Tetteh: International Follow-up Committee meeting is crucial step to support Libyans' aspirations

Libya Observer21-06-2025

The Special Representative of the UN Secretary General and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Hanna Tetteh, described the meeting of the International Follow-up Committee on the Berlin Process for Libya—held Friday in the German capital—as a crucial step to rally international support for the aspirations of the Libyan people.
Tetteh extended her 'sincere thanks to Germany for hosting this critical meeting' and expressed her gratitude to 'all members of the International Follow-up Committee on Libya for convening in Berlin for the first time since the last meeting in 2021,' according to a post on her X page.
She stated that the collective commitment to Libya's future is not only appreciated, but essential, adding: 'Our top priority remains clear: we must mobilize the international community to support a Libyan-led and Libyan-owned political process, facilitated by the United Nations.'
Tetteh emphasized that the Libyan people's demands for unified and legitimate institutions, as well as peace, stability, and prosperity, are unambiguous. She considered the committee's meeting a decisive step in rallying the international support needed to realize these fundamental aspirations.
Meanwhile, the members of the International Follow-up Committee on the Berlin Process expressed regret over the halt in earlier progress toward a political resolution to the Libyan crisis. They warned that this stagnation poses increasing risks to Libya's unity and stability due to the crisis of institutional legitimacy, fragmented governance structures, and the rapidly deteriorating economic and financial situation.
The committee convened on Friday in Berlin at the senior official level, co-chaired by the UN Special Representative and Head of UNSMIL, and the German Special Envoy to Libya, Ambassador Christian Buck, to 'support the implementation of a Libyan-led and Libyan-owned political process facilitated by the United Nations that leads to a political solution to the Libyan crisis,' according to a statement published by UNSMIL on its media platforms. EU commissioner announces upcoming visit to Libya to discuss migration

EU Commissioner for Migration Magnus Brunner announced plans to visit Libya 'next week or the week after,' accompanied by officials from Greece, Italy, and Malta, to participate in talks on migration. Brunner acknowledged criticism over cooperation with 'questionable actors' in Libya but insisted that engagement with the Libyan authorities is necessary, describing a 'tragic situation' in which people are pushed onto migrant boats by official Libyan forces. While admitting the existence of violations, the commissioner reaffirmed the EU's commitment to the 'do no harm' principle. He emphasized continued training of Libya's coast guard on human rights and the need for sustained financial and operational support, particularly for search and rescue operations. He added that EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen supported this approach, highlighting the importance of enhanced cooperation with Libya. Brunner's trip is expected to include visits to both eastern and western Libya, focusing on improving border control and combating migrant smuggling. Tags: European Union illegal immigration

Hammad government accuses UN mission of 'deliberately distorting' people's demands

The eastern-based interim government led by Osama Hamad responded to a UN mission statement on recent protests in Libya, accusing it of deliberately misrepresenting popular demands, making irresponsible accusations, and manipulating international opinion in a way that does not reflect the reality on the ground. The government said the protests were a natural expression of growing public anger over the UN mission's performance, which it claimed had failed to achieve tangible progress for over a decade and, intentionally or not, contributed to the complexity of Libya's crisis. In its statement, Hammad's government rejected what it called the mission's portrayal of the protests as a conspiracy or incitement to violence, stressing this depiction misrepresents the truth. It added that the UN mission's transgressions have become clear, especially in relation to state security, sovereignty, and direct interference in internal affairs. The government called on the mission to respect its mandate and refrain from overstepping its role. This response followed a UN statement expressing concern over alleged incitement by political figures encouraging protesters to engage in unlawful acts against the mission. The UN reaffirmed its full respect for the right to peaceful protest and its willingness to engage in a Libyan-led political process. The Hammad government urged the mission to maintain neutrality and professionalism and avoid undermining the legitimate demands of the Libyan people, while the UN continues monitoring developments closely.
