Some £1.2million was split by five innocent cons between 2015 and 2020 while another two have shared £1.99million in the last five years.
Payouts are granted when new evidence shows 'beyond reasonable doubt' inmates were wrongly convicted — or there was a 'serious default' or error by cops or authorities.
Scottish Labour warned Nats ministers' 'neglect' of the system could lead to taxpayers stumping up for more payouts.
Justice spokeswoman Pauline McNeill said: 'One case of wrongful imprisonment is too many and every effort must be made to prevent these miscarriages of justice occurring.
'That is why it is extremely important to closely scrutinise any changes to the criminal justice system to ensure they do not risk creating miscarriages of justice.'
She added: 'There is a real risk that the pressure on our justice system caused by SNP neglect and the dwindling number of defence lawyers could contribute to this problem.
'First and foremost, we must try to prevent miscarriages of justice because of the human cost, but there are also millions being taken from frontline services to pay for these appalling mistakes.'
Scotland's most famous miscarriages of justice include Patrick Meehan who received a royal pardon after being wrongfully convicted of the 1969 murder of Rachael Ross in Ayr.
In 1973, Stuart Gair was wrongfully jailed for the murder of Margaret McLaughlin in Carluke.
And Joe Steele spent 18 years in jail for the Ice Cream War murders after being wrongly convicted of starting a fire which killed six members of the Doyle family in 1984.

Ministers across the UK have also been forced to apologise for the wrongful prosecution of hundreds of Post Office subpostmasters - some of whom served jail sentences.

Two Scots appear in court in connection with £26m cocaine seizure in Ireland

Two Scottish men have appeared in an Irish court in connection with a £26m cocaine seizure off the coast of Ireland. Mark Doherty, 40, of Glasgow, and Ben Sandford, 40, of Moray, faced the charges at Bandon District Court, County Cork, along with two other suspects on Thursday. They appeared alongside Levent Gulay, 31, of Bavaria, Germany, and Christopher Hibbit, 44, from Cornwall in England. The men were arrested on Tuesday, July 1, after Gardai from the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau stopped a van in the Courtmacsherry area of Cork, and 440kg of suspected cocaine, with a street value in excess of €31m, was recovered. Two of the men were arrested by the armed Maritime Interdiction Team, on a rigid inflatable boat (RIB) that had departed Broadstrand, Countmacherry. The boat was intercepted by two Naval Services RIBs dispatched from Irish naval ship L.E William Butler Years, supported by a Maritime patrol aircraft from the Irish Air Corps, off the coast of Waterford. Doherty, from Pollok, and Sandford, from Keith, both faced two charges regarding possession of cocaine and possession of cocaine for sale or supply. The four defendants were remanded in custody, and will appear at Macroom District Court on July 9. 'Guard of honour' for gangland duo at their funeral after drive-by killings

Scottish gangsters Eddie Lyons Junior and Ross Monaghan were gunned down in a nighttime assassination in Andalucia, Spain, and a man has been accused of their murder Gangland figures and their families have gathered for the funeral of slain Scottish thugs Eddie Lyons Junior and Ross Monaghan following their deaths in a nighttime drive-by assassination. The 46 and 43-year-old, who had links to Glasgow's criminal underworld, both died when a masked gunman opened fire at Monaghans Bar in Fuengirola, Andalucia, in late May. Local media reported at the time that their mystery assailant had pulled up outside the crowded bar at 11pm before shooting the pair and speeding away in the same vehicle. Their bodies were repatriated to the UK in June, and laid to rest in Glasgow's Bishopbriggs Crematorium this afternoon. The Daily Record reports that the service began at 3pm today as Lyons Jnr and Monaghan's bodies arrived in coffins being carried by silver funeral cars, where they were greeted with a huge crowd. Figures amongst the throng were spotted queuing to gain entry to the building dressed in black and glittering designer gear, with women seen crying and men standing together to form a "guard of honour" at the crematorium entrance. They had arrived in more than 100 cars, all of which were parked on the premises. The vast majority were large, dark SUVs with blacked out windows, while a selection of other vehicles could be seen parked on the road outside the crematorium. Mourners were guarded by two private security guards clad in yellow jackets, who moved around the perimeter of the car park as the service began. Lyuons Jnr and Monaghan were members of the Lyons crime clan, who have been involved in a long-running feud with the Daniel family, a rival clan with whom they have been warring for almost 25 years. Spanish investigators believe the shootings of the two men, which were carried out in front of horrified tourists having a post Champion's League tipple at the Spanish pub earlier this year, were linked to a rivalry with the Daniel family, The man accused of shooting, Michael Riley, 44, appeared at Wesminster Magistrates' Court in London via videolink from HMP Wandsworth in late June after Spanish police fingered him for the killings. He is yet to be charged, however, with a full extradition hearing expected to be held this year. Mr Riley, who was arrested by Merseyside Police under an international arrest warrant issued by the Spanish authorities, has also not been given the opportunity to respond to allegations made about him by Spanish National Police.

