Medvedev outlasts Zverev to set up Halle final against Bublik
Daniil Medvedev reached his first ATP Tour final for 15 months as he outlasted Germany's world number three Alexander Zverev 7-6(3) 6-7(1) 6-4 at the Halle Open on Saturday.
The Russian former world number one could have spared himself some overtime had he not let three match points slip in the second set, but he eventually got the job done in just under three hours.
"I am happy with my level, I played great," Medvedev said. "I would have loved to finish on the match points (in the second set). The first one I went for it and missed it. The second one I went a bit slower to wait for a mistake and he made a great point. I am happy to win in the end."
Medvedev, who now has a 13-7 career record against Zverev, will play Kazakhstan's Alexander Bublik in Sunday's final where he will seek his 21st Tour-level title.
He needed treatment for a nosebleed at 4-4 in an intense first set but was gifted the first-set tiebreaker as Zverev offered up a clutch of unforced errors.
Zverev was broken at the start of the second set but clawed his way back and then saved three match points when serving at 5-6 before holding serve in an extended 12th game to set up a tiebreak in which he played some precise tennis.
Medvedev quickly regrouped though and was the dominant player in the decider.
Whatever the outcome of the final, he will return to the world's top 10 on Monday.
A rejuvenated Bublik lost the first set against Karen Khachanov but hit back to win 4-6 7-6(5) 6-4 and stay on course for a second Halle title after winning it in 2023.
After a career slump, Bublik has produced a superb run of form including reaching his first Grand Slam quarter-final at Roland Garros and beating world number one Jannik Sinner in the second round in Halle.

As expected, it was the Ducati machines of the Marquez brothers and Bagnaia who traded fastest laps early in the session but Quartararo laid down the gauntlet when he clocked one minute and 31.047 seconds. Alex and Marc then broke the one minute and 31 seconds barrier but Quartararo and Bagnaia responded by going faster to take the top two spots. A desperate Marc pushed too hard on his final lap and went off track, settling for fourth-fastest, marking only the second time he is off the front row on the red Ducati, while Alex was livid with himself when he could not set a faster lap. Bagnaia has won at Assen in the last three years and the Italian said he was happy with the feeling on the bike after struggling early in the season, with the twice champion claiming only one victory in the first nine rounds. "I'm very happy. It's the best weekend so far this season... Surely this afternoon will be tough but we need to start well, set our pace and see if I can win," Bagnaia said. Marc will have Aprilia's Marco Bezzecchi and VR46 Racing's Franco Morbidelli for company on the second row.

Spain's Bonmati hospitalised with viral meningitis days before Euro 2025
Midfielder Aitana Bonmati, Ballon d'Or winner for the last two years, has been hospitalised with viral meningitis less than a week before Spain begin their Women's Euro 2025 campaign, coach Montse Tome said. The 27-year-old missed Friday's 3-1 win over Japan in a friendly as Spain continued building up to their first Group B match against Portugal on July 3. Bonmati shared a picture of herself watching the match from a hospital bed in an Instagram story. "The doctors say that it is controlled. Players forced to give up vacation to play Club World Cup, says Raphinha
Brazil's Barcelona forward Raphinha regretted that the players were not consulted about extending their season to play at the Club World Cup, adding that nobody should be obliged to give up their vacation time. The first expanded edition of the Club World Cup started on June 14 and will run until July 13. The competition followed the European league season which concluded in late May and an international window at the beginning of June. "Speaking particularly as someone who plays for a European team, we would (currently) be on vacation," Raphinha said. "Marquinhos and Beraldo, from Paris St Germain, won the Champions League and didn't even get to celebrate properly. They came to the national team and then went to the Club World Cup. They still haven't stopped. "Many say that this is an excuse. It may or may not be, but having to give up our vacations out of obligation is very complicated. It's our right. Everyone deserves at least a month of vacation. And many of them won't get it." Most of the major European leagues will be back in action in mid to late August, with the pre-seasons starting early in the month. "If PSG reach the Club World Cup final, they will have the Super Cup right away. It doesn't stop," Raphinha added. "It depends on your point of view. From my point of view, it's very bad to give up your vacation to play something that you are forced to do. At no point did they ask the players if they wanted to.
