Japanese actress Ryoko Hirosue diagnosed with bipolar; suspends activities
Weeks after allegedly assaulting a nurse, Japanese actress Ryoko Hirosue has announced that she will be suspending all entertainment activities to focus on her health issues.
An official site for the 44-year-old star posted a notice on May 2 explaining that Hirosue has been receiving treatment at a hospital in Tokyo after she was released from police custody on April 16.
She was arrested on April 8 for allegedly attacking a nurse at a hospital where she was taken to following a car accident.
The notice, put up by Hirosue's self-founded agency R.H., said she has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, a mental health condition characterised by extreme mood swings, and hyperthyroidism, a condition that can lead to unintended weight loss and heart palpitations.
'We deeply regret how both Hirosue herself and the people around her dismissed her illness and suffering as simply 'poor health'. Hirosue will now take a break from all entertainment activities and focus on recovering her mental and physical health for the time being,' the agency said.
It added that the disclosure of Hirosue's illness is not to escape accountability for her legal troubles. The agency also said: 'We will continue to sincerely cooperate with the police in all their investigations.'
Hirosue's suspension comes after a string of bad press for the star, who rose to fame in the 1990s with TV series such as Beach Boys (1997) and Sekai De Ichiban Papa Ga Suki (I Love My Dad More Than Anything In The World, 1998). She has also starred in films like the Oscar-winning Departures (2008).
Aside from the alleged assault, Hirosue was exposed in June 2023 by Japanese tabloids for an extramarital affair with Japanese chef Shusaku Toba, 46. She announced her divorce from her husband, Japanese candle artist Jun Izutsu, 51, a month later.
Hirosue and Izutsu have a son, 14, and a daughter, nine. She also has a 21-year-old son from her first marriage to Japanese designer Takahiro Okazawa, 49.
The scandal caused her then-agency Flamme, which had represented her for 25 years, to suspend her activities indefinitely. They parted ways in February 2024 and she set up her own agency R.H. – The Straits Times/Asia News Network

HK actor Will Or, 33, reveals he has stage 4 lung cancer: 'I will be OK'
Hong Kong actor Will Or, best known for his performance in the 2021 film 'Drifting', has reassured fans that he will be fine. Photo: Will Or/Instagram Hong Kong actor Will Or has revealed that he's battling stage four lung adenocarcinoma. The 33-year-old broke the news on Instagram on July 30, sharing that his symptoms began in late May with a lingering cough that didn't improve even after two rounds of antibiotics. Concerned, he consulted a respiratory specialist and underwent a CT scan, which revealed an abnormality. 'I was referred to another specialist. When the doctor saw my report, his expression changed, so I joked, 'The doctor looks so grim. Is it cancer?' 'I thought it would be tuberculosis, but after several days of further testing at the hospital, I was diagnosed with stage four lung adenocarcinoma,' he said. Or admitted that the diagnosis dealt a heavy blow, and he felt as if he were 'walking into emptiness' upon hearing the news. 'I just wanted to sleep and escape. I wanted a break, but I love my work too much. Even when it's exhausting, I enjoy giving my all,' he said. Following his discharge, Or went home to shower before heading straight to rehearsals. Despite his resolve to keep working, the Drifting (2021) star ultimately decided to take a temporary break after consulting his doctor. 'I hope I can still perform. That tiny hope, that tiny desire, those little thoughts and the little bits of support from everyone around me are what I'm holding onto,' he said. Opening up about the emotional impact of the diagnosis, Or shared that he turned to Google in search of guidance on how to cope. He then recalled a moment that helped shift his perspective – when his father, in tears, hugged him and said he wished he could take his place. 'At that moment, I felt lucky to have such a loving father. I was even more relieved that it wasn't him or someone I love who got sick. That's when I began to accept my diagnosis.' Or went on to reassure his fans, urging them not to worry or tell him to 'stay strong'. 'Living in this crazy world is already hard enough. A smile, a nod or even a strong emoji is enough... That's all I need to know you're with me,' he said. He concluded with a message of hope, writing: 'I'll be OK. Life goes on. I love you all and know I'm cherished by all of you.' Although nearly six months have passed since Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu's sudden passing, her South Korean husband Koo Jun-yup – better known as DJ Koo – is still grieving deeply. Hsu died in Japan on Feb 2 due to complications from influenza. She was 48. Since then, DJ Koo, 55, has reportedly visited her grave daily at the Chin Pao San Cemetery in Taipei, often sitting silently for hours regardless of the rain or heat. On July 27, a netizen who had offered a ride to a fan wishing to lay flowers at Hsu's grave spotted DJ Koo sitting on a foldable chair in the middle of the cemetery. When they approached the musician, he smiled and thanked them for visiting Hsu. 'He's the most devoted man I've ever seen. I hope he finds the strength to carry on… I felt sad seeing him like that. I can't imagine the pain of losing a loved one so suddenly,' the netizen said. Their post quickly went viral, with many online users moved by DJ Koo's dedication. 'When you find true love after a toxic marriage, you don't fear getting cheated on. You fear death,' one comment read.
