Severe Cold Front Brings Snow In South Africa
A severe cold front sweeping across South Africa since the weekend brought heavy snowfall which has led to road closures, power outages and a fatal road accident, officials said.
Five people were killed in a road accident along the N2 highway due to the adverse weather, Eastern Cape transport department spokesperson Unathi Binqose told local broadcaster Newzroom Afrika on Tuesday.
The South African Weather Service warned citizens late last week there would be a big drop in temperatures this week across the country, accompanied by disruptive rain, damaging winds, and snow over eastern areas.
South Africa regularly receives snowfall during its winter months from June through August, with temperatures diving below zero degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit).
Snow has been reported since Monday across provinces including Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Free State, prompting closures along sections of the N2 highway that connects the provinces, according to the KwaZulu-Natal transport department.
Power utility Eskom said in a post on X that it was "experiencing a high number of customer calls nationally, due to widespread power outages caused by inclement weather."
More resources were being secured to ensure prompt resolution to the power outages, Mr Eskom said.
The weather service forecast that the cold front would persist through midweek.

Weather today: IMD issues orange alert in Shimla, Pune; Delhi to remain cloudy

Meanwhile in Haryana, yellow alerts have been issued in Karnal, Rohtak, Yamuna Nagar, Jind and an orange alert in Ambala for July 2. Shimla rainfall to continue For the past few days Shimla has been hit by heavy rains with landslides worsening the condition. According to the Shimla regional Met Department, orange alert has been issued for Mandi, Kangra and Hamirpur, while yellow alert has been issued for Chamba, Kullu, Shimla, Solan and Bilaspur. The weather office also warned of surface run-off or inundation that may occur at some fully saturated soils and low-lying areas due to the constant rainfall. Moreover, light to moderate rainfall is very likely across most parts of the state on July 2, 3, 6, and 7, and at many places on July 4 and 5. Cloudy skies to prevail in Delhi For Delhi-NCR, there is no warning as of now and the weather is expected to remain generally cloudy with very light to light rain accompanied with thunderstorms and lightning. The maximum temperature is expected to remain between 33-35 degrees Celsius while the minimum temperature could be between 25-27 degrees Celsius. No heat wave conditions will prevail. Orange alert in parts of Maharashtra An orange alert has been issued by IMD for July 2 in Pune, Satara and Kohlapur, while a yellow alert has been sounded for Raigad, Nashik, Jalgaon, Nagpur, Chandrapur and others. Overall, very heavy rain is predicted around Gujarat region, Madhya Maharashtra, Konkan and Goa region. According to the Mumbai regional Met department, the sky will be generally cloudy with intermittent spells of moderate to heavy rainfall in Mumbai and suburbs. Maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 31 degrees Celsius and 27 degrees Celsius in Mumbai.

Eiffel Tower shut for tourists as Paris swelters under heat wave
As heat waves grip most of Europe, the summit of Paris' Eiffel Tower has been shut for visitors with temperatures in France's capital expected to reach 38.3 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. According to a statement on Eiffel Tower's website, the landmark would close early at 4pm (local time). The website added a few advisory for the visitors which stated that the last entry for ticket holders would be 2:30pm (local time) and visitors without tickets are 'asked to postpone their visit until after Thursday.' Eiffel Tower's website also urged tourists to protect themselves from the sun and stay hydrated regularly during the period of high temperatures. The website stated that fountains are available along the paths leading to the forecourt for people seeking respite from the heat wave. Barcelona records hottest June in over 100 years as heat wave grips Europe
Barcelona has recorded its hottest month of June since records started over a century ago, Spain's national weather service said. The Can Fabra Observatory, located on a hill overlooking Barcelona, reported an average temperature of 26°C (78 degrees Fahrenheit), breaking records since 1914. The previous hottest average for June was 25.6°C in 2003. The same weather station said that a single-day high of 37.9 C (100 F) for June was recorded on Monday, June 30. Barcelona is usually spared the worst heat in Spain, thanks to its location between hills and the Mediterranean in Spain's northeastern corner. But most of the country has been gripped by the first heat wave of the year. Europe burning France and the rest of Europe were still in the grips of the first major heat wave this summer with health warnings in effect Tuesday (July 1, 2025), even as conditions began to improve in some parts of the region. Punishing temperatures were forecast to reach 40°C in Paris and to stay unusually high in Belgium and the Netherlands. In contrast, temperatures were falling in Portugal, where no red heat warnings were issued.
