Despite modest job growth overall, employment gains were concentrated in specific sectors:
• Healthcare: Led with 55,000 jobs added in July, driven by growth in ambulatory health care services (+34,000) and hospitals (+16,000). Over the past 12 months, healthcare employment has surged by 543,000 positions, making it the most consistent growth sector.
• Social assistance: Continued its upward trend with 18,000 new positions in July, with most gains occurring in individual and family services (+21,000).
• Federal government: Employment declined by 12,000 jobs in July and is down by 84,000 since reaching a peak in January.
Most other major industries showed little or no change in employment, reflecting cautious hiring across much of the economy. Companies still need IT support, marketing expertise and operational leadership, even as they become more selective about hiring. The work exists, but it's taking different forms that demand a more targeted approach.

The gig economy had a market size of $556.7 billion in 2024 and is expected to more than triple to $1,847 billion by 2032, the World Economic Forum reports. This trend is particularly strong in technology, where sixty-five percent of tech leaders said they're increasing their use of contract talent in the second half of 2025, according to Robert Half's 2025 Tech and IT Job Market Outlook.
This shift creates new opportunities for job seekers, though it requires weighing the trade-offs. Contract work often pays more per hour than traditional employment and provides valuable experience across different companies and industries. It also offers a pathway into organizations that might not be hiring full-time employees but still need specialized skills.
Of course, there are downsides. Contract work typically doesn't include benefits and provides less job security. However, in a market where traditional full-time opportunities are scarcer, contract work can serve as a bridge to your next permanent role or even become a preferred career path.

What's more significant is the rise in long-term unemployment. The number of people who have been looking for work for more than six months increased by 179,000 to 1.8 million, representing nearly 25% of all unemployed people. Additionally, 568,000 more people over the past year have stopped actively searching, whether due to perceived lack of opportunities or barriers like childcare constraints, skills mismatches or discouragement.
If you've been conducting a job search for several months without success, you're not alone. The key is avoiding the trap of losing hope and withdrawing from the job market entirely. This is precisely when persistence and adjustments to your approach become most important.

