Seven flowers that are so easy to grow they can be planted in any conditions

Daily Mirror4 days ago
If you're new to gardening or simply want to take a break from high-maintenance plants, the following seven flowers are basically fool-proof and will thrive virtually anywhere
Summer is upon us, and it's the perfect time to plant some f l owers to spruce up your garden. But remember, it's not just about what looks most appealing - budding gardeners need to consider the specific needs of their plants, ensuring they are placed in an environment that encourages growth.
For example, hostas will burn under the midday sun, so it would be inappropriate to use a full-sun garden bed, while hydrangeas don't like rain gardens. But don't worry, as there are at least seven flowers that will thrive if you plant them pretty much anywhere, whether in clay soil or beneath a tree, they will all but grow all by themselves.

1. Zinnia
A robust annual, zinnias (Zinnia) are versatile bloomers that can flourish in a variety of soils and conditions, though they do prefer basking in full sun and may not fare as well in shaded spots.

Expect a riot of daisy-like, multicoloured blooms in every shade under the sun, from vivid yellows to pinks. They can tower anywhere between six to 48 inches and spread 12 to 18 inches wide, with a preference for well-drained soils.
2. Purple coneflower
The hardy purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea) is another trooper, able to withstand drought, clay soil, heat, humidity, and even a smattering of shade, making it a top pick for pollinators like bees, butterflies and other insects. It's a perennial plant.

According to marthastewart.com, birds will happily peck at the seed heads during winter. The only conditions this purple beauty can't handle are deep shade and waterlogged soil.
They can stretch 24 to 36 inches tall and spread 18 to 24 inches wide, thriving in anything from full sun to partial shade and most well-drained soils, as per the Express.

3. Whorled tickseed
Don't be fooled by the dainty, smaller blooms of the whorled tickseed (Coreopsis verticillate) – it's a tough cookie. Its clusters of daisy-shaped flowers radiate gold and yellow, and it can endure heat and poor soils, and a touch of light shade.
However, steer clear of deep shade and waterlogged soils, as it can lead to root rot. It will grow 12 to 18 inches tall and 12 inches wide and thrives in full sun and average, dry soils.

4. French marigolds
French marigolds (Tagetes patula) are another adaptable flower that can thrive in various soil conditions and either full sun or partial shade.
They can be planted just about anywhere. They're wind and drought-resistant and pair well with vegetable patches as they keep certain pests, like nematodes, at bay.

They'll sprout to a height of six to 12 inches and spread six to 10 inches wide. This perennial doesn't require deadheading and features striking purple blooms and upright leafy stems.
5. Blazing star
The Blazing star (Liatris spicata) is hardy enough to withstand poor soil conditions, heat, and humidity, and is low-maintenance. It's not prone to serious disease or pest issues. This perennial never needs deadheading and boasts spiking purple flowers and upright leafy stalks.

It'll reach a height of two to four feet and a width of one to two feet.
6. Blanket flower
Sporting daisy-like blossoms, the native blanket flower (Gaillardia aristata) will add a splash of red and yellow to your garden. It's a long-blooming perennial that thrives in heat and drought, and can cope with poor soils, such as sandy soils.

However, it's best to steer clear of humid areas and wet clay. It grows eight to 12 inches tall and 12 to 18 inches wide, flourishing in full sun and average soil conditions.
7. Cosmos
The saucer-shaped disk flower cosmos (Cosmos bipinnatus) is characterised by its delightful, saucer-shaped disk flowers that thrive in a range of conditions, favouring average soil. They're rarely affected by diseases or insects.
It can grow from one to four feet tall and two to three feet wide, and does well in full sun to partial shade.

Air fryers will be free of grease in 15 minutes if you use 2 ingredients — no scrubbing

A TikTok user has shared a simple hack to clean an air fryer basket using just two household items - and it doesn't involve any scrubbing Air fryers have become a must-have in the kitchen, but if not cleaned properly or regularly, they can cause problems. The design of the air fryer allows food particles, grease and oils to build up. ‌ If neglected, this grime can accumulate and affect the appliance's performance over time, resulting in substandard or unpleasant meals. ‌ If your air fryer requires a deep clean, one TikToker has revealed a simple method using just two items, promising sparkling results in minutes without the need for hard scrubbing. Here's what you need to do. ‌ Before you begin cleaning, make sure all baskets are removed from the appliance. Then, generously sprinkle baking soda over the basket. Baking soda is effective at tackling any build-up of grease and grime. Follow this by drizzling washing up liquid over the baking soda, reports the Express. ‌ Next, TikToker Ida boils a kettle of water which she then pours over the air fryer baskets. The hot water will react with the baking soda and washing up liquid, helping to dislodge stubborn food particles. Allow the solution to soak for 15 minutes. After the soaking period, discard the dirty water and rinse away any remaining residue with more water. All the grime should have loosened from the basket and be easily rinsed down the sink. Baking soda has been praised as an outstanding cleaning solution, owing to its slightly abrasive consistency that tackles grime effortlessly. ‌ Its rough texture proves ideal for removing persistent dirt and food particles, making the scrubbing task considerably easier. Vanguard Cleaning emphasises another advantage of baking soda: its alkaline characteristics render it a superb odour eliminator, especially when dealing with stubborn food aromas in air fryers. When mixed with washing-up liquid, the mixture acquires extra surfactants, which excel at surrounding and removing grease and grime from surfaces. Beyond its cleaning capabilities, baking soda also serves as a natural deodoriser, guaranteeing that any lingering odours are completely eliminated after a thorough clean. Dr Oetker explains the science behind baking soda's smell-busting abilities, explaining: "Most nasty smells in the air contain some sort of acid. As an alkali, baking soda reacts with those acids and neutralises them."

