Korea Herald5 days ago
The top security advisers of South Korea and Britain held talks Tuesday on efforts to enhance bilateral cooperation in the defense industry, trade and investment, the presidential office said.
National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac discussed these issues with his British counterpart, Jonathan Powell, in a meeting at the presidential office in Yongsan, central Seoul, the office said.
Wi expressed hope that the two countries will continue to deepen their "global strategic partnership," with Powell voicing hope for the two sides to work together to address common challenges, like supply chain bottlenecks and climate change.
The two officials also discussed ways to strengthen "substantive" cooperation in defense and the defense industry, as well as trade and investment, and agreed to make efforts to that end.
On issues related to the Korean Peninsula, they shared the view that they will work with the international community to resolve North Korea's nuclear issues and to establish lasting peace in the region.
They also discussed the war in Ukraine and other regional and global issues. (Yonhap)

Korean defense firm Hanwha Aerospace said Friday it has named Ben Hudson, the current CEO of Hanwha Defense Australia, to spearhead the company's operations in Europe and the UK. 'I am honored to join our European and UK leadership team at such a pivotal moment,' said Hudson. 'Hanwha's vision is centered on building sovereign capabilities to address today's and tomorrow's security challenges.' Lee's special envoy highlights efforts to boost ties with France

A presidential delegation visited France this week to meet with top French officials and lawmakers on behalf of President Lee Jae Myung and highlighted efforts to further enhance relations with the European country, Seoul's foreign ministry said Friday. The delegation, led by former Justice Minister Kang Kum-sil, met with Emmanuel Bonne, a diplomatic adviser to French President Emmanuel Macron, and delivered a personal letter from Lee conveying his message on strengthening bilateral relations, the ministry said in a release. Kang expressed the Lee government's strong commitment to deepening the comprehensive partnership between the two countries, especially as Seoul and Paris are set to mark the 140th anniversary of diplomatic ties next year. The delegation outlined Lee's vision of pursuing foreign policy based on pragmatism, and his government's commitment to firmly responding to North Korea's nuclear and missile threats, while seeking to reopen inter-Korean dialogue by reducing military tension and taking steps to build trust. To this end, South Korea hopes to continue working closely with France, a country that has shown consistent support for South Korea's peace policy, the delegation told the French side. The delegation also highlighted efforts to advance substantive cooperation with France in a range of fields, including strategic industries, such as space, defense, nuclear energy and artificial intelligence, as well as addressing shared global challenges like climate change. Bonne, in turn, expressed hope for the two countries to explore opportunities to elevate their bilateral relations under the Lee government, noting the importance of maintaining close communication with South Korea to promote stability and security. Bonne also reaffirmed France's strong solidarity and support for South Korea's Korean Peninsula policy, according to the ministry. The delegation met separately with Loic Herve, vice president of the French Senate, and Sabrina Sebaihi, chair of the France-Korea parliamentary friendship group, for discussions on ways to expand parliamentary exchanges between the two countries. The delegation also met with member companies of the France-Korea Business Council and discussed efforts to strengthen bilateral trade and investment. (Yonhap)

Special counsel raids Unification Church in probe into ex-first lady

Special Prosecutor Min Joong-ki's team investigating various allegations involving former first lady Kim Keon Hee on Friday raided the Unification Church's facilities and officials linked to her alleged acceptance of luxury gifts from the religious group three years ago. The team sent prosecutors and investigators to the church's international headquarters in Gapyeong, 55 kilometers northeast of Seoul, and its Seoul headquarters in the Yongsan district in the morning to secure documents and computer files related to the suspected delivery of gifts to Kim. They also searched the residences of Unification Church leader Han Hak-ja and a high-ranking church official at the center of the alleged gift scandal involving Kim. The special counsel has been investigating the allegations that Kim received a diamond necklace and an expensive bag from the high-ranking Unification Church official through a shaman between April and August of 2022, soon after Yoon Suk Yeol's election as president in March of the same year. The church official reportedly demanded some business favors from the Yoon government in return for the alleged gifts. The special counsel raided the office of the shaman, named Jeon Seong-bae, or Geon Jin, earlier this week. Jeon has said he received the gifts but lost them all. (Yonhap)
