Government commits to increasing women-owned companies

By: Bernama Text Size: Women owned 219,015 businesses, making up 20.1pc of establishments in 2022 according to the Malaysian Department of Statistics (DoSM). Kuala Lumpur: The percentage of women-owned companies in Malaysia are still low compared to other Asean countries, at about 20 per cent or 210,000 companies out of all enterprises in the country. Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said the government through the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) would strive to increase the percentage through various new programmes and policies.
Advertisement 'In helping women access overseas markets more effectively, the government is committed to providing trade facilities such as MADANI Digital Trade, Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS) and also trade missions to various countries,' he said during the opening ceremony of the Women in Export (WiEX) Forum 2025 earlier this week. Tengku Zafrul said the initiative implemented was open to women entrepreneurs who wanted to explore international markets, including emerging markets such as West Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe, which have high demand for Malaysian products. 'MATRADE also constantly monitors the participation of female entrepreneurs in international exhibitions and overseas trade missions so that women can become competitive exporters on the international stage,' he said. Meanwhile, MATRADE chairman Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican said the participation of Asian women in the economy, comprising only 30 to 35 per cent, shows that there are still untapped economic opportunities. 'Therefore, to assist women-owned companies in the export market, MATRADE has allocated 40 per cent of the RM14.89 million in export grants to 6,711 women-owned companies,' he said at the event. Regarding the organisation of WiEX, he said the forum was important as a meeting place to empower women in the export ecosystem and, by 2026, the forum would be known as the Women International Exporters Expo. 'The WiEX Forum has become the perfect platform to celebrate and recognise women entrepreneurs who want to make a name for themselves in the international arena. All the knowledge, inspiration and strategies shared today are valuable gifts that can guide their respective journeys,' he said. Therefore, Reezal Merican said MATRADE has launched an e-directory that serves as a bridge connecting products and services provided by women-owned companies. 'This platform will showcase to the world the great products and services produced by Malaysian women. It will facilitate business collaboration, build international networks and, most importantly, provide direct access to global markets. 'This initiative is in line with the National Women's Policy 2025-2030 and sustainable development goals, demonstrating the government's unwavering commitment to empowering women in the trade sector,' he added. Paris Court To Rule On Sulu Claim Annulment On Dec 9
KUALA LUMPUR, July 18 (Bernama) -- The Paris Court of Appeal has reserved its decision to Dec 9 on Malaysia's application to annul the USD14.9 billion final award in the arbitration case filed by individuals claiming to be heirs of the long-defunct Sultanate of Sulu. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, in a statement, said the decision followed a hearing on July 7, during which the court concluded its hearing on the merits for the annulment of the final award in the case. Azalina said during the hearing that the claimants had attempted to postpone the proceedings to enable them to respond to the written opinion of the Public Prosecutor of France. However, the court dismissed the request and proceeded with the hearing. 'In this context, Malaysia places its confidence in the Paris Court of Appeal's process and decision in bringing a definitive end to the so-called Sulu Claimants' illegal global enforcement efforts, similar to the positions adopted by the Spanish and Dutch courts,' Azalina said. The government has also reiterated its stance on the need for transparency in third-party litigation funding mechanisms to prevent their misuse against sovereign nations. 'Malaysia at the same time continues to advance its efforts to promote a global framework that places transparency at the centre of third-party litigation funding, ensuring that a mechanism intended to promote access to justice is not misused as an instrument of lawfare against sovereign states. 'International arbitration must be protected from attempts to extort sovereign states under the guise of arbitration claims,' Azalina said. She emphasised that the MADANI Government remained steadfast in defending Malaysia's sovereignty and the integrity of international arbitration.

Johor drafting measures to tackle rising food, transport and housing costs
KULAI: The Johor government is formulating mitigation measures to address rising food, transportation and housing costs, particularly in Johor Baru. State Investment, Trade, Consumer Affairs and Human Resources Committee chairman Lee Ting Han said a discussion on the matter was held today with the relevant state executive councillors. The meeting also touched on efforts to improve public transportation services and expand the Muafakat Johor bus network, while seeking ways to ease the people's financial burden. "We take note of public concerns raised during on-the-ground engagement and through social media. "The people of Johor are worried about what's to come, given the state's rapid economic growth. "So, how do we ensure that people can benefit from this growth, so that everyone, especially the younger generation, chooses to remain in Johor and has access to promising career prospects? "These are some of the challenges we must address," he told a press conference after attending the Sirim Silaturasa 2025 event at the Sirim Johor office today. He was commenting on a recent statement by Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, who said that Johor Bahru's cost of living had surpassed that of several other major Malaysian cities. Lee said that supply and demand are among the factors contributing to the rising costs, in addition to the state's rapid economic growth. "On housing, we've received feedback that rental rates are quite high. "As announced by the menteri besar, we will accelerate the construction of affordable housing. "Initially, we aimed to build 30,000 units by 2030, but the menteri besar has raised the target to 100,000 units by that time. "We are now making plans to meet this target," he said. Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul said his office has received a wide range of motions from the honourable Members of Parliament (MPs), indicating a packed and intense session ahead. 'So I call on the people on the ground, when the 13MP is tabled, they have to inform their MPs about what they want to be raised in Parliament. 'Tag their MPs (on social media) so that their voices can be heard. Don't wait until the MPs return to their constituencies to complain. Raise the issue while Parliament is in session,' he said after officiating the National Information Dissemination Centre (NADI) at Taman Pekan Baru today. Johari said the sitting will probably be extended into the night to accommodate the packed schedule, beginning daily at 10am and possibly continuing until 10pm or 11pm. Johari noted that the tabling of the 13MP is particularly significant as Malaysia holds the Asean Chairmanship this year, and it offers an opportunity to showcase the country's resilience and progress amid global uncertainties. In another development, he urged the public to fully utilise services made available at NADI centres to improve their livelihoods and economic opportunities. 'NADI isn't just about digital access or community programmes. It can be a one-stop centre for people to obtain vital information and explore business opportunities. 'It's a platform to gain knowledge not only academically but also across various fields. I encourage youth, especially, to take advantage of these centres to learn and engage with their communities,' he said.
