Severe Cold Front Brings Snow In South Africa
A severe cold front sweeping across South Africa since the weekend brought heavy snowfall which has led to road closures, power outages and a fatal road accident, officials said.
Five people were killed in a road accident along the N2 highway due to the adverse weather, Eastern Cape transport department spokesperson Unathi Binqose told local broadcaster Newzroom Afrika on Tuesday.
The South African Weather Service warned citizens late last week there would be a big drop in temperatures this week across the country, accompanied by disruptive rain, damaging winds, and snow over eastern areas.
South Africa regularly receives snowfall during its winter months from June through August, with temperatures diving below zero degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit).
Snow has been reported since Monday across provinces including Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Free State, prompting closures along sections of the N2 highway that connects the provinces, according to the KwaZulu-Natal transport department.
Power utility Eskom said in a post on X that it was "experiencing a high number of customer calls nationally, due to widespread power outages caused by inclement weather."
More resources were being secured to ensure prompt resolution to the power outages, Mr Eskom said.
The weather service forecast that the cold front would persist through midweek.

Eiffel Tower shut for tourists as Paris swelters under heat wave
As heat waves grip most of Europe, the summit of Paris' Eiffel Tower has been shut for visitors with temperatures in France's capital expected to reach 38.3 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. According to a statement on Eiffel Tower's website, the landmark would close early at 4pm (local time). The website added a few advisory for the visitors which stated that the last entry for ticket holders would be 2:30pm (local time) and visitors without tickets are 'asked to postpone their visit until after Thursday.' Eiffel Tower's website also urged tourists to protect themselves from the sun and stay hydrated regularly during the period of high temperatures. The website stated that fountains are available along the paths leading to the forecourt for people seeking respite from the heat wave. The top of Eiffel Tower has been shut but the first and second floor of the iconic attraction remains open, however, staff are urging visitors without pre-booked tickets to postpone their trip. 🌐 Due to the heatwave, and to ensure everyone's comfort and safety, the summit will be closed through July 2. To all my visitors, please protect yourself from the sun and stay hydrated 🥤👒 — La tour Eiffel (@LaTourEiffel) June 30, 2025 Amid soaring temperatures in Paris, parts of southern France have seen mercury rising to 40 degrees Celsius as the French government issued high-level heat wave alerts across 84 regions of the country. French far-right leader Marine Le Pen on Monday criticized the French government's handling of the heat wave crisis and called for 'a major air conditioning equipment plan'. Le Pen said ordinary citizens are facing the brunt of the scorching heat while 'so-called French elites' remain in climate-controlled environments, Politico reported. According to a CNN report, a marine heat wave has combined with a powerful heat dome in the Mediterranean Sea which is causing Europe to swelter under the scorching heat wave. It is a new pattern which has become frequent in recent times as the planet warms up. The influence of Mediterranean Seat heat waves have become more significant and torturous in recent summers, with ocean heat playing a vital role in temperature rise on land, which in turn triggers deadly floods and wildfires.

Barcelona records hottest June in over 100 years as heat wave grips Europe
Barcelona has recorded its hottest month of June since records started over a century ago, Spain's national weather service said. The Can Fabra Observatory, located on a hill overlooking Barcelona, reported an average temperature of 26°C (78 degrees Fahrenheit), breaking records since 1914. The previous hottest average for June was 25.6°C in 2003. The same weather station said that a single-day high of 37.9 C (100 F) for June was recorded on Monday, June 30. Barcelona is usually spared the worst heat in Spain, thanks to its location between hills and the Mediterranean in Spain's northeastern corner. But most of the country has been gripped by the first heat wave of the year. Europe burning France and the rest of Europe were still in the grips of the first major heat wave this summer with health warnings in effect Tuesday (July 1, 2025), even as conditions began to improve in some parts of the region. Punishing temperatures were forecast to reach 40°C in Paris and to stay unusually high in Belgium and the Netherlands. In contrast, temperatures were falling in Portugal, where no red heat warnings were issued. In France, the national weather agency Météo-France placed several departments under the highest red alert, with the Paris region particularly hard hit. The heat wave — defined as consecutive days of very high temperature — is expected to intensify Tuesday and more than 1,300 schools were expected to be partially or fully closed, the Education Ministry said. Visitors to the Eiffel Tower without tickets were told to postpone their visits, and the summit of the city's landmark was closed until Thursday. Farther south, 17 of Italy's 27 major cities were experiencing a heat wave, according to the Health Ministry. Météo-France also warned of the heightened risk of wildfires due to the drought-stricken soil, compounded by a lack of rain in June and the recent surge in temperature. Climate experts warn that future summers are likely to be hotter than any recorded to date. By 2100, France could be up to 4°C warmer, with temperatures exceeding 40°C expected every year and extreme heat spikes potentially reaching 50°C. According to Météo-France, the country may face a tenfold increase in the number of heat wave days by 2100. In Portugal, Lisbon was forecast to reach 33°C, typical for this time of the year, though some inland areas could still see peaks of 43°C, according to the national weather agency. June temperature records were broken in two locations in Portugal on June 29.
