Liverpool decide on Harvey Elliott price tag as next club preference emerges

Daily Mirror18 hours ago
Liverpool could demand £50million for Harvey Elliott this summer, as he continues to ponder his future at Anfield. Elliott, 22, is fresh from being named player of the tournament at the under-21 European Championship.
The midfielder scored five goals in six games to help England win the competition, netting in the final against Germany. Elliott's focus will now be on his future at club level, with links of a move away intensifying.
But the 22-year-old has set out a condition for his next club - and he won't come cheap. The Athletic report that Elliott's preference is to join a Champions League side, as he wants to play regularly at the top level.
And any suitors will have to cough up a sizeable sum. It's said that the Reds will demand a fee in excess of £40m while including a buy-back clause, or above £50m without one.
Tottenham, Brentford and RB Leipzig were both linked while Elliott impressed for the Young Lions in Slovakia. A broken foot saw him miss the autumn period for Liverpool last season, with Arne Slot only handing him a total of five starts - just two in the Premier League - across the 2024-25 campaign.
That's prompted Elliott to weigh up his future on Merseyside, not wanting to 'waste' years of his career. "I think it's a situation that me and the team on my behalf have to have a conversation about," the former Fulham wonderkid said ahead of the Euros.
"I'm coming into an age now where I'm 22 - I'm gonna be 23 next season - and I don't really want to be wasting years in my career because it's a short career, you don't know what's gonna happen.
"Injuries and things could shorten it. So I think it's a situation that, as I've said before, I need to reflect, I need to see if I'm content in doing what I'm doing and how can I improve as a player.
"That's the most important thing, that's the main thing really, I just want to improve and be the best possible version of myself and the best player I can be. And if that's to go somewhere else then it's a decision that I'm going to have to make, I just need to see what happens."
Which club should sign Harvey Elliott? Let us know your pick in the comments section.
In May, Slot admitted that he had to be 'honest' with Elliott about his lack of game-time. "I think first of all it's very important that players who are here with us would like to stay, that's a bit compliment to everyone working here," the Liverpool manager explained.
"Harvey is one of the players who hasn't had as much playing time as he maybe deserves, but like some others he's in competition with so many good players that mainly I've chosen. Also partly because he was injured for a long time and I've been honest with him, the first part after he came back from his injury he wasn't the same as he was before his injury.
"But the last few months he's back to his old level again. There was no need for me to start with different players, but I think if you look at the amount of minutes that he had in the last one or two months and the time before, you can see it goes up already. So that tells you that we like, I like, him more now than I did the first months when he came back from his injury."

Leah Williamson sends England greatness message aftter Arsenal triumph

Five members of England's Euro 2025 squad played for Arsenal in their Women's Champions League final win, including Lionesses captain and centre-back Leah Williamson Leah Williamson hopes she and her Arsenal team-mates in the England squad can use their Champions League success to set themselves up for Euro 2025 glory. Lionesses captain Williamson was one of five members of Sarina Wiegman's squad involved as Arsenal beat Barcelona in Lisbon in May to be crowned the best club side in Europe. Alessia Russo and on-loan Chloe Kelly both started the 1-0 victory, while Beth Mead and Lotte Wubben-Moy came off the bench. The quintet have all travelled to Switzerland, where the Euros holders kick off their title defence against France on July 5, and Williamson was asked how that club success might help spur on the national team. ‌ 'I think winning breeds a winning mentality - the consistency of it,' Williamson told UEFA. 'That's what they always say, 'To be great, you don't just win once, you win twice,' and so on and so forth. ‌ 'So it's a really good feeling to bank and just have that, and I do think it makes you a lot more hungry than you previously were. So I'm hoping that the experience isn't going to be of detriment to us at all, and another big moment, a big opportunity and we took it, so even proving to yourself, I think it does a lot for your own confidence.' England boss Wiegman has already won the tournament twice - once with the Lionesses in 2022 and once with her home country, the Netherlands, in 2017. She also led both nations to World Cup finals, with England losing to Spain in Australia in 2023, but insisted the hunger for more success is still there. 'Of course, we're defending our title, but as I said, we want to chase more,' Wiegman said. 'This is an opportunity, because if you see our group it's a very exciting, challenging group. 'From the beginning I feel like we play three finals straight away, so that's what we're going to chase for and show how good we are and that we can take our level to the next stage. That's what's necessary too, because the women's game in all areas is moving forward so quickly.' England will follow their opener against France with a game against the Netherlands on July 9, with the final group game taking place against Wales on July 13. 'We try to turn every stone to get as best prepared as we can be before we go into the tournament, and get every player fit and fresh to perform under the highest pressure, and then get ready for the next game,' Wiegman added. 'Your programme needs to be top, top level but you need a little bit of luck, too, at [times]. Trying to create momentum and getting that togetherness in the team, the excitement that we're ready to go. And I can feel it already!' Man Utd held private talks with rivals over intriguing Marcus Rashford swap move

Manchester United star Marcus Rashford was loaned to Aston Villa in the January transfer window and his move could've resulted in another player heading in the opposite direction Manchester United held talks with Aston Villa over a potential swap deal for Ollie Watkins as Marcus Rashford came to the end of his loan spell. Rashford, 27, spent the second half of last season at Villa Park, having fallen out on favour under Ruben Amorim. The loan deal included an option for Villa to sign the United forward for £40million but it could've been very different had the swap with Watkins came to fruition. The 29-year-old was reportedly available for transfer in January, even being offered to Arsenal. ‌ According to the Athletic, United held discussions with Villa about signing Watkins at the end of the season. The Red Devils have now made a fresh enquiry separate to Rashford, who Villa won't be signing permanently. ‌ Amorim wants to sign a new striker and Watkins has emerged a target, with Rashford having returned to Old Trafford but appearing to have no future at United. Villa, meanwhile, are currently grappling with Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules and it's claimed that they need to make one lucrative sale in order to avoid punishment. It's been speculated that Villa Park chiefs could follow Chelsea's example and sell their women's team in what would be a controversial move. Selling Watkins would also cause outcry, with Villa already letting one striker leave in the January transfer window before narrowly missing out on Champions League qualification. Unai Emery's side sanctioned the departure of Jhon Duran to Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr for a cool £65million. Duran's departure didn't mean that Watkins was always first-choice for Emery, though. Rashford started both of Villa's Champions League quarter-final clashes with Paris Saint-Germain, leaving Watkins 'fuming'. "I played 20 minutes against PSG in both games, so I'm not going to lie - I was fuming I wasn't playing," he told Sky Sports. "I let him (Emery) know that. He's the manager at the end of the day. I respect his decision. But I'm not one of the players happy to sit on the bench. Should Aston Villa have swapped Ollie Watkins for Marcus Rashford? Have your say in the comments section. ‌ "It's something I haven't experienced before, missing out on the biggest stage. You always want to play, especially in the Champions League. Me and a few others are disappointed we didn't start the game, but like I said, it's the manager's decision... Rather than let it hinder you, you have to use that anger as motivation." The England international would almost certainly start most games for the Red Devils, as he's significantly more Premier League-proven compared to United strikers Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee. Last season, Watkins bagged 17 goals and laid on 14 assists. Join our new MAN UTD WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Manchester United content from Mirror Football.
