Des Moines has America's best brewpub

Yahoo06-03-2025
DES MOINES, Iowa — When Whitney Selix and her husband, Scott, opened Lua Brewing Company just over five years ago, they had no idea just how wild their initial ride would be.
'We opened in November, and the pandemic shut us down in March,' she said. 'Fortunately, we'd built a good base of customers in that short time and they helped us get through.'
Five years later, Lua loyalists have stepped up again.
The Sherman Hill brewpub won USA Today's Reader's Choice Award for the best brewpub in the country.
'I was kinda shocked,' said general manager, Pete Holmgren. 'The other employees and I were voting every day but I wasn't sure we really had a chance.'
Readers Choice nominees are submitted by a group of travel writers and food critics associated with USA Today. Readers can then vote once per category per day to support their favorite nominees.
Iowa bill would prohibit vaccines unless manufacturer waives liability protections
Iowans are known to rush to online polls to support their favorites, but other 'Best Brewpub' finalists came from much larger cities like Chicago, Milwaukee, Baltimore, and Sacramento.
By definition, a brewpub serves beer it makes on the premises alongside a full menu. Lua is neither Des Moines' oldest brewpub (Court Avenue Brewing Company), nor even its largest in Sherman Hill (Big Grove). Still, it seems to have made a unique space for itself in a highly-competitive market.
'We've always just kind of marched to the beat of our own drum,' Selix said, 'and kind of done what we thought was cool and fun. It seems to be working.'
Holmgren says Lua has cycled through more than 400 beers in the last five years and has tripled the size of its initial food menu. The secret, he says, is to keep rolling with changes.
'No day is the same, you know? Two days ago it was 60 degrees and we were packed for a Hoyt Sherman show. And today we won best brewpub and we just had a blizzard and there's not a single person in here,' he laughed.
You can find Lua Brewing Company at 1525 High Street in Des Moines. You'll find the USA Today article, here.

Proposed 72-hour train route between LA, NY aims to debut in 2026

A rail company is proposing a new privately funded train route that can begin transporting people between Los Angeles and New York City in less than 72 hours as soon as next year. Delaware-based group AmeriStarRail unveiled its coast-to-coast route called the Transcontinental Chief with hopes of it being operational by May 10, 2026, ahead of the United States' 250th birthday and the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The goal date, which lands on National Train Day, is subject to operating agreements with various host railroads, the company clarified. The project has been presented to the National Railroad Passenger Corporation, also known as Amtrak. AmeriStarRail argues that a partnership between the two companies would be mutually beneficial, emphasizing that the route would be more profitable than Amtrak's existing long-distance trains. AmeriStarRail CEO Scott Spencer said Amtrak is seeking more information on the planning and coordination of the proposed system. "This is a way to confront the challenges Amtrak faces and create opportunities for them to succeed," Spencer told USA TODAY. "We're hopeful that all the parties that are involved including the host railroads recognize what a great opportunity this is for our nation." Amtrak did not respond to multiple USA TODAY requests for comment. Transcontinental Chief to replace existing bicoastal routes AmeriStarRail said the Transcontinental Chief train would replace the Southwest Chief and the Pennsylvanian Amtrak routes that currently help transport people between Southern California and New York via stops in Chicago or Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. New Yorkers will board the train from the Hoboken Terminal in New Jersey, a three-mile ride to Lower Manhattan across the Hudson River through the Holland Tunnel. AmeriStarRail clarified that it's unable to directly stop in the Big Apple due to New York Penn Station tunnel restrictions for the passenger cars Amtrak uses, known as Superliners. However, there are no boarding restrictions in Los Angeles. The route would also include a single-level train section from Harrisburg to serve people in Washington, D.C., via Philadelphia, according to AmeriStarRail. "In discussion with various interests along the route, whether that be Victorville, California; Newton, Kanas; Lebanon, Pennsylvania, they recognize the economic engine that the Transcontinental Chief will be for their communities," Spencer said. Spencer added that the Transcontinental Chief would also offer travelers on Route 66 an alternative way back from their nearly 2,500-mile drive. Bicoastal route to be 'rolling rest stop for truckers' In addition to transporting passengers, the Transcontinental Chief would also transport truck drivers and their tractor trailers between the West and East coasts within the three-day span, according to AmeriStarRail. Through a roll-on, roll-off loading system, the route would serve as a "rolling rest stop for truckers" while offering a safe alternative to parking shortages, the company states. "At RailPorts along the route, truckers will be able to drive their entire tractor trailer trucks onto railroad flatcars and then rest and relax onboard Amtrak Coach, Sleeper and Dining cars as they travel 200 - 500 miles during their federally mandated 10 hour rest period," an AmeriStarRail news release states. Intending to debut next May, Spencer said the route would start with intermediate ports available in LA and New York City, with plans to incorporate more in the future. The company aims to transport cars, vans, motorcycles, RVs and charter motorcoaches, eventually also serving the Grand Canyon and Chicago.

