Ruckus in Parliament as Oppn seeks answers from govt on Pahalgam attackers & Trump ‘brokering peace'
In the Rajya Sabha, Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge said US President Donald Trump's claims of mediating the India-Pakistan ceasefire in the immediate aftermath of Operation Sindoor were 'humiliating' for the country. Kharge also sought clarification on why terrorists involved in the 22 April Pahalgam terror attack had not been captured yet.
New Delhi: The Monsoon Session of Parliament began on a fiery note Monday, with the Opposition launching a two-front attack on the BJP-led NDA government.
As soon as both Houses assembled on the first day of the session, Opposition MPs stormed the well, demanding answers from the Narendra Modi-led government on various issues and seeking a discussion on Operation Sindoor.
Lok Sabha was adjourned thrice and the Rajya Sabha once amid the ruckus.
Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar informed the House that he had admitted a notice from BJP MP Samik Bhattacharya to discuss Operation Sindoor. The date and time will be discussed with other leaders at the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting.
He said many members have given notices seeking adjournment of proceedings under Rule 267 to discuss Operation Sindoor, but they had not been accepted. However, he allowed Kharge to speak on the matter. Attacking the government on Pahalgam, Kharge questioned why none of the terrorists behind it had been captured or killed since the 22 April attack.
'Why have the Pahalgam terrorists not been neutralised or captured after so many days and why has the American president been claiming that he has brokered peace during Operation Sindoor?' Kharge asked.
'We have supported the government unconditionally without asking any questions, only to support national interest and the army. But the government has not answered the House. The J&K L-G has admitted intelligence failure in Pahalgam and even their CDS and a defence attaché have made several sensitive revelations. We want to know,' he added.
'The American president has claimed 24 times that he has brokered peace between the two countries. How come an outsider can make such a claim? This is an insult to the nations. Why has the government compromised with the respect of the country?' he remarked.
The Leader of the House, J.P. Nadda, said the government was ready to discuss both issues. 'There should be no message conveyed that the House is not ready to discuss Operation Sindoor. This is the biggest achievement after Independence,' he said.
The Union minister added that nothing would go on record except what he had said.

Opposition protests in Lok Sabha
In the Lok Sabha too, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju expressed the government's willingness to discuss the issue. He said the government was ready for discussion under the BAC and the BAC meeting would decide the agenda to be discussed.
At the BAC meeting, 16 hours have been allotted to the Lok Sabha for discussion and nine hours to the Rajya Sabha. The discussion may take place next week. 'The government is ready for discussion, but they (Opposition MPs) are protesting here. It is not right to protest like this on the first day of the Monsoon session,' he said.
The House moved into an unscheduled adjournment following protests by Opposition MPs seeking Modi's clarification on foreign policy developments in the immediate aftermath of Operation Sindoor.
Speaker Om Birla made an unsuccessful appeal to the protesting members seeking that the House be allowed to function according to procedure. He also took exception to the use of placards in the well of the House. But agitating members did not budge.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also rose to pacify members, saying the government was ready to discuss Operation Sindoor. But Rahul Gandhi, speaking to reporters outside Parliament, said he was not allowed to speak in the House. 'The defence minister was allowed to speak on the issue and other government members were allowed,' he said.
Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi supported Rahul's charge, questioning why the Leader of the Opposition wasn't allowed to speak in the Lok Sabha.
While the first day of the session opened on a stormy note, BJP sources told ThePrint that the government's strategy is to celebrate Operation Sindoor as 'Vijay Utsav' as indicated by the Prime Minister's comments ahead of the session.
Modi, speaking to the media before the start of the session, hailed Operation Sindoor as a 'Vijay Utsav' (victory celebration) for the nation.
'This Monsoon Session is a 'Vijay Utsav',' Modi said. 'The entire world has witnessed the strength of the Indian armed forces. The objective set for Operation Sindoor was achieved with 100 percent success. In just 22 minutes, our forces neutralised terrorists in their own hideouts.'
Although the government has already announced that it is ready for discussion on the cross-border strikes in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, Congress sources said the Opposition wants to corner the government on the issue of Trump's alleged intervention.
It wants the Prime Minister to be present during the discussion, knowing Modi is scheduled to visit the Maldives and the UK this week. The government is yet to respond on whether Modi will be available when Operation Sindoor is discussed in the House.

Rahul questions PM Modi's silence on Trump's repeated ceasefire claims
New Delhi, July 23 (UNI) Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha (LoP) Rahul Gandhi today again hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, questioning his silence over US President Donald Trump's repeated assertions of brokering a ceasefire deal between India and Pakistan. Speaking to the media in the Parliament House complex, Gandhi raised concerns about the government's foreign policy, national security, and the handling of Operation Sindoor. 'What statement will Prime Minister Modi give… that Trump brokered the ceasefire? He can't say that. But the truth is — Trump did broker the ceasefire, and the whole world knows it,' Gandhi said. He pointed out that Donald Trump has claimed on at least 25 occasions that he was instrumental in brokering the ceasefire deal. 'Who is Trump to broker a ceasefire? That's not his job. Yet Prime Minister Modi hasn't responded even once. This is the truth, and you can't run away from it,' he said while slamming the Modi government for refusing to rebut Trump's statements. Accusing the Modi government of evading critical national issues, the Rae Bareli MP said, 'There are many pressing issues that we want to discuss — from national defence and the defence industry to Operation Sindoor. Those who call themselves patriots have disappeared. The Prime Minister has not made a single public statement'. 'On one hand, the government says Operation Sindoor is ongoing. On the other, it is celebrating victory. And meanwhile, Trump keeps saying he got the ceasefire done. Clearly, something is fishy,' he said. Alleging that India's foreign policy has weakened under the Modi government, Gandhi claimed, 'Not a single country has come forward in our support. The Modi government has torn apart our foreign policy'. UNI RBE AAB

