Top of the Pops presenter who was as famous as Zoe Ball on 'what went wrong'
Sarah Cawood was one of the biggest TV hosts of the '90s and a key presenter on Top of The Pops. But her life has changed dramatically two decades after her big break.
Sarah's first major role was in children's television for Nickelodeon in the '90s, and just two years later she secured a presenting job on Channel 4's The Girlie Show alongside Sara Cox. The programme ran for two series and followed a magazine format, featuring interviews, live music and stunts.
The show aired at the late 'post-pub' slot of 11pm on Fridays, aiming to be edgier than its competitors and capitalising on the 'ladette' culture that defined the decade. She then joined the revamped Live and Kicking programme for its final two years on air.
Her most significant role came when she landed a spot on Top of The Pops. After her stint ended, she went on to present various mini-series and one-offs, including co-commentating the Eurovision semi-finals in 2007, 2009 and 2010.
However, around this time, many of the big presenting opportunities began to dwindle, with Sarah joining Heart East Anglia's breakfast show team for a year in 2014 before leaving to focus on caring for her children, reports the Daily Record.
In 2022 Sarah was diagnosed with breast cancer - but thankfully she was treated and given the all-clear. Earlier this year, the star opened up about her health struggles on social media, expressing fears about her breast cancer returning.
"This is the reality of anyone who has had any kind of cancer," she said. "I never struggled with health anxiety before but post-breast cancer it's all-consuming and it wears me out a bit tbh.
"I have been feeling tired since the new year began and although it's probably just life-ing, there's always a niggling worry that it's back.
"All I can do is carry on doing healthy things, moving my body, practising mindfulness and living each day with gratitude that I got to breathe again this morning.
"So on we go! Batting away those intrusive thoughts and getting on with it. To anyone either going through a cancer diagnosis or anyone who has recovered from cancer and feels like this: I've got you, and my inbox is always open.
"And remember, anything that doesn't feel right: get it checked out. Early detection is key."
Reflecting on her television career in another heartfelt Instagram message, she shared insights into her acceptance of being 'unsuccessful' on TV, adding: "Do I miss telly? I miss the money! And yes, sometimes I wonder what went wrong, but I'm here now so I'm going to make the most of it, however, that looks".

Channel 4 viewers 'sick to their stomachs' over One Day in Southport documentary
Viewers have been left angry and horrified after tuning into Channel 4's new documentary which explores the mass stabbing at a Taylor Swift-themed dance workshop in Southport that triggered an explosion of mob violence Channel 4 's powerful new documentary One Day in Southport, which examines the harrowing events of 29 July 2024 and the horror that followed, had a deep impact on viewers tonight. The film focuses on one young survivor and her family, shedding light on how tragedy, misinformation, and extremism collided in modern Britain. Featuring interviews with witnesses, relatives, and community members, the documentary paints a stark picture of the horrifying event. The programme centres on the deadly stabbing attack carried out by 17-year-old Axel Rudakubana during a Taylor Swift-themed dance class at the Hart Space community centre in Southport. Three young girls, Bebe King (6), Elsie Dot Stancombe (7), and Alice da Silva Aguiar (9), were all killed in the brutal stabbings. Ten more people, including eight children, were also injured. Rudakubana, who was arrested at the scene, later pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 52 years. In the aftermath, false rumours circulated online accusing a Muslim asylum seeker of the crime. The misinformation sparked riots in 27 towns, leading to violent attacks on mosques and migrant homes. One Day in Southport which explores not only the personal grief but also the wider social consequences had an instant impact on viewers who tuned into the Channel 4 documentary tonight. Taking to X after watching the chilling stories of the victims unfold, viewers shared their heartbreak. "I am truly sick to my stomach watching this. How did this happen to such innocent little babies? Bawling my eyes out and thinking of their poor families," one viewer shared. Another echoed: "God, this is such a hard watch, but so important too." Another Channel 4 viewer typed: "Those poor little girls must have been terrified. To think they had their whole lives ahead of them. Such a powerful documentary. Fair play to Channel 4." "So heartbroken watching this. Tears streaming down to the ground omg," someone else shared. While another viewer voiced: "It just shows how unsafe the UK has become. Nobody is safe. Not even innocent little girls." The documentary also focused on the riots that took place in Middlesbrough on August 4, 2024. It had initially been scheduled to be a peaceful protest in light of the fatal Southport stabbings, which turned into riots, which were fuelled by anti-Islamophobic and racist misinformation around the killer's identity. Over 1,000 people attended the riot, which saw some smash shop windows, attack homes, and burn cars. Wesley Winter, who contributes to the documentary, shared his experience with The Mirror ahead of the release of One Day in Southport. "We saw a car get burnt down. For me, the most shocking thing was that there was a car trying to get through and people were saying, 'If you're not white, you can't go through,'" says Wesley, who is half Korean. "That was really tinteresting o see because Middlesbrough was quite a diverse area. "It did seem like it was an excuse for just anyone to break houses and smash windows and target anyone and everyone. It was unfair." For Wesley's wife, Cailin - a Chinese national - the experience proved to be traumatic. While waiting in their car for Wesley to film, she was surrounded by masked rioters who began attacking the vehicle. "They were like monkeys, yelling, shouting, and jumping around, jumping on the car one by one," she says. "They kicked the windows, smashed the windows, and celebrated. I realised that they didn't fear anything." The incident has deeply affected Cailin. "It was really traumatic because she's not familiar with England that much. Now when she goes to the high street, if people are riding on bikes with masks on, it's traumatic for her," he says. The police arrested 43 people in connection with the violence in Middlesbrough. Wesley thinks that the government could have stepped in sooner to stop the damage from happening. "There was a lot of damage control that could have been done from the government. There was a lack of information at the time around who the attacker was," he says. "There was so much speculation about who he was and I know there are laws around it but for this particular case, I think there should have been more information to reduce the risk. "People wanted to funnel their anger somewhere and they just chose the streets. It was really unfortunate." One Day in Southport is available to stream on Channel 4.

