Over 500 expected at TOT MPOB 2025 to explore palm tech innovations in Selangor
KUCHING (June 7): More than 500 participants from the oil palm industry, including micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) operators and stakeholders interested in technology commercialisation, are expected to attend the Malaysian Palm Oil Board's (MPOB) Oil Palm Transfer of Technology (TOT) Programme 2025, scheduled for June 19 in Bandar Baru Bangi, Selangor.
According to MPOB in a statement yesterday, the TOT Programme – MPOB's annual flagship event – aims to offer commercialisation opportunities for palm-based technologies developed by MPOB researchers to industry players, local companies, and MSMEs.
The event will be launched by Minister of Plantation and Commodities, Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, and will present a wide spectrum of technologies across various segments of the oil palm value chain.
In the upstream sector, the programme will feature innovations such as elite planting materials, the applications of artificial intelligence in plantations, and integrated pest management techniques.
For the midstream sector, attendees will be introduced to processing and milling technologies designed for industrial application.
Meanwhile, in the downstream sector, the programme will highlight formulations used in personal care products, health food, and animal feed.
According to MPOB director-general Datuk Dr Ahmad Parveez Ghulam Kadir, the TOT Programme provides a vital platform for industry players to access new technologies and innovations, explore opportunities for research and commercial collaborations, secure intellectual property protection through technology licensing, and foster engagement in a sustainable palm innovation ecosystem.
'TOT MPOB 2025 will also carry a special theme to mark MPOB's 25th anniversary since its establishment on May 1, 2000. We will showcase technologies developed over the past 25 years that align with industry needs and commercialisation potential,' he said.
He added that MPOB's Research, Development and Commercialisation (R&D&C) platform is aimed at building a competitive and sustainable oil palm industry ecosystem.
Industry players, MSME entrepreneurs, researchers, investors, technopreneurs and other interested stakeholders are encouraged to participate in the TOT MPOB 2025 or visit the exhibition, which will be open until 5pm.

People-centric initiatives boost MSME sector in Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR: Recent government measures aimed at easing financial burdens on Malaysians are expected to provide significant relief to micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's announcements include continued fuel subsidies for RON95 at RM1.99 per litre and a postponement of toll rate increases on 10 major highways. Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick highlighted the direct benefits for MSMEs, particularly those reliant on transportation and logistics. 'Many businesses, especially in rural areas, depend on travel between urban and rural locations for sourcing materials and product deliveries. These measures will help reduce operational costs,' he said during an interview on Bernama Radio's Reaksi segment. Additional support comes in the form of the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) programme, which provides a one-off RM100 cash aid to Malaysians aged 18 and above. The government has also increased funding for the MADANI Rahmah Sales initiative, aimed at stimulating domestic spending. Ewon encouraged Malaysians to take advantage of the newly announced public holiday on September 15, coinciding with Malaysia Day, by exploring local tourism. 'Support rural tourism and cooperative-run destinations. There is immense potential in our local economy waiting to be tapped,' he said. The ministry is actively promoting cooperative-based tourism, with events like the National Cooperative Day celebration in Melaka running from tomorrow until Sunday. - Bernama

India's leather, footwear exports to UK could exceed USD 900 mn as FTA opens new opportunities for small artisans
New Delhi [India], July 24 (ANI): India's leather and footwear exports to the UK could exceed USD 900 million, marking a major leap forward for the sector. This growth is expected as the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) opens up new opportunities for small artisans and businesses across the country. The FTA offers duty-free access to the UK's USD 23 billion market, giving Indian Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) a strong advantage over other countries like Bangladesh, Cambodia, and Pakistan in labour-intensive sectors such as leather and footwear, textiles and clothing, gems and jewellery, furniture, and sports goods. This is expected to unlock vast new opportunities for Indian exporters. The agreement is also likely to enhance the financial stability of small businesses, particularly for artisans, women entrepreneurs, and craftsmen. By providing them with access to a large market like the UK, the FTA enables these groups to support their families and communities while becoming key players in global value chains. The FTA includes provisions that encourage MSMEs to utilise digital tools, adopt e-commerce, and transition to more sustainable production methods. These changes will not only enhance efficiency but also enable Indian products to reach a broader international audience. With stronger intellectual property rights (IPR) and geographical indication (GI) protections included in the deal, MSMEs' unique and traditional products are expected to gain better recognition globally. This can increase the value of their goods in foreign markets. Increased export opportunities in labour-intensive industries, such as textiles, leather, and footwear, are expected to raise demand for skilled artisans in hubs like Tirupur and Kanpur. This, in turn, could create more jobs and boost local economies. As exports rise, private sector players in India are also expected to increase their production capacity. This is likely to lead to increased employment and improved income for individuals involved in these industries. India is now well-positioned to become one of the top three suppliers of textiles, leather, and footwear to the UK. SMEs across different states are expected to expand their production, hire more workers, and contribute to the development of their communities. In addition to leather and textiles, MSMEs in other sectors, such as marine products, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, electronics, engineering, oilseeds, alcoholic beverages, and soft commodities, are also expected to benefit from the FTA by increasing production and innovation.
