Revenge Of The Savage Planet review - the best 3D Metroidvania returns

The sequel to Journey To The Savage Planet is bigger, better, and funnier than the original, as you get to explore multiple alien worlds with friends.
2020's Journey To The Savage Planet was the epitome of a cult hit – a game that was little known before its release, yet was great to play and chock full of personality. In the interim, its developer has been on something of a rollercoaster ride, as demonstrated by the fact it is now called Raccoon Logic rather than Typhoon Studios. But its return for a second bite of savage planetary action shows little sign of that upheaval.
Like its predecessor, Revenge Of The Savage Planet is a Metroidvania disguised as a third person action adventure. Structurally, visually and story-wise, it's very much a sequel, progressing logically from the first game and endowed with the same cheery, hyper-colourful palette and endearingly goofy vibe. But it also feels much more polished and honed and considerably meatier, thanks to a welter of side missions and hidden activities – addressing criticisms that the first game was too short.
If you're in the mood for a game whose story is utterly frivolous and tongue-in-cheek, with a leavening of gentle satire that pokes fun at the likes of boneheaded influencers and excessive consumption, you'll love Revenge of the Savage Planet. Once again, you're unceremoniously dispatched to an uninhabited planet, where you must establish a base in anticipation of colonisation. But this time around, your deadbeat employer, Kindred Aerospace, has been acquired by the rapacious Alta Interglobal.
When you reach your base, you find two messages from Alta, one welcoming you and the next informing you that you've been fired. Most of your gear is scattered around the planet you land on and four neighbouring ones. Each world has a distinctive set of ecosystems, including flora, fauna, and climate.
You must explore to find items that will add new abilities and upgrade your attributes, as you return to previously inaccessible areas when you acquire things like a whip, a grapple hook, an underwater scooter, and helmet-filter that allows you to breathe in poison gas-filled areas.
Everything in each environment can be scanned and the whip lets you capture alien creatures (some of which must first be stunned) Pokémon-style, which can then be researched by your habitat's computer, often yielding crucial upgrades.
There's some varied and inventive puzzling to be done – for example, unlocking crates by spraying metallic goo to create connections between electrified mushrooms. Plus, there's some pretty challenging platforming involved, along with some memorable and challenging boss battles. Tinkerers can 3D print all manner of furniture and appliances to decorate their bases, while the whole game is playable in two-player co-op, either in split screen or online.
One of Revenge Of The Savage Planet's many strengths lies in its tactility. Hostile creatures explode in showers of colourful goo, while others detonate after you've aimed a hefty kick at them. Different enemies require wildly different strategies and equipment; for example, green balls of slime filled with eyes can only be defeated by a good spraying with a water gun, which turns them progressively bluer until they melt.
Tiny spiky balls are impervious to your blaster but susceptible to your whip. Others have armour which must be whipped or ground-pounded before they will take damage. As you progress, you acquire tanks of differently coloured goo to fire, which must be deployed both against specific enemies and in the cause of puzzle-solving.
In lesser hands, Revenge Of The Savage Planet's welter of liquid-shooting guns and gadgets could have ended up as a disjointed mess, but Raccoon Logic has integrated them into a coherent and logical whole – it's definitely one of those games which is way cleverer than it looks.
Whether dealing with waves of varied enemies, solving puzzles which can often be arcane but always seem to make a weird form of sense, or returning with a new gadget to a previously explored area and uncovering something new, its maps are packed with activities that are all very satisfying. And while it's longer than Journey To The Savage Planet, you should still be able to finish it in 20 hours or so, so it isn't one of those games that is intimidatingly long. Its least impressive aspects don't seriously detract from the fun but we did have to undergo a period of grinding before taking down one of the later bosses and sometimes found our drone assistant both a tad annoying and not as helpful as they should have been. The parody adverts piped to your habitat's screen also grate after a while, but at least they can be switched off.
This is a well-constructed and cleverly designed game, that refuses to take itself at all seriously. It's genuinely funny, very distinctive in terms of both looks and atmosphere, and offers a pleasing amount of varied and satisfyingly gameplay. Metroidvanias may be a favourite of indie developers but there's still very few 3D examples of the concept, and Revenge Of The Savage Planet really makes you wonder why.
In Short: One of the best 3D Metroidvanias ever made, with the same endearing sense of humour as the original but several welcome improvements and a more substantial adventure.
