Unhealthy smoke from Canadian wildfires blankets the Upper Midwest when people want to be outside

Independent20 hours ago
Much of the Upper Midwest on Saturday was dealing with swaths of unhealthy air due to drifting smoke from Canadian wildfires, covering the northern region of the U.S. at a time when people want to be enjoying lakes, trails and the great outdoors.
Most of Minnesota and parts of Montana, North Dakota and Wisconsin were ranked 'unhealthy' for air quality on a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency map. Part of North Dakota that is home to Theodore Roosevelt National Park and other tourist attractions was ranked 'very unhealthy,' some of the worst air quality in the nation.
In Minnesota, 'If you have a nice pork loin you can hang from a tree, it'll turn into ham,' quipped Al Chirpich, owner of the Hideaway Resort near Detroit Lakes, where people come to enjoy tree-lined Island Lake for fishing and other water activities.
Normally there would be boats and jet skis all over, but on Saturday he couldn't see a boat on the lake, where the smoke impaired visibility and curtailed his camper business. None of his 18 RV sites was occupied. His seven rental cabins drew a handful of customers.
'I suspect when the weather clears, we'll be swamped again. Fourth of July, I had probably 20 boats here lined up at my docks, and today my boat is the only one,' Chirpich said.
The conditions started Friday, dragging smoke from the Canadian wildfires down to the surface, said National Weather Service Meteorologist Jennifer Ritterling, in Grand Forks. Periods of bad air quality are expected to last through the weekend in the region, she said.
Limiting time outdoors, keeping windows closed and running air purifiers are good ideas for people with lung conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and even healthy people, Ritterling said.
'Our summers up here are fairly short and so everyone wants to get out and enjoy them, and it's a little frustrating when there's this smoke in the air,' she said.
All of Manitoba is under a state of emergency due to the wildfires, which have led to 12,600 people evacuating their homes in the province. The fires in Manitoba have burned over 3,861 square miles (10,000 square kilometers), the most land burned in 30 years of electronic recordkeeping, the news outlet reported. Under 1,000 people have evacuated their homes in Saskatchewan, where wildfires also continue to burn.
In Arizona, the North Rim in Grand Canyon National Park is still closed due to a 2.3 square-mile (6.1 square-kilometer) wildfire and another fire nearby on Bureau of Land Management land that has burned nearly 17 square miles (44 square kilometers).
In Colorado, Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park remains closed due to a 4.4 square mile (11.3 square kilometer) wildfire burning on the South Rim of the park, known for its dramatic, steep cliffs. Crews have been fighting the fire on multiple sides to stop it from spreading.
The fires in and near both national parks led to evacuations of hundreds of people.
Chirpich, the Minnesota resort owner, said he has plans to go to Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park on Thursday and is 'a bit pensive about how that's going to be there.'
'I'm going to leave one smokehouse for another, I guess,' he said.