Conservative host Robby Soave splits with longtime wife to get engaged to gay lover
A popular political pundit has become the talk of D.C.'s social scene after splitting with his wife of almost ten years to get engaged to his younger gay lover. Robby Soave, who turns 37 next month, is best known as the co-host of The Hill's morning show Rising, as well as for his regular appearances on Fox News and his role as a senior editor at the libertarian magazine Reason. Earlier this week, Soave shocked his followers when he abruptly announced his engagement to male med student Jie Jung Shih. Soave popped the question with a Tiffany and Co. ring over candles and champagne in Taormina, Sicily, while the pair were on a romantic getaway together. Announcing the news on X, formerly Twitter, he wrote, 'Some personal news from my Sicily trip earlier this month, in case anyone missed it: I got engaged!' There was no mention of Soave's longtime wife Caroline 'Carrie' Soave, who he celebrated his ninth anniversary with in Positano, Italy, back in October, 2023. Robby and Carrie were high school sweethearts who went on their first date back in 2004. The Rising host often posted photos with Carrie on Instagram, and was never shy when it came to gushing about their marriage. In a 2019 post, he wrote, 'Today, five years ago, @carriesoave and I got married, following just over 10 years of dating that began when we were in high school and continued through college and after. 'Despite having to spend years and years and years apart from each other, we always knew where we wanted to end up: Together. I love you so much babe!' While celebrating their wedding anniversary in 2023, Soave gushed, 'Could not be more overjoyed to celebrate nine years married to @carriesoave! 'The most wonderful woman on earth, and the love of my life. Of course it's actually been a lot longer… we fell in love as high schoolers in the early 00s. There's no one else I'd rather travel the world with. Italy is almost as beautiful as you!' The former couple were often seen out at events in Washington, D.C., and would dress up together on Halloween. It's unclear when exactly they split, but Robby hasn't posted anything with Carrie since their ninth wedding anniversary in late 2023. Last fall, Carrie officially left D.C. to return home to Michigan to be with her family and to open a consulting business. Discussing her move with the Grosse Pointe News in March, Carrie said, 'My family is here and I'd been wanting to come back.' hears that the Soaves' split has been the talk of the town in D.C.'s social circles all week. While some are happy to see Robby out of the closet, the overwhelming sympathy is with Carrie, who was with Robby for 17 years before fleeing D.C. for a 'fresh start' in Michigan after their divorce was finalized last year. Other have said that Robby's sexuality has been part of the D.C. gossip mill for years, so few people were surprised to see him end up with a man. As for Carrie, she hasn't publicly offered any details about her personal life and appears to be going to great lengths to fly under the radar and move on from her failed marriage. Soave hasn't shared much about his relationship to fiance Shih either, but he did tell Politico that they met at a bar on U Street in D.C. and that it was 'love at first sight.' has contacted Robby and Carrie for comment. Since publicly sharing his engagement, Soave has been inundated with cruel and often homophobic comments from his followers as well as countless right wing figures. 'The amount of extremely homophobic comments this is getting is truly astounding and disgusting,' wrote one follower. 'Why can't people just be happy for other people's happiness? The haters had no call to spew their irrational hatred like that. Very disappointed. Idiots never stop to amaze.' Despite the backlash, Soave has received support from a number of other prominent political pundits, including former Rising co-hosts Kim Iversen and Ryan Grim. 'Congratulations Robby! Wishing you both many great years ahead!' Iversen gushed. Soave is a decorated journalist who made it onto Forbes' 30 under 30 list in 2016. He's published two books, is a regular on Fox News and is currently the longest-serving co-host on Rising, which is one of YouTube's biggest political talk shows. His partner Jie Jung Shih is a student at the Georgetown University School of Medicine. Shih is active in the LGBTQ+ community, and was one of a group of med students who volunteered at Capital Pride Festival in Washington last year.
