Kota Kinabalu: This year's traditional sports competition jointly organised by Sabah Sports Board, Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry, Youth and Sports Ministry and KDCA in conjunction with the Harvest Festival celebration will be held at SMK Bahang, Penampang on May 24-25. The nine disciplines drawn up by the organising committee for the contestants are 'gusti lengan', 'tarik tali', 'melastik', 'menyumpit', 'membujak', 'menjerat kerbau', 'menghidupkan api', 'terompak gergasi' and 'rampanau'.

It is open to the public and participation is free. The winners will take home prizes in the form of cash, medals and certificates. There will also will be lucky draws for those attending the event and the main prize on the second day is a motorcycle in addition to hampers, sports items and electrical goods. More than 10 teams including some from the Peninsula and Brunei have so far confirmed their participation in the annual event aimed to promote traditional sports for future generations as well as enliven the festive spirits.

Jyothi Yarraji ruled out of 2025 season due to knee injury
New Delhi [India], July 2 (ANI): Indian hurdler Jyothi Yarraji, due to an unfortunate knee injury during a training session, has to pause her 2025 athletics season. Yarraji said she is working with her medical team to assess options and make a decision on the way forward, according to 'Due to an unfortunate injury to my knee during training a few days back, I've had to put a pause on my season,' Yarraji posted on her Instagram story on Wednesday. 'I'm working with my medical team to assess my options and make a decision on the way forward. 'Injuries are part of an athlete's journey, and I am viewing this as just another hurdle I am going to overcome soon with all your support and blessings. I will be back stronger,' she added. Former Athletics Federation of India (AFI) president Dr Adille J Sumariwalla later confirmed that the injury will require surgery and will sideline Jyothi for the entirety of the season, according to Yarraji, the national record holder in the women's 100m hurdles with a personal best timing of 12.78s, was last seen in action at the Taiwan Athletics Open last month, where she clinched a gold medal. The Indian athlete also clocked 12.96s to win gold at the Asian Athletics Championship earlier this year. Yarraji's injury also ends her bid to compete at the 2025 World Athletics Championships, which is set to take place from September 13 to 21. Yarraji won a silver medal at the Asian Games and started her 2025 season in February with a gold in the 100-meter hurdles and 200-meter run at the National Games before taking first place in the 100-meter hurdles at the Federation Cup. Malaysia athletics ends Robert Ballard's contract due to funding issues

Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia Athletics (MA) has announced that it will not extend the contract of technical director Robert Ballard, which expires on July 31. The decision comes as the national athletics body faces financial constraints, with insufficient government funding and private sponsorship. In a statement today, MA acknowledged Ballard's contributions since his return in 2023. 'Ballard has been instrumental in enhancing the performance and development of national athletes over the past two years. MA expresses its gratitude for his dedication and wishes him success in his future endeavours,' the statement read. Ballard, 60, first served as technical director in February 2014 under a two-year contract but left the association early on December 8, 2015. JCI Tanjung Aru hosts pickleball workshop

Kota Kinabalu: JCI Tanjung Aru proudly hosted an engaging pickleball workshop, 'Picklepals Day,' at PickleCollective, located in Pacific Sutera, with the aim of introducing the sport of pickleball to the local community. The event was graced by Datuk Jannie Lasimbang. The workshop featured an introduction to the sport, a demonstration session, and a series of station games designed to give participants hands-on experience and a fun, interactive way to learn pickleball.