Jobs report shocker resets Fed interest rate cut bets originally appeared on TheStreet. The Federal Reserve hasn't had an easy job in 2025. The central bank is governed by a dual mandate to set rates at levels that encourage low unemployment and inflation—two often contradictory goals. When the Fed increases its Fed Funds Rate, it can lower inflation by slowing economic activity, which also causes job losses. When it cuts rates, economic activity picks up, reducing unemployment but increasing inflation. Most want Fed Chairman Jerome Powell to cut rates this year, but doing so may fuel inflation further, given that tariffs may already be causing it to climb. Consequently, deciding what to do with interest rates this year is particularly challenging, particularly after the latest jobs report showed serious cracks forming in the job market. Jobs data causes major shift to Fed interest rate cut chances in September The Fed watches the unemployment rate very closely because of the dual mandate. Last year, the fact that unemployment had climbed above 4% from 3.4% in 2023, while inflation retreated, allowed the Fed to cut interest rates by 1% before the year's end. This year, the Fed has remained sidelined on rates, awaiting clarity into whether unemployment or inflation first significant signs of job weakness may have emerged in July. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the US economy created only 73,000 jobs. Wall Street economists expected 100,000 jobs, which would have still marked a retreat from May, when 147,000 jobs were created. There were also significant downward revisions to jobs previously reported to have been created in June and May. "Those revisions point to just 33,000 jobs created during those two months, far less than the 272,000 previously cited," wrote portfolio manager Chris Versace on TheStreet Pro. As a result, the unemployment rate increased to 4.2% from 4.1% in May. More specifically, it climbed to 4.248%. That's concerning because it narrowly avoided being rounded to 4.3%, which would have marked the highest unemployment rate since 2021. Since unemployment was higher than expected and is potentially nearing a cycle high, the CME FedWatch tool reported that bets for a Fed interest rate cut in September improved to 87% on August 1 from 38% on July 31. The Fed risks falling behind the curve as officials disagree The Fed held interest rates unchanged at a range of 4.25% to 4.50% on July 30, but not every voting member agreed. Michelle W. Bowman, Vice Chair for Supervision, and Christopher J. Waller, a Fed Governor, dissented, favoring a quarter-percentage-point cut to rates. Additionally, absent and not voting at the meeting was Adriana D. Kugler. Bowman said in a statement released August 1 that her dissent was based upon "increasing signs of fragility" in the labor market and tame inflation. Waller echoed those sentiments in his statement, suggesting that rates are currently too restrictive, and a 3% Fed Funds Rate would be more appropriate. A hesitancy to cut rates could result in the Fed falling behind the curve, requiring it to make more extreme rate cuts in the future. These cuts could prove more dangerous to inflation than more measured cuts this year. Tariff inflation impact keeps Fed on hold Bowman and Waller's opinion isn't shared by Fed Chair Powell, who struck a hawkish tone on monetary policy during his post-decision press conference this week. The Fed's preferred inflation measure is the core Personal Consumption Expenditures Index, or PCE, which excludes volatile energy and food. PCE showed core inflation of 2.8% in June, up from 2.6% in April. Powell may also have a point regarding economic activity being in a good place, given the advance estimate placed gross domestic product, or GDP, at 3%, reversing a 0.5% contraction in the first quarter, and matching the level reported in the second quarter of 2024. Another reason supporting patience is that President Trump's pause on reciprocal tariffs ended on August 1, resulting in a slate of new tariffs that could increase inflation. The President's newly set tariffs range from 10% to 41%, including a 35% tariff on Canada. What this means for American consumers The Fed Funds Rate is the rate banks charge each other on overnight loans. If the Fed cuts rates in September, consumers should see a drop in borrowing rates, including credit card, auto loan, and mortgage rates. Mortgage rate relief would be particularly welcome, given that rising home prices and higher mortgage rates have discouraged many would-be home buyers. Banks typically set mortgage rates at 2% to 3% above the 10-year Treasury note yield. What to know if you're at risk of having your wages garnished over student loan debt
NEW YORK (AP) — Millions of student borrowers could begin having their wages garnished as soon as this summer, according to estimates from credit bureau TransUnion. The company predicts that by August roughly 3 million borrowers could move into default, meaning they're 270 days past due on payments. At that point, loan holders are at risk of having 15% of their pay docked by the government, with the money going toward the outstanding debt. There has been no clear indication of when wage garnishment will start. After the pandemic-era pause on student loan payments ended in May, borrowers have had to reassess the state of their loans and budgets. According to TransUnion, another 2 million borrowers are on course to default in September. A Biden-administration grace period, during which late or missed payments were not counted against credit scores, ended in the fall. Since then, millions of borrowers have seen hits to their credit ratings. Here's what to know: What you can do to prepare 'The most important thing borrowers can do before administrative wage garnishment restarts is to log into to check whether their federal student loans are in default and take steps now to remove them from default,' said Kyra Taylor, staff attorney at the National Consumer Law Center. Taylor said it's not uncommon for borrowers to be unaware that their loans are in default. If borrowers attended college or graduate school during different periods of time, or if they have different federal loan types, they may also have multiple student loan servicers. If that's the case, you should act now to get your loans out of default and back into good standing by either entering a rehabilitation agreement, where you must make nine consecutive payments based on their income, or by consolidating your loans into a new federal Direct Loan. 'Because this hasn't happened for so long, there are many people who have no idea they're at risk," said Aissa Canchola Bañez, policy director at the Student Borrower Protection Center. Wait times for student borrowers attempting to contact their loan servicers have been long, with many dropped calls, in part due to layoffs at the Education Department. Bañez recommends contacting your congressperson, using a casework tool that can guide you through submitting a constituent request. 'These offices have entire teams dedicated to constituent casework for when you have an issue with a federal agency, such as the Department of Education,' she said. 'So you can request assistance from your member of congress — your representative or senator.' What happens if you remain in default Until past due payments are paid or the loan's default status is resolved, borrowers are at risk of having up to 15% of their wages deducted directly from their paychecks. The Department of Education has sent notices to borrowers warning that tax refunds and wages could be withheld starting this summer if borrowers don't take steps to restart payments. The department hasn't yet provided additional information on timing. Richelle Brooks, 37, an education administrator based in Los Angeles, said she's received warnings and notices about the resumption of collection of her loans. For several degrees, she still has $239,000 in outstanding debt, and she was informed her monthly payments on those loans will be roughly $3,000. 'I can't afford it,' she said. 'We just came out of the moratorium — not paying for five years. People getting these notices — they're terrified. I'm uneasy, too." Brooks said she's an informed borrower who stays up to date on each development and who knows her options. She plans to enroll in coding classes, at least half-time, which could place her loans in deferment, so she wouldn't be required to make monthly payments, while she makes a financial plan. Some options if you fear your wages will be garnished There's still time to take action. According to Taylor, the Department of Education must provide 30 days notice before it sends a garnishment order to your employer. During that time, you can request a hearing to object by telling the department that the garnishment would cause you financial hardship. You can also request that the department reduce the amount being garnished and submit documentation about your income and expenses. To do this, you must make your hearing request in writing, postmarked no later than 30 days after the garnishment order. Your loan holder will then arrange the hearing. If you're unsure who your loan holder is, you can contact the Education Department's Default Resolution Group. If you were laid off from your last job, you can also object to garnishment if you have not been in your current job for 12 consecutive months. You can further request a hearing and object if you submitted an application for certain kinds of statutory discharges and those have not yet been decided. Some common reasons for statutory discharge of student loans include: if the school you attended closed before you could complete your degree, if your school owes you a refund but fails to pay it, if you're experiencing total disability, or if you're experiencing bankruptcy. 'If the borrower requests a hearing within 30 days after receiving the garnishment notice, the department cannot start garnishment until it issues a decision on the borrower's objections and financial hardship request,' Taylor said.
