Markowski double-double leads Nebraska women to 84-60 win over Rutgers in Big Ten tourney
The Cornhuskers (20-10) face seventh-seeded Illinois, a team they lost to by nine, in the second round on Thursday.
Amiah Hargrove had 13 points and Alberte Rimdahl 12 off the bench for Nebraska, which won 69-62 at Rutgers in their only other meeting this season. Britt Prince added 10 points and five assists. Markowski upped her school record for double-doubles to 51.
Destiny Adams was 13 of 13 from the foul line and led the Scarlet Knights (11-19) with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Awa Sidibe and Mya Petticord both added 11. Rutgers had five 3s and shot 36% after an 8 of 14 fourth quarter when it scored 23 points.
Nebraska shot 55%, including 13 of 31 from 3-point range by eight different players. All four double-figure scorers had two 3s as did Logan Nissley.
Markowski had 14 points in the first half, including five in a late 11-0 surge in the first quarter that helped the Cornhuskers take a 22-13 lead. Markowski, Prince and Hargrove each had a 3 in the run and Nebraska, which averages eight a game, had eight triples at halftime.
Rimdal and Markowski both had their second 3s in the second quarter as the lead stretched to 39-24.
Nebraska got a couple of early 3s in the second half and closed the third quarter with eight-straight points for a 61-37 lead.

Claude Mpouma, who will play first football game for Mount Carmel in the fall, commits to Nebraska. ‘I'm excited.'
When Mount Carmel's Claude Mpouma moved to the United States from Cameroon shortly before starting high school, he was excited to see how far he could go in basketball, a sport he had played back home. But football? As far as Mpouma was concerned, that involved kicking a ball into a net. He had played plenty of soccer growing up. When he decided to give American football a shot, however, he was completely unfamiliar with all of the basics. 'I didn't even know how to put my jersey on,' Mpouma said. 'I knew nothing about it at all. I had to learn everything.' That was just last summer. Mpouma's first season playing football came as a junior at Phillips, which he attended before transferring in January to Mount Carmel. Less than a year later, Mpouma — rated by Rivals as a four-star offensive lineman recruit — committed to Nebraska. He announced his decision Monday in front of friends and family at Mettle Fitness in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood. 'I don't even know what to say about it,' Mpouma said. 'I woke up and I was like, 'Wow, this is crazy.' I thought I was just going to be a regular football player. 'I wasn't ready for anything like this. I never imagined this would happen.' Mpouma, who had over 30 Division I scholarship offers, narrowed his choices down to a final five that also included Ohio State, Michigan, Auburn and Florida before choosing the Cornhuskers. 'I feel good about Nebraska,' Mpouma said. 'I feel like I'm home every time I go there. It's a nice environment. I love the coaches. They're great. In the end, it was like, 'Why not Nebraska?'' Mpouma's size — he's 6-foot-8 and 305 pounds — certainly attracted him to major college recruiters intrigued by a raw athlete who's still learning the sport but showed an ability to adapt quickly last fall. Mpouma also believes he's just scratching the surface of his potential. 'I've got a lot of room to grow and a lot to learn still,' Mpouma said. 'I'm excited to keep getting better. I think going to a great program like Nebraska and playing in the Big Ten is going to help make me a better football player.' Phil Segroves, Mount Carmel's athletic director and boys basketball coach, has witnessed Mpouma's titanic rise in football while getting the chance to coach him on the basketball court. Mpouma, who is set to make his Mount Carmel football debut this fall, was able to contribute to the Caravan's sectional title run in basketball, playing over the final six weeks of the season. 'When he first got to Mount Carmel, he had to wait about a month before he was eligible to play,' Segroves said. 'He cheered for his teammates louder than anybody on the bench. He was a great teammate. 'We couldn't be prouder of him or happier for him. He has a certain sense of calmness about him that I think will help him a lot at the next level. He doesn't get too high or too low.' Mpouma has long had a passion for basketball, but when last summer rolled around, he was no longer sure he had a future in that sport. He became intrigued with football. 'I don't want to say I was going nowhere with basketball, but I felt like I had nothing to lose anymore, so I started playing football,' he said. Now, Mpouma has carved out a new path on the football field. Best of all, he's having a blast. 'With football, I feel like I can be myself and not get in trouble for it,' he said. 'I can push people around, grab people and throw them on the ground and not get in trouble. 'That's just fun. I'm happy about that.'

Ace Bailey: No. 5 overall pick signs rookie scale contract with Jazz
Former Rutgers forward Ace Bailey, the No. 5 pick in the NBA draft, signed his rookie-scale contract with the Utah Jazz on Wednesday, the team announced. Bailey was a third-team All-Big Ten selection last season at Rutgers, averaging 17.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 1.3 blocks and one steal on 34.6% shooting from 3-point range. He ranked ninth among all freshmen in points (527) and 10th in rebounds (215). He will make $9,069,840 next season, according to Spotrac. The 6-foot-8 standout was a highly-touted prospect entering the draft because of his size, scoring and instincts on both ends of the court. He has an incredible feel for the game and can score from each level, having registered three 30-point performances with the Scarlet Knights. Bailey arrived in Salt Lake City over the weekend and was introduced on Sunday, along with Walter Clayton Jr. (18th pick) and John Tonje (53rd pick). The group dined with the front office, and Bailey even hit the gym upon arriving at the practice facility. The signing comes after the 19-year-old orchestrated a rumor-filled predraft process that left doubt about his willingness to join the Jazz organization. He denied ever considering not reporting to the team and stated he is eager to get to work with the team. Bailey is expected to suit up with the Jazz in the Salt Lake City Summer League, beginning on Saturday against the Philadelphia 76ers (9 p.m. EDT, ESPN).