Pros: Great gadgets and clever Metroidvania style puzzles and platforming. Genuinely funny at time, with some nicely distinctive visuals. Suite of two-player co-op options are very welcome.
Cons: Some forced level grinding and some of the wackier humour can grate after a while – especially the annoyingly unhelpful drone.

Bottomless brunches have been a popular way to spend a weekend since they were introduced to the UK about ten years ago. Similar to a Dubai-style brunch, where there's a near endless buffet lunch and countless drinks available, these decadent brunches have taken off in cities across the country. Having lived in Dubai for over three years, I was a regular to these sociable brunches, usually held on a Friday - the first day of the weekend over there then. But in Scotland, we've always had to forgo the bottomless part of the weekend brunch. Our licensing laws mean that no venue can supply anyone with endless drinks, therefore a limit of three or four is imposed. The Veuve Clicquot picnic brunch is running until September at the Old Course Hotel. | contributed The latest addition to the weekend brunch is the Veuve Clicquot Champagne picnic brunch, which is taking place on the first Sunday of the month at The Old Course Hotel in St Andrews from June until September. The ticketed event has been a sell-out success so far, and sees guests enjoy the three-hour buffet, picnic brunch in the hotel's bright and airy conservatory as well as on the lawn outside, with its sweeping views of the Old Course, weather permitting. When we visited early this month, the menu consisted of ham, cheese and salad focaccia sandwiches; pork pies, onion bhajis, a selection of cheeses; chutney, picalilli; charcuterie; vegetable crudités and hummus dips. For dessert there was tiramisu; chocolate brownie, a selection of macaroons and shortbread as well as large jars of sweets such as Skittles and jelly beans. To accompany the picnic, there is three glasses of Veuve Clicquot Champagne or French Bloom – a refined, alcohol-free sparkling alternative from Limoux, France. There was also live music from a DJ. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The elegant setting and good food was as close to a Dubai-style brunch as I've attended back home - just the grey skies and occasional rain shower reminded us that we were in Scotland. The picnic brunch runs from noon-3pm. But for those wanting to make an afternoon and evening of it, you can head up to The Deck where incredible views of West Sands Beach, the Old Course and St Andrews can be enjoyed, day or night. There's also private pods to keep guests cosy if it's a cooler day, and The Deck's own fully-stocked bar means you will not need to go far for refreshments. Furthermore, within the hotel, guests can also enjoy the Champagne bar, offering Veuve Clicquot by the glass or bottle, available at an additional charge. The Veuve Clicquot Picnic Brunch series will be held on August 3 and September 7.

Originally, the tranquil spot was thought to be a monastic site before later transforming into a popular day-tripper spot. Then, in the 19th century, it became a popular resort with steamboats and the Eel Pie Island Hotel. When the hotel later closed in 1967, the island became a hippie commune and evolved as a creative community. Today, the island still boasts marks of its past, while the people who live there include a number of artists. It's one of London's best-kept secrets as it is only open to the public twice a year. And this past weekend I wandered over the footbridge that separates the island from the mainland, to explore the jungle on the island. Full of giant palm leaves looming overhead, the island doesn't take too long to explore and can be done in just an hour. And standing at the entrance way to the island, I felt like I was exploring Little Venice in Los Angeles. To get to the artists' workshops, I followed a meandering path taking me past wood-panelled homes - many decorated with enamel signs, American-style mailboxes and odd treasures. 'I tried out the Race Across the World Experience in London' The names of places also fitted the Californian vibe with names including 'Palm Beach', 'Copper Beach' and 'Love Shack'. Reaching the end of the path is an operational boatyard like felt something out of a movie. On the other side of the slipway is where you'll find the workshops of the island's 26 artists, selling a range of art, sculptures and ceramics. The workshops are all found nestled in the thick greenery and are surrounded by random abandoned items like water fountains and traffic cones. On the plus side, though, some of the workshops sell handmade tipples too, like Pimms, for just a fiver. You can explore the island and workshops for as long as you like on the day you have a ticket for, but everything can be visited in just an hour if you wish. Tickets to visit the island are also free. It takes less than 25 minutes to reach Twickenham via train from London Waterloo, and then Eel Pie Island is roughly a 10-minute walk from the station. After exploring the island, you can venture back to Twickenham high street, which boasts a number of independent shops and vibrant pubs. There is also a hidden island in the English Channel that had an exotic climate and some of the best sunsets in Europe. WHO doesn't want to Race Across the World like they do in the TV series? To ditch the 9-5 to go on an epic quest and see incredible destinations along the way? But let's face facts, most of us can't take months out