Pet expert shares manipulative way cats secretly 'train' humans

Cats secretly 'train' their owners with tactic many would mistake for affection Cat owners might think their pets are just showing affection or want to strike up a conversation - but a meow may mean something else Cats see and understand lot more than most give them credit for (Image: Suzanne Marshall via Getty Images ) Being your pet's favourite might feel like a privilege, but according to a pet behaviourist, it could come with certain conditions. Amanda Campion, a clinical animal behaviourist who has spent decades studying the lives and mannerisms of cats, claims that a cat's communication can reveal much about its perception of the world. In a TikTok video, she explained: "Your cat might talk your ear off, but ignores everyone else - there's a reason. Meowing is a learnt behaviour and it's actually a way of [cats] communicating with a human. Very rarely will cats meow to each other, saving them for us humans." Even in a bustling household full of people, if your cat consistently seeks you out and meows, it's not necessarily a sign of affection, she said. Instead, it's their unique and rather manipulative method of training you, she claims. Amanda said: "Cats will very often train one human that they have found out gives them the best results from that meow. So, if it's you that they are often meowing at, and not your partner, then it is because you've delivered quick and fast results, whereas your partner hasn't." The pet expert also noted that people who engage in 'conversations' with their cats tend to have more interactive relationships, reports the Express. She added: "They might associate your scent and your voice with feeding and with care." Content cannot be displayed without consent Article continues below Amanda suggested that by making your feline companions feel secure, they are more likely to engage in conversation with you. She noted that the variety in a cat's tone can be "subtle", yet with careful observation, it becomes obvious that cats often have a distinct "voice" for different people they interact with. Not all cat types are equally vocal. While all cats can meow, purr, hiss, and growl, some breeds are known for being more vocal than others - such as Siamese, Oriental shorthairs and Burmese cats, according to Animal Friends Pet Insurance. Cat owners were eager to share their own stories in the comments section. One joked: "So what you're telling me is my cat considers me the primary servant over my husband?" Another added: "Makes sense! Mine has trained me well!" A third shared: "OMG yes! They beg my partner for food but never beg me!" Your cat might be 'training you' if it does this (Image: Getty ) Why is my cat meowing so much? According to Cats Protection, the amount of meowing your cat is doing might signal something wrong. The charity adds: "Cats rarely have a change in behaviour for no reason". Guidance suggested observing the cat's body language if it's meowing more than usual. A spokesperson said: "If their ears are turned out to the side or back, rather than relaxed and facing forwards, that's a sign that they may be feeling anxious. If the eyes and pupils are wide, they might be worried." Article continues below They further recommended: "If you have noticed a change in the type or frequency of sounds your cat is making, it is best to take them to the vet to rule out any underlying health problems."

Air fryer chips taste 'gourmet' if one cheap ingredient is added after cooking

Air fryer chips taste 'gourmet' if one cheap ingredient is added after cooking If you've got an air fryer at home, you'll know how brilliant they are for cooking quick and tasty meals that are often healthier than using other traditional cooking methods - including chips Air fryer chips are so easy to make, and with the right ingredients, they'll taste even better (Image: Rafa Jodar via Getty Images ) If you're the proud owner of an air fryer, you'll be well aware of how amazing they are for whipping up quick, delicious meals that are often healthier than those cooked using traditional methods. The versatility of an air fryer is impressive, but sometimes it's the simplest dishes that truly shine - and homemade chips certainly fit the bill. ‌ Oven-cooking chips can be a lengthy process, and deep frying isn't exactly the healthiest option, making the air fryer an appealing alternative. But if you're aiming for a 'gourmet' taste and extra crispiness, there's one crucial ingredient to add post-cooking. ‌ READ MORE: Everyone uses air fryers but there are three things you should never put in them This recipe was shared by food blogger Ana Negoita, and once you've given it a whirl, you'll never prepare chips any other way. If you've yet to sprinkle parmesan on your chips after they've been cooked, now's the time to try. According to Ana, this ingredient imparts a 'rich and cheesy' finish to the chips, elevating them to 'gourmet' status and tasting better than anything you'd find in a restaurant. Article continues below It only takes a few seconds to dust the chips with parmesan after they've finished cooking in the air fryer, but it significantly enhances the flavour, reports the Express. For an additional crunch, Ana suggests soaking the sliced potatoes in ice water and incorporating some cornflour into the spice mix - another minor yet crucial step in the procedure. Here's everything you need to whip up the perfect air fryer chips at home. ‌ Adding parmesan to your homemade chips makes them so much more flavourful (Image: Getty ) Air fryer parmesan chips Ingredients 800 g potatoes One tbsp cornstarch Two tbsp olive oil One tsp garlic powder One tsp paprika Grated Parmesan cheese Fresh parsley, chopped ‌ Method Firstly, peel the potatoes and cut them into evenly sized chip shapes. Make sure to rinse the slices thoroughly under cold water to get rid of any excess starch. Next, place the potatoes in a large bowl filled with ice and cold water and let them soak for 30 minutes. After soaking, drain them and pat them completely dry with a clean kitchen towel - this will ensure they become extra crispy. ‌ In a large bowl, mix the dried potatoes with cornflour, olive oil, garlic powder, paprika powder, salt, and pepper. Toss them well until the spice mix has coated all of the chips. Preheat your air fryer to 210C. Then, arrange the chips in the air fryer in a single layer - you might need to do this in several batches to avoid overcrowding. Cook for 18-22 minutes, giving the basket a shake halfway through, until you've got perfectly crispy, golden brown chips. Article continues below While they're still hot, transfer them to a bowl and sprinkle on the grated parmesan and parsley, gently tossing them to ensure all the chips are covered.
