‘My Parents' Car Runs Like New...': Man Slams Delhi's ‘Absurd' Policy On Old Vehicles

Last Updated: Delhi bans refuelling of end-of-life vehicles to combat pollution. Diesel vehicles over 10 years and petrol vehicles over 15 years are affected. In a major step to tackle rising pollution levels in the national capital, the Delhi government has enforced a ban on refuelling end-of-life vehicles (EoLVs). As per the new policy, diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years will no longer be allowed to refuel at any petrol pumps in the city, regardless of their registration status. The rule came into effect on July 1. This move has left several vehicle owners frustrated, especially those with well-maintained cars now deemed unfit for Delhi's roads. Many residents have been forced to sell their vehicles at throwaway prices, despite them being in excellent running condition. The decision has triggered criticism on social media, where users are calling the blanket rule unfair and impractical. One Delhi resident voiced her frustration on X, writing, 'My parents' car is 15 years old, barely driven 20,000 km, still runs like new. Engine untouched, PUC perfect. Yet it must be scrapped under the government's absurd policy." Furthermore, the user called out the Government for keeping the middle class under loans. 'After looting 30–40 per cent taxes, they will now seize your car at petrol pumps. Just to keep the middle class under loans forever," the post concluded. My parent's car is 15 years old, barely 20k km driven, still runs like untouched, PUC perfect. Yet it must be scrapped under govt absurd policy. After looting 30–40% taxes, they will now seize your car at petrol pumps. Just to keep middle class under loans forever! — Anuradha Tiwari (@talk2anuradha) July 1, 2025 The post generated a wave of reactions from several users, many called out the policy and others came out in support. An X user commented, 'Government cannot give a special permit for you. It's a uniform policy. And has to be followed by everyone. If a 15-year-old car has run only 20000 km; it's not the fault of the government. They cannot make rules according to the wishes of every person singularly." Another one commented, 'The rule only exists in Delhi. You can drive/sell that car outside Delhi and should not have any problem." One of them shared, 'Delhi voted for them; why cry now?" A person shared, 'No point complaining on social media. Please approach the courts." 'It's a debt trap; people should stop owning cars and hire one when in need. Let the car manufacturing companies that fund such legislation to political parties realise," wrote a person. Another comment reads, '15 years and 20k KM means you don't require a car, I assume you purchased for status sake. If you cannot use the car, at least you should have sold it to another middle-class person to utilise it properly." In a similar case, a Delhi Man recently shared that he had to sell his cherished Mercedes-Benz ML350, which he purchased for Rs 84 lakh in 2015, for just Rs 2.5 lakh due to the new policy. Govt allows cab aggregators to charge twice base fare during peak hours

New Delhi, July 2 (UNI) The government has permitted cab aggregators to implement a maximum dynamic pricing rate of up to twice the base fare during peak hours. According to the Motor Vehicles Aggregator Guidelines 2025 issued yesterday, aggregators are also required to charge at least 50 per cent less than the base fare during non-peak hours. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has directed the state governments to adopt these revised guidelines within three months from the date of issue. The guidelines further specify that "the fare notified by the state government for the respective category or class of motor vehicles shall be the base fare chargeable to passengers availing services from the aggregator." Additionally, the base fare should cover a minimum of three kilometers to account for dead mileage — this includes the distance traveled without a passenger and the distance and fuel used to pick up the passenger(s). As per the revised guidelines, the driver, along with the motor vehicle, onboarded with the aggregator, is entitled to receive a minimum of 80% of the applicable fare, including all costs under the driver's fare. The remaining portion may be retained by the aggregator as the apportioned fare. 'No passenger shall be charged for dead mileage except when the distance for availing the ride is less than three kilometres and the fare shall be charged only from the point of origin of the journey to the point of destination where the passenger is dropped off,' the guidelines said. Moreover, if a driver cancels a booking after accepting a ride on the app, a penalty of 10 percent of the fare, not exceeding Rs 100, will be imposed if the cancellation is made without a valid reason, as defined by the aggregator and clearly mentioned on its website and app. If a passenger cancels a booking after confirming the journey on App, a cancellation fee of 10 percent of the fare, not exceeding Rs 100, will be collected. This fee applies if the cancellation is made without a valid reason, as outlined by the aggregator on its website and app. The cancellation fee will be divided between the driver and the aggregator.