of our lives to do that. So I tried out the best next thing, the new Race Across the World The Experience - and fans of the show (just like me) will love it. 5 I recruited my friends to play Race Across the World The Experience Credit: Alice Penwill 5 We ventured around London solving puzzles and brain teasers Credit: Alice Penwill On one of the hottest weekends of the year, myself and a team of three willing friends, met at the game's starting point: London Liverpool Street. As a fan of the BBC series Race Across the World that sees contestants racing across multiple countries without using flights or smartphones for a huge cash prize, I was desperate to try out the UK version that launched this spring in both London and Manchester. Just like the series, the experience is a race against the clock to get from one checkpoint to the next. But unlike the show, you get there by solving lots of puzzles, which are sent through WhatsApp - which is very against the rules of the show, but essential for the experience. To begin, I simply typed 'ready' into my screen and despite having no idea what to expect, sent the message, and the experience began. The first stop was a cafe where I told the man behind the counter I was 'with the race', and he handed over very first task, which was one of the few physical puzzles. It was very maths-heavy, so I wasn't off to a great start and had to take a step back while my friends took over. The answer led us to the very first checkpoint, where the clock began to tick. There are three legs throughout, with options to take different routes along the way varying in complexity and cost. Along the way you have to solve riddles that will guide you to the checkpoint, and keep an eye out because the answers are simple but easy to miss, like a name on an engraving or plaque. I went on my first Disney cruise with classy champagne bars, watercoasters and West End-style shows 5 There are some physical puzzles around London too Credit: Alice Penwill WhatsApp is crucial as you text the answers throughout to confirm you're in the correct location and not aimlessly wandering about. If you don't know the area around Liverpool Street very well, the experience is still very doable as long as you pay attention to what you see. Just like in the TV series, you need 'money' to continue. Each route you choose takes cash out of your budget which initially is £30. To top this up you'll have to 'work', although there's no pulling pints in a London pub - instead, this is done is by solving tricky brain teasers. On the weekend we did the race, it happened to be one of the hottest weekends of the year but you do get breaks and plenty of time to enjoy them too. After reaching each checkpoint, the clock stops to give your team an optional break and at each is a venue where you get an exclusive discount off drinks and snacks. My team and I stopped in at one of the pubs to enjoy a cold drink and some much-needed shade. 5 All the routes cost money which you can top up by doing 'work' tasks Credit: Alice Penwill If you are a large group, you can be split into teams to play against each other with different start locations, but will end in the same place. If you choose to play as a whole team instead, you will be put against other teams with similar times to you. At each leg the game will update you on how you do in comparison, and it does a lot to stir the competitive spirit - by the end, my team and I had set ourselves a fast pace in order to come out on top. At the very end, we got our results and were pretty chuffed to find ourselves at the top of our leader board, and in the top 17 per cent of overall racers. The race can take up to three hours which doesn't include breaks. We completed the experience in just under two hours, but with our breaks, were out around three and a half. The website says that you can play the game multiple times, as there are route variations - but these aren't guaranteed to be different when you book. And one of the downsides is that the physical puzzles at each checkpoint also remain the same so you'll know the answer to those if you play more than once. But it is also running in Manchester so you can give the other experience a go in a different city. Tickets for Race Across the World The Experience are £50 per person. But the cost is reduced the more people you book, for example, a team of eight adults is £200, which works out as £25 each. The opening times are during Monday–Saturday from 9am to 7.30pm (last entry at 7.30pm) Sunday 9.30am to 4.30pm (last entry at 4.30pm). My Top Tips for completing the Race Across the World The Experience Dress for the occasion Wear comfy shoes and bring some water and snacks too if you don't want to take advantage of the checkpoints. Consider playing work puzzles Play work puzzles throughout the game even if you have money in your budget- the more money you have at the end, the better, as this counts towards your result. Check your spelling You have to send answers to the puzzles through WhatsApp and when you do, double check the spelling. We were caught out by auto correct and receive a fault which affected our score. It's in the details Input everyone's phone number before the experience begins so the whole team can read the questions throughout the game. Lots have images and prompts, so if you want a good time, this is key. Running or walking? Speaking of, decide at the very start what your game-plan is, whether you want to win the race or take your time so everyone's on the same page.
