Tesla marks India entry with first showroom
The store opened its doors in India's financial capital Mumbai to select visitors after its inauguration by Maharashtra state's chief minister Devendra Fadnavis.
The company -- which is targeting a niche but quickly growing electric vehicle market in India -- said that it was currently offering its Model Y car in India and would look to start rolling out deliveries of a cheaper variant later this quarter.
'This is the first launch of Tesla in India. It marks a huge milestone for Tesla globally,' said Isabel Fan, the company's senior regional director, adding that charging stations would be set up in Mumbai and the capital New Delhi shortly.
While the showroom will open to the general public today, curious onlookers and Tesla admirers braved Mumbai's heavy rains to catch a glimpse of the cars on display.
Tesla has for years signalled its interest in India but held back due to the country's steep tariffs on electric vehicles.
Musk, who once described India as having 'more promise than any large country', has also criticised its import duties, calling t h e m among t h e 'highest in the world'. Tesla has yet to announce plans to set up a plant in India.
India's nascent EV industry
For now, local media reports say, the company will likely sell cars imported from China.
As a result, its Model Y variants start from an on-road price of around $70,000 in India, according to its website, far higher than a US price of $37,490 after a $7,500 federal tax credit.
Tesla's India debut comes at a critical time for the company, which is seeing demand wane for its cars in countries around the world.
The recent slump in Tesla's sales partly reflects the highly competitive nature of the EV market, which the company once dominated but now also features BYD and other low-cost Chinese players.
While Tesla is looking to tap the world's third-biggest car market , experts say it is unlikely to see huge volumes in the short-term due to the nascent nature of India's EV industry and the hefty price tag of its vehicles.
India's EV market is fast-growing but remains small, with automakers reporting sales of around 100,000 vehicles in 2024 or less than three percent of total car sales.
Soumen Mandal, a senior analyst at Counterpoint, said the high price tag will likely place it out of the price range of most Indian customers and see it compete against offerings from luxury carmakers instead.
'We don't expect Tesla to play the volume game right away given the price tag,' Mandal told AFP.
'We project 500-700 units sold in initial months and then that to taper off to 200-300 (per month).'
India is currently negotiating a trade deal with the United States, including a potential reduction in tariffs on automobiles.
In February, Musk held a oneon-one meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Washington.

Ford Unveils All-Electric Bronco
TDT | Agencies The New Energy SUV model is for Chinese market The Ford Bronco, one of America's most iconic SUVs, is now going electric. Ford has officially revealed the Bronco New Energy, an electrified version of the off-roader, which will initially be available only in China. The Bronco New Energy will be offered with two powertrain options — a fully electric (EV) and an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV). Unlike the ladder-frame original, the Bronco EV adopts a larger unibody design and features battery technology supplied by BYD. This new five-seater SUV measures 5,025 mm in length, 1,960 mm in width, and 1,815 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,950 mm. Design-wise, it bears resemblance to the Bronco Sport and includes a tailgate-mounted spare tyre. The fully electric version houses a 105.4 kWh battery pack, offering a claimed range of 650 km under the CLTC cycle. It features an all-wheel-drive setup powered by dual electric motors that generate a combined output of 311 BHP and a top speed of 170 km/h. The extended-range version combines two electric motors with a 1.5-litre petrol engine producing 147 BHP. As an EREV, the engine does not drive the wheels but serves as a generator to recharge the 43.7 kWh battery or support the motors. This version can travel 220 km on electric power alone, with a total range of up to 1,220 km when factoring in the petrol engine. The Bronco New Energy will be built by Jiangling Motors Corporation (JMC), Ford's local joint venture partner in Jiangxi province. The SUV is expected to hit the Chinese market in the fourth quarter of this year.

India's Reliance profits surge on one-time gain, strong consumer show
Indian conglomerate Reliance Industries reported a jump in June quarter profits yesterday, helped by a large one-off gain and strong growth in its consumer-facing divisions. Led by Asia's richest man Mukesh Ambani, Reliance is India's most valuable company by market cap and has aggressively expanded into retail, telecoms and green energy in recent years. Net profit attributable to owners of the company came in at 269.9 billion rupees ($3.13 billion) for the April-June quarter, a 78.3% jump from the 151.3 billion rupees reported in the same period last year. These figures were boosted by a one-off gain from Reliance selling its stake in India's top paint maker Asian Paints, with the company's earnings report acknowledging a nearly 280% on-year rise in other income. But the company's bottom line still surpassed the average analyst estimate of 200.59 billion rupees, a performance aided by the conglomerate's retail and telecom units. Revenue from operations for Reliance meanwhile came in at 2.48 trillion rupees, a 5.27% year-on-year increase. Despite an aggressive expansion into retail, telecoms and green energy, the firm still relies heavily on its traditional oil business to make money. Its core oil-to-chemicals division struggled for most of 2024 as global uncertainty upset the industry's supply-demand dynamics, with the division continuing to battle lingering weakness. Chairman Ambani acknowledged in a statement that energy markets encountered 'heightened uncertainty' during the quarter. The conglomerate's earnings report noted that revenue for the oil-to-chemicals division was down due to 'a fall in crude oil prices' and a planned shutdown. Reliance's retail and telecom arms, however, remained bright spots. Gross revenue from its retail business was up 11.3% to 841.7 billion rupees despite the early onset of monsoon rains which hurt sales of air-conditioners. Meanwhile, the telecom unit's average revenue per user, a key metric of topline growth, rose nearly 15% yearon-year to hit 208.8 rupees on the back of strong data consumption and tariff hikes. Reliance Industries shares closed flat in Mumbai ahead of the earnings announcement on Friday.

EU unveils blueprint for boosted 2-trillioneuro budget
The EU executive proposed yesterday a long-term budget boosted to two trillion euros ($2.3 trillion) as Europe confronts complex challenges, from overseas competition to Russian aggression at its borders. Presenting the 2028-2034 budget blueprint to reporters in Brussels, EU chief Ursula von der Leyen said it 'will be the most ambitious ever proposed. It is more strategic, more flexible, more transparent'. In drawing up the plans, von der Leyen had to balance bolstering the bloc's security, ramping up Europe's competitiveness to keep up with US and Chinese rivals, countering climate change and paying debts due from 2028. And all of this was against a backdrop of soaring trade tensions with the European Union's biggest commercial partner, the United States. The European Commission announced a 451-billion-euro competitiveness fund to support the EU's investment efforts in clean tech, digital, defence and food security and innovation. As Europe pushes to rearm, the amounts dedicated to defence and space will increase five-fold -- to 131 billion euros. And the spending plan proposed earmarking up to 100 billion euros to support war-torn Ukraine over its seven-year period. 'This is a long-term commitment to Ukraine's recovery and reconstruction,' budget chief Piotr Serafin said. Hungary, Russia's closest ally in Europe, slammed the money for Kyiv. 'Ukraine would get a massive funding boost, while European farmers lose out,' Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said before the official announcement by the commission. The large farming subsidies that make up the biggest share of the budget, known as the common agricultural policy (CAP), are a subject of fierce debate. Serafin, however, said that under the commission's plans, 300 billion euros would be ring-fenced to support farmers, who have been worried about potential cuts to their slice of the pie. In the current seven-year budget, the CAP accounted for almost a third of funding -- around 387 billion euros, of which 270 billion euros are directly paid to farmers.