Women Are Inheriting Trillions. This Is A Seismic Power Shift

Alice Walton just built a novel medical school that, in addition to the traditional medical school curriculum, promises a 'whole-person approach' that is 'rooted in art & wellness.' Mackenzie Scott (formerly Bezos) quietly invested her billions in education, arts, organizations that support and serve women, public health, immigration, diversity and affordable housing, as the Chronicle of Philanthropy and Levers for Change have reported. Joan Kroc donated $200 million to NPR (in 2003). Melinda French Gates is investing her billions in helping women and social impact, 'to accelerate the pace of social progress using high-impact investments, philanthropy, partnerships, and advocacy to get more power in the hands of more people — especially women — in the U.S. and around the world,' according to her Pivotal Ventures website, She announced that 'Decades of research on economics, wellbeing, and governance make it clear that investing in women and girls benefits everyone." The rise of women's sports reflects this premise too. Women's sports is now 'a burgeoning investment category from both seasoned sports investors to newcomers,' Sports Litigation Report declared recently. Female athletes, teams and their fans have a 'values-first mindset, and prioritize brands that demonstrate integrity and social responsibility,' as my fellow Forbes contributor Claire Poole reported. 'An estimated $124tn is expected to change hands (globally) under the so-called 'great wealth transfer', with women set to inherit nearly 70% of that amount. Combined with rising educational attainment, stronger diversity and inclusion efforts, and ongoing progress in closing the gender pay gap, this moment signals a transformative rise in global female affluence.' Those are the words of Silvia Bastante de Unverhau – global philanthropy expert and Senior Advisor at LGT in Private Banker International. Citing the Bank of America Institute's report on women and wealth, CNBC said, 'About $47 trillion is expected to be passed down to women in younger generations as inherited wealth,' as a result, 'women will soon control more money than ever before.' McKinsey reports US women will have a $30 trillion opportunity by 2030. No matter what the final amount is, this is a seismic shift in the economy. If wealth is power, which it seems to be in this economy, women are about to have a lot more financial, geopolitical, economic and cultural power. Experts say this massive shift in wealth is mostly due to demographics, because baby boomers (born 1946 to 1964) and 'the silent generation' (born 1928 to 1945) will pass on their wealth. Since women tend to live longer than men, surviving wives will inherit the majority. That's 'a potential wealth transfer of such magnitude that it approaches the annual GDP of the United States. After years of playing second fiddle to men, women are poised to take center stage,' according to McKinsey.[1] It's also because women are taking center stage in the executive suites, earning more, starting and selling more companies, and investing more. McKinsey's 2024 Women in the Workplace analysis (of over 1,000 companies and 480,000 people) found that 29% of the C-suite is now women, 29% of senior management is now women, and 34% of Vice Presidents are now women, up from up from 17%, 23% and 27% in 2015, respectively. If the current economy is ruled by the Golden Rule – ye who has the most gold rules – and that's been why the ultra-rich bro boys have wielded so much power, then we are in for an economic earthquake when the wealth tables turn. It's already happening, subtly – see French Gates, Walton, Kroc and Scott's examples. Women are more educated than ever before, more accomplished than ever before, have wider networks than ever before, are more independent thinkers and more assertive leaders than ever before, are more influential than ever before, have more resources – financial and nonfinancial – than ever before, and wield more power than ever before. More women are also supporting other women more, either via who they choose to do business with, or by donating to their nonprofits or to nonprofits that serve women's needs. There are more self-made women billionaires than ever too, as Forbes reported. As French Gates said, 'Investing in women and girls benefits everyone.' 'Combined with rising educational attainment, stronger diversity and inclusion efforts, and ongoing progress in closing the gender pay gap, this moment signals a transformative rise in global female affluence,' as Unverhau put it.

Over 100 JCPenney stores sold: What happens now?

(NEXSTAR) — More than 100 JCPenney stores will soon have a new owner. Boston-based Onyx Partners, Ltd. has entered into a purchase and sale agreement with Copper Property CTL Pass Through Trust to buy 119 JCPenney properties, according to a press release. The $947 million all-cash deal is expected to close before September 8. Somewhere between $928 million and $932 million will be distributed to JCPenney's creditors, principal financial officer Larry Finger said this week, USA Today reported. Onyx Partners, JCPenney, and Copper Property did not immediately respond to Nexstar's request for additional information. However, in a statement to USA Today and other outlets, a spokesperson for JCPenney said all impacted stores will remain operational as the deal 'represents a change in landlord.' of bankruptcy by mall owners Simon Property Group and Brookfield Asset Management in December of that year. The 123-year-old retailer previously trimmed its footprint with 138 closures in 2017, according to the Associated Press. The retailer did its best to bounce back, announcing in 2023 that it would spend more than $1 billion by the end of this year to revive stores, the Associated Press reported. Planned improvements included moving checkouts to a single area, brighter lighting, fresh paint in stores, and an upgraded online shopping experience. Nonetheless, several JCPenney stores have closed since. That included more than half a dozen stores that shuttered before Memorial Day this year.
