ALABAMA (WHNT) — News 19 and Make-A-Wish Alabama are partnering up for the Wishes Can't Wait telethon TODAY!
Phone lines open at 6 a.m. and will close at 7 p.m. To donate by phone, you can call (256) 319-1371.
More than 70 children in North Alabama are waiting for Make-A-Wish Alabama to grant their wishes.
That's why News 19 is partnering with Make-A-Wish Alabama to help fulfill these wishes, because Wishes Can't Wait!
The children who are waiting for their wishes to be granted are all living with a critical illness. Some of those children have spent most of their lives in and out of doctors' offices, hospitals and treatments.
Make-A-Wish helps those children live a life outside of their medical complications by offering them a joyful moment amidst an otherwise difficult time. Whether it's meeting a celebrity, asking for a gift, or planning the trip of a lifetime, Make-A-Wish wants to give every child their dream.
Those wishes make a big impact. Last year, Make-A-Wish surveyed over 3,000 wish alumni, wish parents and medical professionals about the impact of granted wishes. Here's what they found:
Nine out of 10 wish kids reported that the wish experience relieved them from traumatic stress
Nine out of 10 wish parents saw their child's emotional well-being improve with a wish
Nine out of 10 medical providers say a wish increased compliance with treatment
Nine out of 10 medical providers observed that the wish experience has a positive impact on a child's physical well-being and overall quality of life
Eight out of 10 wish kids reported that their wish gave them the strength to fight their critical illness.
The problem is that wishes are expensive. The average wish costs $10,000, and Make-A-Wish relies on donors to grant every single one. 245 children are waiting throughout Alabama, and 78 of them are in North Alabama. Any of those children could be your neighbors, co-workers' kids, or classmates of your own children.
Anyone can donate, including businesses! We encourage business owners in the area to consider Wishes Can't Wait as part of their philanthropy efforts.
We know our viewers have a heart for service, and you prove it over and over again.
The best part is you know your money is staying right here in the state. 100% of the proceeds go to children in our backyard, fighting these unimaginable medical battles.
We are accepting donations right now! If you'd like to donate online, you can donate here. You can also text WISHES to 44834.
Make-A-Wish Alabama has granted over 1,700 wishes since the chapter's founding in 2012.

Clear Start Tax Issues Alert: No Federal Penalty for the Uninsured, But Some States May Still Charge You

Clear Start Tax clarifies why some states still require Form 1095-A, even though the federal health coverage penalty was eliminated. Despite the federal penalty being eliminated, many taxpayers are still receiving health insurance forms, leaving them unsure whether action is required. Clear Start Tax is warning filers not to ignore Form 1095-A, especially in states that still enforce their own coverage mandates. 'The IRS eliminated the federal individual mandate penalty in 2019, but that doesn't mean everyone is off the hook,' said the Head of Client Solutions at Clear Start Tax. 'Several states still require proof of coverage, and skipping Form 1095-A or other related forms can delay your return – or worse, result in state fines.' Why You May Still Receive Form 1095-A Many taxpayers think the form is irrelevant now that the ACA penalty is gone. But Clear Start Tax explains that Form 1095-A is still issued if you enrolled in a Marketplace health plan, and it plays a key role in reconciling any premium tax credits you received. It's also used to reconcile the advance premium tax credits you received with what you actually qualified for, based on your reported income. If the numbers don't match what the IRS or your state expects, your refund could be delayed or adjusted. States That Still Enforce Health Insurance Penalties Even though the federal penalty is gone, a growing number of states have their own health coverage mandates – and their own penalties. As of 2025, these states still impose a fine if you go without qualifying coverage and don't qualify for an exemption: California Massachusetts New Jersey Rhode Island Vermont (reporting only) Washington, D.C. These states often require taxpayers to file specific health coverage forms along with their state return, and missing or inaccurate documentation can trigger state-level penalties. What to Do If You're Uninsured or Received a Marketplace Form Clear Start Tax advises taxpayers to take the following steps to avoid penalties or processing delays: Don't ignore Form 1095-A – include it with your return if applicable. Check your state's requirements if you live in one that enforces coverage mandates during the tax year. Make sure your premium tax credits were reconciled properly to avoid refund issues. File all required health coverage documentation, especially in California, where the Franchise Tax Board tracks non-compliance aggressively. 'Many people are caught off guard because they assume health insurance is no longer part of tax season,' said the Head of Client Solutions. 'But in states with mandates, missing documentation can still cost you money.' Behind on Taxes or Hit With a Penalty? Relief May Be Available Health-related penalties can overlap with broader tax issues, including unfiled returns, missed income, or existing IRS debt. Clear Start Tax helps individuals nationwide resolve complex tax situations and determine eligibility for the IRS Fresh Start Program. Know a child facing an illness? Miami's Make-A-Wish wants to help more kids

