Kota Kinabalu: Jeffrey also expressed disappointment over Sabah being excluded from hosting a federal technical committee meeting on the state's 40 per cent revenue entitlement, which was scheduled for June 30. Despite cabinet approval and preparations to host the meeting, Jeffrey said that a crucial letter to the Prime Minister was never sent by the State Secretariat office (SKN). 'I am disappointed, because we were looking forward at least to try and get some kind of conclusion to the 40 per cent payment,' he said, adding he would seek explanations (from the State Secretary) on why the letter was not forwarded despite State Cabinet agreement. Jeffrey also spoke about the recent federal decisions regarding the Ambalat area, which he maintains falls within Sabah's territorial boundaries. 'Ambalat has been decided that that area is within our Sabah territory and if this decision was truly made without consulting Sabah, then it is not good, it is another way of bypassing the rights of Sabah,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? CM urges civil servants to maintain integrity during election year

Published on: Wednesday, July 02, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jul 02, 2025 Text Size: Hajiji chairs the Chief Minister's Department post-Cabinet meeting. Pic by CMD KOTA KINABALU: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor has urged public service personnel to uphold professionalism, neutrality and integrity in carrying out their duties during this election year. He said the role of civil servants is vital to ensure that administrative operations and public service delivery continue without disruption during the State Elections. Addressing the Chief Minister's Department post-Cabinet meeting at Menara Kinabalu on Wednesday, Hajiji said civil service efficiency during this period would reflect the government's commitment to democracy and administrative stability. He also called on Department Heads to carry out their responsibilities with stronger commitment, improved efficiency, and closer project monitoring to ensure the timely completion of approved initiatives. Delays, wastage, and damage to public trust must be avoided through proper governance and accountability, said Hajiji. He reminded civil servants to remain responsive, proactive, and to act with integrity, prioritising public interest over personal gain to meet the State Government's objectives. Separately, Hajiji announced that four bills will be tabled at the two-day State Assembly sitting beginning Monday, including two from the Chief Minister's Department – the Forestry Bill (Amendment 2025) and the Climate and Carbon Governance 2025 Bill – while the Finance Ministry will table the State Sales Tax Bill (Amendment 2025) and the Supplementary Supply Bill 2025. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? 'Integrity essential to maintain trust in civil service'

Published on: Wednesday, July 02, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jul 02, 2025 By: Sisca Humphrey Text Size: Rosli (centre) and others at the event. KOTA KINABALU: Integrity must remain central to the civil service to sustain public confidence in government institutions, said Sabah Federal Secretary Datuk Seri Rosli Isa. He said the Federal Government spends over RM17 billion annually on civil servant salaries in Sabah, underscoring the size and significance of the public sector. Rosli noted Sabah has more than 126,000 civil servants across federal and state levels, and stressed that maintaining integrity at all levels is crucial for an efficient and trusted system. He said integrity includes moral strength and ethical conduct beyond just avoiding corruption, and that civil servants should not be shielded from investigation if wrongdoing occurs. The seminar, jointly organised by Sedia and Intan Sabah, drew over 800 participants and featured sessions on governance, including one by a former offender sharing the consequences of corruption. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Trump threatens Japan with up to 35% tariff ahead of deadline

Published on: Wednesday, July 02, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jul 02, 2025 By: AFP Text Size: While Trump imposed a sweeping 10 percent tariff on imports from most trading partners in April, he unveiled -- then paused -- higher rates on dozens of economies to allow room for negotiations. - AFP pic WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump said Tuesday a trade deal with Japan was unlikely before the July 9 deadline, threatening to raise tariffs on Japanese imports to 30 or 35 percent. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump criticized Japan's reluctance to accept imports of US rice, as well as the imbalance in auto trade between the two countries. 'I'm not sure we're going to make a deal,' Trump said. 'I doubt it with Japan, they're very tough.' While Trump imposed a sweeping 10 percent tariff on imports from most trading partners in April, he unveiled -- then paused -- higher rates on dozens of economies to allow room for negotiations. This pause expires July 9, meaning the elevated rates are due to kick in next week if countries fail to reach agreements with Washington to avert them. To date, only two pacts have been announced. One was a broad framework with Britain and the other a deal to temporarily lower steep tit-for-tat duties with China. Trump said he was going to write a letter to Japan, asking them to 'pay a 30 percent, 35 percent or whatever the number is that we determine' because of the 'big trade deficit' with Tokyo. 'It's very unfair to the American people,' he said. Japan, a key US ally and its biggest investor, is subject to the same 10 percent baseline tariffs imposed on most nations plus steeper levies on cars, steel and aluminium. Ryosei Akazawa, Tokyo's trade envoy, told Japanese reporters in Washington last month that some progress had been made during a fifth round of talks with the United States. However, he added: 'We've not been able to find a point of agreement yet'. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