Five men whose shackled bodies washed up on holiday island died at sea after being forced to drink salt water and urine

It turns out the men had been shackled together in a death ritual of some kind HORROR JOURNEY Five men whose shackled bodies washed up on holiday island died at sea after being forced to drink salt water and urine Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) FIVE men found dead in the sea off Mallorca with their hands and feet bound starved after drinking their own urine and sea water, distraught relatives have revealed. As suspected, the bodies were those of African migrants who had tried to get to the Spanish holiday island to start a new life in Europe. There was shock and horror when the five corpses were discovered in the ocean off the Balearics - and it was initially thought they had been murdered while crossing and dumped into the sea. But their families have now revealed they were bound because of a death ritual after they died of starvation on the two week hazardous journey. And they confirmed that they were so hungry and thirsty that they had to resort to drinking their own urine and fatally, sea water. They also ate just one date a day. read more in world news TERROR REIGN Iran's fatwa demanding Trump be CRUCIFIED 'could spark terror attacks in West' Dramatic pictures and a shocking video have been published by Spanish newspaper Diario de Ibiza showing the migrants packed into the tiny boat on the choppy ocean. At one stage, their distress is evident as they wave orange sticks to try and attract passing boats. Their tiny boat had left Algeria and was adrift for two weeks as the engine had broke down during the second day of the crossing. After receiving the survivors, who were between 15 and 27 years old (there were several minors on board), the Red Cross found that most of them had very acute symptoms of dehydration, wounds and infectious symptoms. During their anxiety, they fed themselves with a date a day and most ended up drinking their own urine to survive, since they consumed all the milk and fresh water they had on them. "One of the people had eaten toothpaste because he did not have anything else and did not want to let go of the bottle when he arrived here," the Red Cross explained to the Alicante newspaper Información. Horror in Majorca as at least five bodies with hands and feet shackled are plucked from water off Brit holiday island All the migrants were Somalis, except for the two alleged skippers, who are Nigerian nationals. One of them died during the crossing and the other was arrested by the National Police. He is accused of crimes of organising illegal immigration, reckless homicide, injuries and membership of a criminal organisation. Doctors said those who chose to ingest seawater ended up dying. In addition, the information provided by the Red Cross to the authorities regarding the causes of death of the body that was in the boat also eliminates any theory of a violent death. "The fundamental cause of death is hypoglycemia. Ketoacidosis. Metabolic syndrome," says the communication. Hypoglycemia occurs when glucose levels, the body's main source of energy in the blood, fall below what is healthy for the body. On May 18, ten days after the boat was rescued near Alicante, a handcuffed body arrived on the coast of Formentera. Over the next few weeks, the trickle of corpses continued to total five. They were all wearing an orange vest and were tied hand-and-foot. The brother of one of the survivors of the crossing said that in Islamic tradition, it is customary in Somalia to wrap the body, tie their legs and bend their hands so that they hold each other. The migrants did not have the means to wrap the bodies but they were able to perform these ties, like funeral rites, before throwing the bodies overboard.
