How Albion's academy put Callum back on track
And the emerging defender might not be the only family member worth keeping an eye on.
Mackley played the second half of the friendly win over Las Palmas in Marbella.
He took the left-back role that night as Pervis Estupinan prepared for his move to Milan.
But the 18-year-old can play anywhere across the back line, as he has shown for the under-21s.
He also helped the 21s to a positive trip to Spain which included a 1-1 draw against Spanish second-tier side Cadiz.
Mackley comes from Portsmouth and thanks his parents for their support, which included a fair few miles up and down the A27.
He said: 'I have been at Brighton since I was 12 and I was at Southampton since the age of seven so that's a lot of driving and miles for my dad to cover.
'As well as my siblings who play football as well so him putting in that time and effort for me is really helpful.'
Mackley made a big move along the coast which, by coincidence, mirrored that of fellow defender Ben White during his academy years.
He said: 'When I was at Southampton with my brother, it came to the end of under-12s and I just wasn't enjoying it that much.
'Just the environment I was in.
'It was quite a hard decision for me and my family to decide to leave.
'Then when Brighton came in and asked about me, I went and had a look around and felt Brighton was the place for me.
'From all the staff, the education, the building.
'Just the feeling of the club was really attractive to me and since I have been here it has been the best.
'I am forever grateful for all the hard work the staff put in.
'There are too many people to mention – too many top coaches, all the way through the academy.
'I am just very grateful for their hard work and efforts, for giving me opportunities and trusting me and it has paid off.'
Mackley highlighted the fact he was one of four players taken across from the 21s to the seniors in Spain.
But the other three – Andrew Moran, Malick Yalcouye and new goalkeeper Nils Ramming – are experienced by comparison.
Mackley is among the youngsters who has taken part in senior training sessions under Fabian Hurzeler's tenure.
That meant he was comfortable stepping into a first-team environment which includes some big names and, in James Milner, a player who made his Prem debut four years before Mackley was born.
He added: 'The manager Fabian likes to bring young lads in and train with the first team.
'I feel like that is what Brighton as a club are good at.
'Sometimes I am involved in a session and I feel like it is a good environment for me to gain experience and learn and be around the lads so, when opportunities like that come along, it is not a surprise.
'It is more a comfortable transition.
'I see first team players around the building every day.
'We all know each other and it is a nice atmosphere.'
That atmosphere could be heard as non-playing squad members watched the Las Palmas game.

Mackley said: 'Especially the older lads, Dunky, Welbeck encouraging me on.
'Even lads on the pitch, James (Milner) and (Eiran) Cashin. It's nice to hear and pushes me on.'
Mackley made sure close family were able to follow his performance against Las Palmas and was on the phone afterwards to his footballing family.
He said: 'My little brother is currently on trial at Bournemouth.
'My older brother used to play.
'And then my youngest brother just plays Sunday League but he is a cracking little player!'

'Lawal looked like Beckham'
Stoke City manager Mark Robins said Bosun Lawal could feature in a number of positions during the upcoming Championship campaign after an injury-hit debut season with the side. The Irishman joined the Potters in August 2024 but was sidelined for much of the season with a back injury, playing just seven Championship games. But the versatile Lawal, who can play in defence or midfield, is keen to make a bigger impact this campaign and his performances in pre-season are certainly catching the eye of his boss. "There's bits and pieces where [Lawal] looks fantastic at times," Robins told BBC Radio Stoke following the 1-1 friendly draw with Premier League side Wolves on Saturday. "His feet are brilliant. He looked like [David] Beckham, coming out with the ball as well. "He can play anywhere with the feet that he's got. They are quite soft and he's got a really good touch. He can finish, as you saw on Wednesday evening [when he scored in the 2-1 victory over Crewe Alexandra]. "He's worked his socks off this pre-season and gives himself every chance. His build and his qualities make him a welcome addition to the squad." Listen to the full post-match interview with Mark Robins and more on BBC Sounds.

England's Euro-winning squad return home for more celebrations
England's victorious European championship squad is due to return to Britain on Monday to continue celebrations at the London residence of the British prime minister and along the streets of central London. Soon after their flight from Switzerland touches down on Monday afternoon, the players and coaches will be taken to a reception at 10 Downing Street hosted by Angela Rayner, the Deputy Prime Minister, and Stephanie Peacock, the Sports Minister. On Tuesday afternoon, they will travel along The Mall in central London in an open-top bus and soak up the plaudits from fans at the Queen Victoria Memorial in front of Buckingham Palace. "I'm very much looking forward to it all," said England head coach Sarina Wiegman on Sunday night after her side had overcome world champions Spain 3-1 in a penalty shoot-out. During the final at the St Jakob Park in Basel, Spain took the lead midway through the first-half through Mariona Caldentey. Just before the hour mark, Alessia Russo levelled for England. Though Spain dominated possession, they were unable to penetrate England's rear guard. Neither side was able to find the winner in 30 minutes of extra- time. During the shoot-out, England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton saved two kicks and after Salma Paralluelo missed Spain's fourth shot, Chloe Kelly stepped up and thrashed the ball high to the right of the Spain goalkeeper Cata Coll to launch the partying. "I'm so incredibly proud of the team and the staff," said Wiegman following England's third comeback win of the knockout stages. "This is the most chaotic and ridiculous tournament we have played," added the 55-year-old Dutchwoman. "In the quarter-final, semi-final and final we've come from behind. Of course, we have players with talent but the belief is incredible. They believe they can win by any means. We just never ever give up." Return Just over three weeks after losing their opening game of the tournament against France, Sunday night's triumph allowed England to become the first nation to secure back-to-back titles since Germany claimed six on the trot between 1995 and 2013. The success also enabled Wiegman to emulate the Germans Tina Theune and Gero Bisanz as the only coaches to have steered a squad to glory on three occasions. In 2017, Wiegman led the Netherlands to the crown with a 4-2 win over Denmark. In 2022, in a competition delayed to the coronavirus pandemic, she guided England to their first title at the expense of Germany. And three years later, she navigated her outfit past a Spain side that had won all of its games and featured the two-time Ballon D'Or winners Aitana Bonmati and Alexia Putellas. Bonmati, whose spot kick was saved in the shoot-out, said: "I think that in terms of football we have been the team that has played the best football in the tournament. "We are the players or the team that has the most talent, the one that is the most enjoyable to watch. But sometimes that's not enough." Spain head coach Montse Tomé echoed her star midfielder. "But hey, football is a sport where sometimes the best team doesn't always win," she added. "England is a great team and played well throughout the tournament, demonstrating a high level of competitiveness. "In the end, a penalty kick is something anyone can score, and anyone can miss."

Wales defender Woodham signs for Liverpool
Wales defender Lily Woodham has joined Liverpool following her departure from Seattle Reign. Woodham, who started all Wales' games at Euro 2025, left Reign over the weekend having joined the National Women's Soccer League club in 2024. The 24-year-old left-back spent most of the 2024-25 season on loan at Crystal Palace, making 20 appearances in the Women's Super League. Woodham returns to the English top flight on a permanent basis after joining a Reds side who finished seventh last season. "I'm a fan of Liverpool so it's a dream come true really," Woodham told the Merseyside club's website. "I'm really excited to meet everyone. It already feels like a home from home and everyone has been so nice to me and welcomed me. "I just want to bring everything I can to the team and always give my all in games and training." Woodham, who is Liverpool's fourth signing of the summer, joins fellow Wales internationals Gemma Evans and Ceri Holland at the Merseyside club. The length of Woodham's contract has not been specified. She moved to America after six years at Reading, while she has also played for Bristol City and Charlton Athletic.
