Sabah to revive rice production in food security push, says CM
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor announced the initiative at the state-level Kaamatan celebration, saying the festival serves as a timely reminder of the importance of agriculture.
'As we celebrate Kaamatan, we must also reflect on the significance of agriculture in our lives — especially padi farming, which has long been a symbol of our people's resilience,' he said in his speech during the launching ceremony of Pesta Kaamatan 2025 at the Hongkod Koisaan hall, on Friday (May 30).
Hajiji said the state government is committed to strengthening Sabah's food supply chain by revitalising initiatives to increase local rice output and reduce reliance on imported food.
These include the reactivation of the Sabah Paddy and Rice Board to improve the state's self-sufficiency level (SSL), with the aim of achieving 30% rice SSL by next year and 60% by 2030.
'These efforts are not just about economic sustainability — they are also about preserving our culture and heritage that revolve around rice and farming traditions,' he said.
He added that the government is also focusing on improving the rural economy through modern agriculture, community-based tourism, and support for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), under the Sabah Maju Jaya development blueprint.
Hajiji stressed that strong cooperation with the Federal Government would be crucial in ensuring that the state's development policies translate into tangible benefits for the people.
'I am confident that our close relationship with the federal government will help accelerate the success of our state development agenda,' he said.
Beyond agriculture, Hajiji also emphasised that Kaamatan serves as a unifying force for Sabah's multicultural society, bringing people together in the spirit of harmony, respect, and mutual appreciation.
'This festival is a reflection of our unity in diversity — Kaamatan belongs to everyone, and through it, we celebrate not only the harvest but also the values of togetherness that bind us as Sabahans,' he said.
He also noted that this year's Kaamatan marks the 65th celebration since its official introduction in 1960, with the theme 'Kaamatan Untuk Semua, Kaamatan For All, Kaamatan Montok Toinsanan'.
The Chief Minister thanked Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for gracing the celebration, calling his presence 'a meaningful gesture of support for Sabah's culture, people and aspirations.'
Kaamatan, also known as the Harvest Festival, is an annual cultural event celebrated by the Kadazan Dusun and Murut communities and has grown to reflect the state's broader multicultural identity.

Sabah assemblymen attend court hearing on state's 40pct revenue entitlement
KOTA KINABALU: Despite the ongoing Sabah State Assembly sitting today, several assemblymen took time to attend the hearing of the Sabah Law Society's (SLS) judicial review on the state's 40 per cent revenue entitlement. Among those present were former Chief Ministers Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal and Datuk Yong Teck Lee, Tungku assemblyman Assaffal P. Alian, and Sri Tanjong assemblyman Justin Wong. Also seen at the court were former Penampang member of parliament (MP) Datuk Darell Leiking and former Kota Kinabalu MP Datuk Jimmy Wong Sze Phin. The hearing commenced at 9.40am before High Court Judge Celestina Stuel Galid. The SLS filed for a judicial review in 2022, alleging that the Federal Government had breached the Federal Constitution by failing to conduct a mandatory revenue review every five years since 1974. The society also argued that the government is constitutionally obliged to remit 40 per cent of federal revenue collected from Sabah back to the state for each of those years. On Nov 11, 2022, the Kota Kinabalu High Court granted leave for the SLS to proceed with its judicial review. The Attorney General filed an appeal against the decision and obtained a stay of proceedings at the High Court. However, on June 18 last year, the Court of Appeal dismissed the Federal Government's appeal against the leave granted to SLS. The full hearing of the judicial review was set for today.

