Asean to deepen global partnerships in face of economic challenges
KUALA LUMPUR : Amid escalating global trade tensions and a volatile international economic landscape, Asean leaders today reaffirmed their strong commitment to expanding and upgrading their Asean+1 free trade agreements (FTAs) and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (RCEP).
This pledge, made during the 46th Asean Summit held here today, underscores the bloc's determination to navigate external challenges through strengthened partnerships.
Chief among these challenges is the prospect of punitive tariffs ranging from 10-46% imposed by the bloc's second-largest trading partner, the US, on April 3.
In a joint statement, the Asean leaders described unilateral and retaliatory trade actions as 'counterproductive and risk exacerbating global economic fragmentation, especially when these actions create indirect impacts on Asean'.
The member states also pledged to deepen cooperation with existing external partners and are actively seeking new and emerging partnerships, including region-to-region linkages such as with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and China through its tripartite summit, which convened for the first time earlier today.
These efforts are seen as reinforcing Asean's resilience, expanding economic opportunities, and solidifying its position as a dynamic global trade and investment hub.
Beyond external partnerships, Asean also committed to strengthening its internal resilience through deeper intra-regional trade and investment. This includes accelerating key initiatives in its Digital Economy Framework Agreement and the upgrade of the Asean Trade in Goods Agreement.
The bloc expressed confidence that this would enhance regional integration, boost business certainty and competitiveness, and ensure Asean remained cohesive and adaptable to emerging challenges.
Domestically, Asean member states will also take individualised steps to mitigate the impact of high tariffs, including safeguards to support regional industries vulnerable to trade disruptions.
Speaking at a press conference following the conclusion of the 46th Asean Summit today, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim emphasised the importance of protecting the interests of approximately 660 million people across the region.
'On (the US) tariffs, while proceeding with bilateral negotiations, the consensus was that there should be some form of understanding within Asean, and that any decision should not come at the expense of other countries,' he said.

(Wikipedia pic) PETALING JAYA : Justice Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh has been appointed as Malaysia's new chief justice, taking over the post from Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat who retired earlier this month. In a statement, the office of the chief registrar said the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had also consented to Abu Bakar Jais's appointment as president of the Court of Appeal and Azizah Nawawi's appointment as Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak. They will be sworn in and presented their letters of appointment at Istana Negara on July 28. The statement said the Yang di-Pertuan Agong consented to the appointments on the advice of the prime minister and after consultation with the Conference of Rulers, which is in line with Article 122B of the Federal Constitution. Chief Judge of Malaya Hasnah Hashim is currently serving as acting chief justice following the retirement of Tengku Maimun, while Federal Court judge Zabariah Yusof is acting Court of Appeal president after Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim retired two weeks ago. Wan Ahmad Farid, a Court of Appeal judge, has also been elevated to the Federal Court to allow him to helm the highest office in the judiciary. He was appointed as a judicial commissioner in December 2015 before being elevated to the High Court in 2019 and then the Court of Appeal in November 2024. Wan Ahmad Farid served as the political secretary to former prime minister, the late Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, and was an Umno member. However, he quit politics in 2013. The 62-year-old had also served as a deputy home minister for just over a year, between 2008 and 2009, and was a senator from 2005-2009. In 2009, Wan Ahmad Farid was the Barisan Nasional candidate in the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary by-election but lost to PAS's Abdul Wahid Endut. Abu Bakar, 63, started his career in the Attorney-General's Chambers before going into private practice. He was appointed judicial commissioner in 2013 and elevated as High Court Judge three years later. Abu Bakar was promoted to the Court of Appeal in December 2019 and to the Federal Court in June 2023. Azizah is the first woman to be appointed Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak. She will replace Abdul Rahman Sebli, who is set to retire on July 24. Azizah has served at the Court of Appeal since August 2019. She was made judicial commissioner in November 2012 and elevated to the High Court in September 2014.

Umno division chiefs ask AG to drop appeal against Najib's house arrest bid
Some of the 145 Umno division chiefs who had gathered at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur tonight. KUALA LUMPUR : Umno division chiefs have called on Attorney-General Dusuki Mokhtar to drop his appeal against a Court of Appeal decision allowing former Umno president Najib Razak to initiate a judicial review related to a royal addendum allowing him to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest. The AG is appealing to set aside a majority 2-1 ruling on Jan 6 that allowed the former prime minister's application to adduce additional evidence and order the High Court to hear his judicial review. In a statement, they said that as the principal legal adviser to the government, the AG should 'uphold' the royal addendum and 'support justice'. The statement was issued on behalf of 160 Umno division chiefs, 145 of whom gathered at a hotel here tonight. They also proposed that all 191 Umno divisions nationwide that have yet to hold their conferences include a special motion on the addendum during their respective meetings. 'This motion is crucial as a show of party unity and solidarity in defending the institution of Malay rulers and upholding the principle of justice for all,' they said. The division chiefs also called on Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to implement the addendum. The Federal Court was told last Wednesday that AG Dusuki Mokhtar had acknowledged the existence of the addendum but was disputing whether it was genuine or valid. Najib wants the government to implement the order, dated Jan 29 last year, allowing him to serve the remainder of his jail sentence in the SRC International case under house arrest. The former prime minister learnt about the addendum soon after the Federal Territories Pardons Board announced in early February last year that his 12-year jail term in connection with the SRC International case had been halved and his RM210 million fine reduced to RM50 million.

3-nation military exercise in Perak

(Bernama pic) KUALA LUMPUR : The Malaysian army will carry out the Keris Strike 2025 exercise at several locations in Perak in collaboration with the US and Australian armies over 14 days from next Thursday. A statement by the Malaysian army said the exercise will take place in areas covering Ipoh, Sungai Siput, Kuala Kangsar and Lenggong. Held annually, the exercise aims at strengthening joint operational capabilities and deepening military ties with partner nations. 'It also enhances the Malaysian army's preparedness in responding to regional security threats,' the statement read. It advised residents, particularly those in Ipoh and Kuala Kangsar, not be alarmed by the presence of foreign troops, movement of military vehicles and convoys or other military activities during the period.
