Punjab rolls out 'Hawk Eye' surveillance
The innovative step, spearheaded by Director General Environment Imran Hamid Sheikh, is part of the cutting-edge "Hawk Eye Project," which formally commenced aerial environmental monitoring across the province.
According to department officials, thermal technology-equipped drones and a specially trained GIS wing have been deployed in the field.
These advanced drones will not only identify industries and entities engaged in environmentally harmful activities but will also provide oversight on the performance of field staff, ensuring accountability.
DG Imran Hamid Sheikh stated that under the Hawk Eye Project, a comprehensive e-mapping of all industries and brick kilns across Punjab has begun. He emphasised that aerial surveillance would allow for real-time detection of environmental violations, significantly improving enforcement mechanisms.
During the project's inaugural surveillance operation, the GIS team identified three active pyrolysis plants in the Mehmood Booti area of Lahore. A detailed report was immediately submitted to the DG Environment, and an explanation will be sought from the Lahore field office regarding the matter.
Furthermore, the team discovered four other industrial units and an empty plot containing hundreds of sacks filled with carbon. Experts have warned that such carbon stockpiles pose significant environmental risks and require urgent action.
Authorities assert that the Hawk Eye Project represents a groundbreaking step in environmental monitoring and marks the beginning of a new era in environmental governance in Punjab.
Meanwhile, terming it a "defining moment" in the provincial government's efforts to combat climate change challenges, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz said the launch of Pakistan's first-ever smart environmental protection force was a bold leap toward a cleaner, greener and climate-resilient future.
"Equipped with drone surveillance, real-time AQI monitors, mobile labs, and specialiSed squads across key sectorsindustry, water, plastic, agriculture, transport, and fuelthis pioneering Force is committed to rapid response, accurate enforcement, and sustained air quality improvement," she said in a post on 'X'.

LAHORE: Opposition Leader in Punjab Assembly Malik Ahmad Bhachar castigated the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) governments in the centre and Punjab for burdening the people with more taxes and politicising the Swat incident. The deaths of 23 children in Pakpattan due to a lack of oxygen and the 20 children who died during delivery within a week also deserve attention, and those responsible should be held accountable,' he said, adding that there was widespread regret over the Swat incident. He pointed out that in Punjab, 1,132 health centres were being shut down, impacting 130,000 employees, many of whom have served for 20 years; they deserve an explanation for why these employees were losing their jobs. 'Notably, no statement has been issued by the honourable lady regarding the deaths,' he added. 'In a cunning move, Maryam renamed the Jinnah Institute of Cardiology after herself, but now it was being claimed that the notification was fake. This family seems to have a penchant for naming every hospital, school, and road after themselves,' he added. On the suspension of their provincial legislators, Bhachar claimed that they were suspended so that the government could pass its bills. 'The authority to requisition was taken away from us. We believe this Assembly is unnecessary; we have already referred to it as a fake assembly. Our leader expressed appreciation for the members of the Punjab Assembly who refused to bow down to figures like Maryam Nawaz and staged a vigorous protest,' he added. LAHORE: On the direction of Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif, special measures have been taken for the first time to monitor and prevent fake news for establishing law and order during Muharram-ul-Haram. A new system has been implemented and a special Control Room has been established in this regard. The CM directed to launch strict legal action against the dissemination of fake news on the social media during Muharram-ul-Haram. On the direction of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, tracing of people who are involved in disseminating controversial contents on the social media accounts has been launched and a strict legal action is being taken. Dozens of controversial social media accounts have been blocked across Punjab on the report of the Special Branch. On the direction of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, a Cyber Patrol Unit will perform its duties for the first time in the province during Ashura. A special portal of PITB has also been activated for monitoring and reporting objectionable social media contents. The special cell will monitor 24/7 social media contents pertaining to religious hatred and sectarianism. After reporting controversial content on the portal, the account is blocked and the whereabouts of the account holder is traced. The Chief Minister directed to initiate special measures to ensure a complete ban on the promotion and publication of contents based on religious hatred and speeches. She also directed to ensure a complete ban on the usage of drone cameras under any circumstance. She directed to carry out the deployment of a Quick Response Force to ensure complete security of Muharram processions and gatherings. Iron pipes will be installed on all sides for security purposes during the Muharram processions. Special cameras will be installed at the entrance gate of every procession during the Ashura so that the visitors can be identified by their faces. The CM directed to deploy female police officers and personnel for the security of female mourners in the gatherings and processions. She highlighted, 'The Karbala incident imparts us a lesson to adopt peace and tolerance. All possible steps will be taken to ensure peace and order during the Ashura.' She asserted, 'In the context of the current global situation, the holy month of Muharram is extremely sensitive and there is absolutely no room for committing negligence by the relevant stakeholders in the performance of their duties.' Nawaz Sharif Flyover opens to traffic
The construction of the Nawaz Sharif Flyover at Khawaja Corporation Chowk on Adiala Road has been completed and the overpass has been opened for public traffic. Although an official inauguration was scheduled for June 30 by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, the ceremony has been postponed. The flyover, completed at a cost of Rs2.3 billion, is part of a larger infrastructure development project that includes two underpasses and an underground pedestrian walkway on Mall Road. These projects, built at a cost of over Rs4.38 billion, have also been completed. However, they remain closed until the chief minister provides a new inauguration date. According to officials from the Punjab Communication and Works Department, once approval is granted, the underpasses on Mall Road will also be opened for public use, similar to the early opening of the Nawaz Sharif Flyover. Meanwhile, plans have been finalised for constructing additional underpasses at Qasim Market, Race Course, and Chairing Cross on Peshawar Road. A proposal for two flyovers and three underpasses at Kachehri Chowk is also under consideration, though no official timeline has been announced by the Punjab government for the start of work on these projects.
