Cannes 2025: Peacock Royale — South Indian couture takes flight at the prestigious film festival
The centrepiece of the collection was an extraordinary peacock-green lehenga saree — a striking fusion of South Indian craftsmanship and contemporary glamour — worn by British Indian singer and actress Rachanaa Jain. Featuring a dramatic six-metre saree train made from ethically sourced peacock feathers, the look paid tribute to divine femininity and cultural legacy.
The ensemble was a feat of artisan brilliance, including:
● 240 hours of handwoven Kanchivaram silk
● 250 hours of intricate Aari embroidery with peacock motifs
● 150 hours of precision feather artistry
● Antique temple jewellery engraved with goddess icons
'I didn't want to make just a dress,' Smrutha shares.
'I wanted to tell a story — one that honours our roots and envisions our future.'
The second ensemble, a purple Indo-Western skirt and frilled top embellished with crystals, offered a modern silhouette while retaining Indian aesthetics, showcasing her ability to innovate across design boundaries.
Beyond the red carpet, her impact is growing in cinema. She is the lead costume designer for Rachanaa Jain's upcoming film,
Bling Power
, further expanding her influence on global style narratives.

For her own Cannes appearance, Smrutha wore a modern-draped Kanchivaram Ahimsa silk saree, blending sustainability, heritage, and empowerment in one bold statement.
But her mission extends beyond couture. She actively collaborates with women artisans, ensuring not just fair income but a sense of dignity and purpose. Through her personal styling services, she empowers clients to express individuality with confidence and cultural pride.
This isn't just a nod to South Indian culture — it's South Indian culture leading the global story.

Viral Video Claims To Show "Cleanest Indian Street Food", Internet Does Not Agree
The allure of street food lies in its unapologetic flavours, vibrant colours and the infectious energy of the streets themselves. Indian street food, in particular, is renowned for its bold spices, tantalising aromas and the unbridled passion of its vendors. However, amidst the chaos of crowded streets and sizzling grills, a question often lingers: cleanliness. A recent video claiming to showcase the "cleanest" Indian street food has gone viral on social media, sparking a heated debate online. The video, shared on X (formerly Twitter), shows a street food vendor making a rose-syrup drink. Also Read: Cold Drink In Omelette? "Courage Has No Age": Woman Completes 10,000-Foot Skydive On 80th Birthday
An eighty-year-old woman has become the oldest Indian woman to complete a tandem skydive. Dr Shraddha Chauhan, mother of Retired Brigadier Saurabh Singh Shekhawat, jumped from a height of 10,000 feet on her 80th birthday to make it to the record books. Despite battling vertigo, cervical spondylitis and spinal disc issues, Dr Chauhan took the plunge at Skyhigh India, at Narnaul Airstrip in Haryana, two hours from Delhi. It is the country's only certified civilian drop zone. In a video shared by Skyhigh India's official Instagram, Dr Chauhan is seen preparing for her jump with the support of her son, one of India's most decorated Army officers. "She is my mother. Turning 80 years, and today, I have the good fortune and honour of jumping with her," he says in the clip. "Happy Birthday," he said, as his mother planted a kiss on his cheek. The 80-year-old said, "The desire I had in my heart, to fly in the sky like an aeroplane, today my son has fulfilled that wish. It's a very proud moment". The video shows the brigadier helping his mother stretch and warm up before the flight. Onboard the aircraft, he assists her with the gear, and moments later, the duo free-falls into the blue. A GoPro camera captured the wind whipping against their faces and the breathtaking fall. As her feet touched the ground, Dr Chauhan made history. Many came to congratulate her and wish her a happy birthday. The caption read, "She is now the oldest Indian woman to do a tandem skydive - and the oldest to do so within India. A mother. A milestone. A moment that soared. Courage knows no age. Love has no altitude." View this post on Instagram A post shared by Skyhigh (@skyhighindia)