JACKPOT for India as country has 8.52 million tonnes reserves of rare earth elements, they are located in these cities, names are... India has about 7.23 million tonnes of Rare Earth Oxide (REO), found in around 13.15 million tonnes of monazite, a mineral that contains both thorium and rare earths. These are mainly located in beach sands, red and teri sands, and inland river areas across several states like Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. Apart from this, another 1.29 million tonnes of rare earths are present in hard rock areas of Gujarat and Rajasthan. This information was shared in the Lok Sabha by Minister of State Dr. Jitendra Singh. He mentioned that the Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMD), which works under the Department of Atomic Energy, is actively searching for more rare earth minerals across the country. Their work includes exploring coastal areas, river sands, and hard rock regions where these minerals are likely to be found. Discovery of 482.6 million tonnes of rare earth ore Jitendra Singh also revealed that the Geological Survey of India (GSI) has found about 482.6 million tonnes of rare earth ore through 34 different exploration projects across various parts of the country. He also mentioned that in the last 10 years, India has exported just 18 tonnes of rare earth minerals and hasn't imported any during this time. To address the challenges caused by export bans on rare earth magnets by certain countries, Singh said that the Ministry of External Affairs is actively working with other nations and international partners. India is continuing discussions at both bilateral (one-on-one) and multilateral (involving multiple countries) levels to boost cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy, including rare earth minerals and related technologies. These efforts are aimed at keeping supply chains stable and protecting the interests of Indian businesses that rely on these materials. The Ministry of Mines is taking major steps to ensure that India has a stable and secure supply of key minerals, especially Rare Earth Elements. These minerals play a crucial role in producing electric vehicles, clean energy technologies like solar panels and wind turbines, and essential defence systems. To meet this need, the Indian government is forming strong ties with countries that have rich reserves of these minerals. Minerals such as lithium, cobalt, graphite, titanium, and rare earths are in high demand because they are vital to many fast-growing industries. To support these sectors and keep the supply chain strong, the Ministry has also brought in several important policy changes and reforms.

Polls being 'stolen'; will bring out 'vote theft' in black and white with Karnataka example: Rahul
Amid the raging row over revision of electoral rolls in Bihar, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday (July 23, 2025) alleged that elections are being "stolen" in India and claimed that his party has figured out the modus operandi of the "vote theft" by studying a Lok Sabha constituency in Karnataka. Mr. Gandhi said he would put before the people and the Election Commission in black in white on how the "theft of votes" is being done. His remarks came after it emerged that during house-to-house visits in the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll in Bihar, poll officials have so far found that more than 52 lakh voters were not present at their addresses, and another 18 lakh have died. "It is not just about 52 lakhs. It is not just about Bihar, they cheated in Maharashtra. We have asked questions of the Election Commission, asked them to show us the voters list, but they did not show us the voters list. We asked for videography, they changed the law. One crore new voters had come in Maharashtra, and the election was stolen," Mr. Gandhi told reporters in Parliament House complex. 'In Karnataka, we have found out 'bhayankar chori' (massive theft). I will show it in black and white to you and the Election Commission. I will show in black and white how the 'chori' is done and from where. We have it in black and white in Karnataka,' the former Congress president said. Also Read | Congress draws parallels between the NRC, and the SIR in Bihar "They know that we have understood their game. We picked one constituency and did a deep dive. Problem is that they give a voters list on paper and paper list cannot be analysed. We took the full voters list of one constituency, we put it on digital format, it took six months but we have uncovered their whole system, how they do it, who votes and from where new voters are brought," Mr. Gandhi said. He said the Election Commission has understood this and has brought in a new system in Bihar which is that to delete voters. "In India elections are being stolen that is the reality of India," Mr. Gandhi alleged. Sharing a video of his remarks on X, Mr. Gandhi said, "We showed everyone how match-fixing happened in Maharashtra. We investigated one Lok Sabha seat in Karnataka - large-scale votes theft was found, we will soon bring it before the public." In Bihar, votes of SC, ST, OBC, and minority brothers and sisters are being stolen in the name of SIR , he claimed. "We will not sit quietly. The INDIA bloc will fight the battle for people's rights from Parliament to the streets," Mr. Gandhi said. The Opposition has been protesting in both houses of Parliament against the SIR, alleging that the EC's exercise was aimed at disenfranchising voters in Bihar ahead of the Assembly elections.
