportedly used for silt dumping. The investigation has also revealed that BMC officials also misused their positions for financial gains in procurement and use of Silt Pusher and Multipurpose Amphibious Pontoon Machines introduced in the tenders for desilting of Mithi River in 2021-22. Earlier, the ED carried out searches at 18 locations on June 6. The total value of Proceeds of Crime (POC) seized / frozen in the case now stands at Rs 49.8 crore (approximately).

Former MP Prajwal Revanna gets life imprisonment in 2021 rape case

Prajwal Revanna, former MP and grandson of former prime minister H D Deve Gowda, was on Saturday sentenced to life imprisonment by a special court in Bengaluru in a 2021 rape case. The special court for MPs/MLAs Judge Santosh Gajanan Bhat also imposed a total fine of ₹10 lakh on the suspended Janata Dal (Secular) leader. The court said that the victim will be given a compensation of Rs 7 lakh. The court had on Friday convicted Revanna in one of the four sexual abuse and rape cases registered against him. This case pertains to the rape of a 48-year-old woman, who was working as domestic help at the family's Gannikada farmhouse in Holenarasipura, Hassan district. She was raped twice, at the farmhouse in Hassan and at a residence in Bengaluru, in 2021, according to a report by PTI. "...they say that I have raped multiple women, but none of the women have come out voluntarily to complain, they came six days prior to election (Lok Sabha polls last year)... the prosecution side brought them purposefully and made them file a complaint," Prajwal told the court. Pointing out that the woman had not informed anyone, including her husband or relatives, about the rape, he said she came forward with a complaint only after certain videos were circulated.
