Malaysia, Egypt Agree On USIM As Gateway For Al-Azhar Medical Studies
JASIN, May 25 (Bernama) -- The governments of Egypt and Malaysia have agreed to designate Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) as a one-stop centre for students sponsored by Al-Azhar University to pursue medical studies at the prestigious institution.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that the selected students would undergo a one-year 'familiarisation course' at USIM before departing to continue their studies at Al-Azhar University.
'As part of the process of sending students to Egypt, we will conduct a one-year Arabic-language familiarisation course at USIM, as agreed by both the Egyptian and Malaysian governments,' he said.
He was speaking to reporters after attending the launch of the Dunia Melayu Dunia Islam (DMDI) Dakwah Complex and the DMDI Foundation Tahfiz Centre at Maahad Tahfiz Sulaimaniyyah, Kampung Tersusun DMDI Bukit Senggeh, Selandar, here today.
The ceremony, officiated by the Yang Dipertua Negeri of Melaka, Tun Mohd Ali Rustam, was also attended by Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh and DMDI Foundation chairman Datuk Mohd Ridhwan Mohd Ali.
The DMDI Foundation Tahfiz Centre began construction in 2021 and was completed in February this year, with 37 students enrolled in its first intake.
Ahmad Zahid said the government also prioritised outstanding tahfiz school graduates, especially those with a Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM) Level 5, to pursue medical studies at Al-Azhar University.
Commenting on Parti Keadilan Rakyat's (PKR) request to contest 13 seats in the upcoming Sabah state election, Ahmad Zahid, who is also UMNO president, said discussions were still ongoing between Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH).
'To me, the request is an internal matter among PH component parties, and we fully respect the cooperation between BN and PH as well as the negotiations with local parties in Sabah.

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for an increase in intra-BRICS trade and for the grouping to emerge as a strong and principled force, grounded in equity, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to shaping a more balanced and just international order. Lamenting unilateral tariff measures and protectionist policies, Anwar expressed confidence that BRICS, which today accounts for nearly 40 per cent of the global economy, holds vast potential to boost trade within the informal grouping. "With that collective strength, we can engage the world safely, fairly, and justly, negotiating on equal terms with all partners in the multilateral system," he said. He further emphasised the need for reform of key international institutions. "We must demand the transformation of global governance structures, from the United Nations to the World Trade Organisation, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank towards a more democratic and just multilateral order," he said at the BRICS Business Forum entitled: 'Bridging Continents, Building Future: A Shared Agenda for Sustainable Progress' in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil today. Also present were President of Brazil Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Vice President of Brazil Geraldo Alckmin and President of the Brazilian Confederation of National Industry (CNI) Ricardo Alban. Anwar firmly asserted that developing countries should no longer be regarded as peripheral players in the global system. "We are not merely heirs of post-colonial history. We have now risen as a dignified force with our strengths in technology, trade, leadership, and the moral voice of the world," he said. "BRICS today goes beyond political rhetoric. It is a coalition of political, economic, and civil society forces moving in tandem to demand a more just and equitable global system." The uniqueness of BRICS is highlighted by the active participation of the private sector, women, youth, and civil society, making this struggle not merely an elite discourse but an inclusive and resilient collective movement, said Anwar, who is also the finance minister. As the Chair of ASEAN, Malaysia shares this aspiration, he added. The Malaysian prime minister said BRICS and ASEAN members must continue to strengthen strategic cooperation, including enhancing cross-regional trade and investment for the shared benefit of developing countries. BRICS 2025 is not merely a continuation of past efforts but a moment of renewed awakening. With visionary political leadership, a progressive private sector, and a strengthening Global South solidarity, "we have a real opportunity to reshape the global landscape," he added. Anwar also voiced his support for Lula, commending him as one of the few courageous global leaders today to speak on behalf of those who have been left unheard. The BRICS group - which serves as a political and diplomatic coordination forum for countries of the Global South with collaboration across diverse sectors - was initially established by Brazil, Russia, India and China. It later expanded with the inclusion of South Africa in 2011, followed by Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in 2023, and Indonesia in 2024. Malaysia, as well as Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Nigeria, Thailand, Vietnam, Uganda, and Uzbekistan, were accepted as BRICS partner countries. Anwar arrived earlier today to attend the 17th BRICS Leaders' Summit hosted by Brazil at the invitation of Lula. PM to push trade ties at BRICS Summit in Brazil
PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will have a packed programme in Brazil with the highlight being his participation in the 17th BRICS Summit. Malaysia's acting head of mission in Brazil Datuk Mohammad Ali Selamat said the Prime Minister will arrive in the Brazilian capital of Rio de Janeiro today at the invitation of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. He said Anwar will participate in the Presidential Panel session during the BRICS Business Forum. 'The event will be attended by Brazil's president and is expected to include leaders of BRICS member countries,' he said in a virtual interview with selected Malaysian media from the Brazilian capital. The BRICS Business Forum will bring together over 1,000 business leaders, government officials, international organisations and experts from the countries concerned along with other invited nations, to foster economic and international trade cooperation, besides sustainable development. Held annually on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit, the forum aims to offer private sector perspectives to BRICS leaders on tackling shared challenges and advancing common business priorities. Mohamad Ali said the Prime Minister, who is making his second visit to Brazil, is also scheduled to hold meetings with corporate leaders from Brazil and Malaysia on business and investment opportunities. He will then attend the 17th BRICS Leaders Summit at the Museum of Modern Art, and deliver Malaysia's national statement during the session on Strengthening Multilateralism, Economic-Financial Affairs and Artificial Intelligence. Ahmad Zahid offers condolences to Hamzah Zainudin on father-in-law's passing
KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today extended his condolences to Perikatan Nasional (PN) deputy chairman Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin following the passing of his father-in-law, Datuk Abdul Ghani Ngah, at 1.45 pm today. Ahmad Zahid, in a Facebook post, also prayed for the family to be granted strength and perseverance during this difficult time. 'This is indeed a very challenging test for the family and a great loss to all who knew him,' he said. 'Let us all recite Al-Fatihah for the late Datuk Abdul Ghani Ngah, who was also the father-in-law of Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, and pray that his soul is blessed, forgiven of all sins, and placed among the righteous,' he said. It is understood that Abdul Ghani, 83, had been receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital following complications and breathing difficulties after his house caught fire on June 19. The funeral prayers will be held at the Kampung Melayu Sungai Rapat Mosque, and he will be laid to rest at the Kampung Rapat Jaya Muslim Cemetery in Ipoh, Perak. In the fire incident at their two-storey house, Abdul Ghani's wife, Datin Salmiah Nyak Matt, 84, was found unconscious on the lower floor by rescue teams and later pronounced dead. - Bernama