If I told you a local nonprofit was helping increase the survival rate of critically ill children, you might assume they were funding medical research. And while organizations doing that are doing noble and essential work, physical medicine isn't the only way a life can be saved. Make-A-Wish Southern Florida, based in Miami, believes — and physicians agree — that the power of a wish can help young people overcome life-threatening illnesses. It's medicine for the mind and soul at the most critical moments, when infusions of hope, strength, and joy can mean the difference between a child who keeps fighting and one who gives up. While many people see these experiences — to go somewhere, to have something, to meet someone, or to be something — as 'nice gestures' for kids in difficult circumstances, the truth is they're often a vital part of recovery. And these wishes come at no cost or obligation to the families who receive them. More can be done I'm not writing this to boast about the 15,000+ kids and families we've supported over the past 40 years — though that number is meaningful — but to make something clear: We're ready and able to do more. We recently opened the Finker-Frenkel Wish House, our new headquarters in Miami's Overtown neighborhood. The 25,000-sq.-ft. building, at 343 NW Sixth St., is five stories tall and overlooks Interstate 95 and the downtown skyline. At the heart of this facility is 'Wish Works,' an immersive, multimedia experience created by a former Disney Imagineer. It helps children discover their ideal wish by encouraging them to dream beyond their current reality — opening a world of possibilities. Because of our generous donors, strong leadership and an army of dedicated volunteers, we have never had to deny a wish due to lack of funds — and we're positioned to make sure we never do. So what do we need? Just one thing: referrals. Whether it's your child, a neighbor, a student at your child's school or someone in your extended community — we can't help if we don't know about them. Anyone with some knowledge of a child's medical condition can start the process online. While doctors often initiate referrals, parents, teachers and even the children themselves can submit one. Once a doctor confirms that the illness qualifies, the child will receive a wish — whatever that may be. (And no, the child does not need to be terminally ill, as is often mistakenly believed.) For Jackson, that meant writing, directing, and starring in his own movie. Tatiana wished for and received a mini goldendoodle puppy. Gemma got behind-the-scenes VIP access at Zoo Miami and met her favorite animals. You're Invited Knowing we played a small role in making those dreams come true has transformed our family. Now we're inviting you to be part of that magic. Referring a child takes just a few minutes. It costs nothing. And it can profoundly change a life forever. Will you join us? A short nap in the sun left me in pain for weeks

A woman is warning others not to underestimate the power of the sun after she developed such severe sunburn that it triggered shingles, leaving her face swollen, blistered and almost unrecognisable. Jean Hill, 67, had only planned to sit in her garden for a short read in the sunshine when temperatures soared into the high 20s back in May. But after dozing off for what she believes was "just 10 or 15 minutes," she woke up to what would turn out to be weeks of pain and discomfort. Despite wearing factor 30 sunscreen, the retired cleaner from Kidderminster, Worcestershire, says her face turned bright red overnight, her eye swelled shut, and she could barely recognise herself in the mirror the next morning. "It was coming up to the first May Bank Holiday and the sun came out, so I thought I'd get some fresh air," she says. "I fell asleep for a short time, but the next day I woke up and couldn't open my eye – I was in so much pain." Jean's husband, 67-year-old Timothy, was shocked to find her face bright red and badly swollen. "My face was so disfigured I could barely recognise myself," Jean remembers. "There were little white spots under my skin and it was burning." Panicked, she headed to A&E, where doctors told her she needed to see a specialist. Jean was told she'd developed severe sunburn, also known as sun poisoning, which weakened her immune system enough to trigger shingles, an infection that causes blistering, a painful rash and flu-like symptoms. Specialists examined Jean's right eye and confirmed she had developed the viral infection. While shingles itself isn't caused directly by the sun, doctors explained the severe sun damage had likely weakened her immune defences and triggered the infection. "I was given antiviral tablets, creams and eye drops, but six weeks on, I was still swollen and in pain," Jean says. "I didn't go out for weeks. I had to wear sunglasses or keep the curtains closed because the light hurt my eyes so much." Her treatment included nerve pain medication, antibiotics and moisturising creams to help soothe the blisters. Despite this, she says the pain has been relentless. "It's still really painful. The corner of my eye is the worst – I feel like banging my head against the wall." Doctors have reassured Jean that her symptoms will eventually heal, though recovery can take months. She believes the trouble began when her sunglasses slipped off her face as she napped, leaving her closed eyelids exposed to UV rays. "There are people who go out without sunglasses or a hat, lying on the beach with no sun cream," she says. "I was careful, and this still happened to me; they don't realise the danger." Older adults and young children are especially vulnerable to sunburn because their skin is thinner and more sensitive to UV rays. Children's skin burns more easily, and as we age, our skin naturally becomes thinner and loses some of its protective barrier. Jean hopes sharing her experience will encourage others to take sun safety seriously, especially as the UK is due for a hotter-than-average summer. "I never dreamt anything like this could or would happen," she says. "I don't want it to happen to anyone else." Sunburn usually causes red, hot or sore skin that feels tender. Severe sunburn can lead to swelling, blisters or peeling after a few days. You might also feel unwell with headaches or nausea. If you have severe blistering, dizziness or dehydration, or if you're worried, it's best to get medical advice. According to the NHS, symptoms usually develop in stages: A tingling, painful feeling in an area of skin (often on one side of the body) A headache or feeling generally unwell A burning or itching sensation before the rash appears A red rash that develops into fluid-filled blisters The rash most often appears on the chest and tummy, but it can also affect the face, eyes or genitals. While shingles isn't usually life-threatening, it can be very painful and sometimes leads to complications like long-lasting nerve pain or eye problems, especially if not treated promptly.