Emergency crews suspend search for Texas flooding victims amid new rain warnings

Emergency crews suspended their search for victims of catastrophic flooding in Texas amid new warnings that additional rain would again cause waterways to surge. It was the first time a new round of severe weather has paused the search since the flooding earlier this month. Advertisement Ingram Fire Department officials ordered search crews to immediately evacuate the Guadalupe River corridor in Kerr County until further notice on Sunday, warning the potential for a flash flood is high. Search-and-rescue teams have been searching for missing victims of the July 4 weekend flooding. Search and rescue efforts were expected to resume on Monday, depending on river flow, fire department spokesman Brian Lochte said. 'We're working with a few crews and airboats and SAR (search-and-rescue) boats just in case,' Mr Lochte said. Advertisement As heavy rain fell on Sunday, National Weather Service forecasters warned that the Guadalupe River could rise to nearly 15 feet (4.6 meters) by Sunday afternoon, about five feet above flood stage and enough to put the Highway 39 bridge near Hunt under water. 'Numerous secondary roads and bridges are flooded and very dangerous,' a weather service warning said. The destructive, fast-moving waters rose 26 feet (eight meters) on the Guadalupe River in just 45 minutes before daybreak on July 4, washing away homes and vehicles. Ever since, searchers have used helicopters, boats and drones to look for victims and to rescue people stranded in trees and from camps isolated by washed-out roads. Advertisement The floods laid waste to the Hill Country region of Texas. The riverbanks and hills of Kerr County are filled with vacation cabins, youth camps and campgrounds, including Camp Mystic, the century-old all-girls Christian summer camp. Located in a low-lying area along the Guadalupe River in a region known as flash flood alley, Camp Mystic lost at least 27 campers and counsellors as well as owner Dick Eastland. The flood was far more severe than the 100-year event envisioned by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, experts said, and moved so quickly in the middle of the night that it caught many off guard in a county that lacked a warning system. Enzo Fernandez's partner leads Chelsea WAGs in flocking to the US to cheer on their partners in Club World Cup final as they take in the New York sights before kick off

Chelsea WAGs have descended on New York as their partners prepare for this evening's Club World Cup final. The Blues jetted off to the USA last month to take part in the inaugural edition of FIFA's premier club tournament since it was revamped to include 32 teams. Since then, Enzo Maresca 's side have progressed through the group stages and subsequently defeated the likes of Benfica, Palmeiras and Fluminense to book their place in the final. Their opponents at the MetLife Stadium on Sunday are a PSG side awash with confidence after entering the tournament just one month after being crowned Champions League winners for the first time in their history. Luis Enrique's side have been utterly dominant throughout the Club World Cup, and have conceded just once in their run to the final. Ahead of the landmark clash, a number of Chelsea stars have been joined by their partners as they have taken in the sights and enjoyed some precious downtime between games in the United States. It is understood that many of the group flew out once Chelsea reached the knockout stages as the club held a team bonding BBQ at their Miami base. Since then, a number of the WAGs, including Enzo Fernandez's girlfriend Valentina Cervantes have remained with the group as they moved on to New York to prepare for Sunday's final. On Saturday Cervantes shared a snap of herself watching a Blues training session as Maresca put his finishing touches on the game plan for the clash with Les Parisiens. Meanwhile, the partners of Pedro Neto, Marc Cucurella and Filip Jorgensen took to the streets of the Big Apple to do some sightseeing. Neto's girlfriend, Carolina Cunha e Silva, even donned a baseball jersey adorned with the Portuguese foward's name as the Blues defeated Fluminense. Cole Palmer also took in some of the famous sights, with the England international pictured in full Blues kit atop the famous Rockefeller Center in Midtown Manhattan. Reports suggest that Maresca has offered his players a high degree of freedom throughout the competition. Maintaining professionalism has remained an imperative, but the players have been entrusted to enjoy some downtime following an arduous campaign. In addition, the club are said to have brought in FA staff to organise the team's camp including accommodation and activities for the players' families. Meanwhile Cole Palmer ascended the city's iconic Rockefeller Center for a photoshoot Speaking ahead of the clash with PSG, Maresca revealed he intends on treating the upcoming fixture 'like a chess match' and called Luis Enrique's side, 'the best team in the world'. 'I love to play chess and watch chess,' Maresca explained. 'I feel football is like a game of chess and when the rival makes a move, you have to counteract it and I think this will be like a chess game. 'They [PSG] are a top team in Europe and the world, maybe the best in the world, but every game is different and we will try to do a good game. 'For sure it will be difficult, but all games are difficult. Fluminense beat Inter and they reached the Champions League final; Al Hilal beat Manchester City. 'Botafogo beat PSG in this competition and did a very good job, but our style is different to Botafogo. 'PSG is best team in world and they have showed that in this tournament, showed it in France and in the Champions League. Of course it'll be a difficult game for us, but we are preparing ourselves in best way possible.