Sabah never a priority for peninsula-based coalitions: Pairin

PAPAR: The Sabah Government must be led by local-based parties to ensure true progress for the State and people, rather than political coalitions dominated by Peninsular Malaysian parties. Former Chief Minister and Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) Premier Advisor Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan said it is crucial for local leadership to govern Sabah so as to safeguard the state's interests and drive development tailored to State's unique needs. Advertisement 'It's very simple. If the dominant party (governing the State Government) comes from Semenanjung (Peninsular Malaysia), they are not really thinking about our development here. 'They have always been focusing more on their wilayah (regions). To be fair, this is Malaysia,' he said, after opening PBS Limbahau's 40th Annual General Meeting at the multipurpose hall of Mositun Kg Sungkadon-Novoung, Sunday. Also present were PBS Limbahau divisional head Datuk Johnny Mositun, PBS senior leaders Datuk Seri Radin Malleh and Datuk Edward Yong, former Buang Sayang assemblyman Datuk Claudius Sundang Alex, and divisional heads. Barisan Nasional (BN) — led by Umno in Sabah — governed the state for about 24 years continuously from 1994 to 2018 until defeated by Warisan in the 2018 general election. Pairin, who is also Huguan Siou or paramount leader of the Kadazandusun Murut (KDM) community, was asked to explain his call to the delegates here on the importance of making sure local parties become the backbone of the State government. Based on his political knowledge and experience as well as holding various ministerial portfolios during the then governance by BN in Sabah for almost three decades, he said key issues under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) remain unresolved even after more than six decades since the formation of Malaysia. 'It's (claiming for Sabah rights and interests under MA63) still on the negotiating table. That cannot be — we're supposed to be over 60 years already, and yet we are still suffering,' he said. Pairin urged Sabahans to ensure local parties get the mandate to form the State Government. 'That must be the focus because the thinking and heart of local parties of Sabahan leaders lies sympathetically with the state and its people,' he said. Asked whether his stance aligned with the slogan 'Sabah for Sabahans,' Pairin replied, 'Yes, that is the reminder.' Earlier, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) Deputy-Secretary General Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali expressed the same sentiment. To a question, Pairin said PBS is ready to defend the Limbahau State seat in the coming State poll; besides other constituencies. He said PBS has long championed Limbahau and that it was only fitting for the party to contest the seat again. 'Our PBS Limbahau divisional head (Datuk Johnny Mositun) has been fighting for such a long time, non-stop. I think it should be considered. This is not over yet; it's still ongoing. 'As for other constituencies, everyone has their own opinion. We will deliver it to the party leadership to be discussed and considered,' he said. Pairin also called on Sabah youths who have turned 18 and automatically become voters to cast their votes as they are leaders who will inherit and shape Sabah's future and the nation. 'It is very important for leaders in political parties to ensure that the younger generation realize that they have the responsibility. 'The responsibility is to realise that this is their country, this is their state, this is their home, and this is where they expect to work and have families – where their future lies. Meanwhile, PBS Acting President Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam said co-operation with peninsula-based parties is important, but priority must be given to political stability and leadership at the state level. He added that such collaboration should only exist when local parties (GRS) are at the helm of Sabah. 'Sabah is our homeland. We understand it better and are in a stronger position to resolve issues in a more inclusive and comprehensive manner,' he stressed. He also reminded PBS members that they are the backbone of the party and urged the entire party machinery to rise and champion PBS's aspirations throughout the state. Johor seeks idle federal land for affordable housing

State housing and local government committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor said an application highlighting Johor government's intended use for the plot was sent to Putrajaya earlier this year. 'About 2,000 affordable houses could be built on the land. 'We are only seeking a portion of the overall plot that belongs to the Health Ministry. 'It has been sitting in a prime location without development for more than a decade,' he told reporters at Dewanraya Bukit Indah public hall in Bukit Indah 2, Iskandar Puteri. 'If permission is granted, the state will find its own budget and collaborate with the relevant housing funds and developers for as long as it takes to build as many affordable houses as possible,' he added. Mohd Jafni had earlier accompanied Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi who handed out Johor Affordable Housing (RMMJ) scheme certificates to home owners. He said the state was also looking to upgrade unused or unoccupied federal agencies' quarters to turn into affordable housing for civil servants. 'There is a four-storey block of quarters in Kulai that suits this criteria. 'However, if Putrajaya does not have the budget to repair the building, the state government is willing to fork out the funds and then offer the units to the rakyat as part of the RMMJ scheme. 'With Johor undergoing rapid development and new hospitals opening soon, there are surely many civil servants like doctors and nurses who would want to own a house,' he said. The state government earmarked RM200mil for RMMJ units in the Kempas plot as well as the upgrading of underutilised government quarters in Kulai, he added. 'Johor has taken its own initiative to develop more RMMJ units for the people and hopes for Putrajaya's support in the matter,' said Mohd Jafni. Earlier during the event, Onn Hafiz said out-of-the-box solutions were needed to ensure home ownership. The repurposing of unused federal land for the development of affordable houses was one such answer, he pointed out. He said there was pressing need for RMMJ units as the state government received more than 85,000 applications so far. 'We are not just handing out empty promises as we have already completed 10 main RMMJ projects in various districts. 'We expect to see the completion of more RMMJ developments in Iskandar Puteri, Tebrau, Kulai, Pontian, Batu Pahat, Kluang and Segamat this year and next year,' he said. Onn Hafiz added that millions of ringgit have been spent to repair and upgrade dilapidated homes statewide. He promised that the state would deliver 100,000 RMMJ units by 2030.
