A passionate storyteller, Claudia Turner uses her voice to advocate for others

As an incoming senior and editor-in-chief of the student newspaper High Tide, 17-year-old Claudia Turner will continue using her platform as a journalist to share people's stories and give everyone a voice.
'Journalism makes people feel special,' Turner said. 'I love making people feel like they matter, and that they are important enough to have an article written about them.'
Turner's passion for writing sparked when she took a journalism class as an elective in sixth grade, she said. She wrote her first story about an ant infestation at Paris Middle School, and knew she had discovered something special after the story's publication in the Panther Paw. https://highschool.latimes.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/My-Movie-4-1.mp3
Turner previously served as an opinion and entertainment editor at Redondo Union High School. She enjoys writing film critiques, movie reviews, and using her writing to inform the community about issues that she has a personal connection to.
'Journalism makes you think harder about things,' Turner said. 'The fact that we're able to reach some people and connect to the community is just so impactful to me.'
This summer, Turner plans to write about mental health services available to youth in the South Bay. She said she's incredibly excited to be an intern with L.A. Times High School Insider and hopes to implement all that she learns when she returns to High Tide at Redondo this fall.
'My goal, at least for the High Tide, is to share everyone's story. I also want to be able to give the kids I work with the best chance of winning awards, producing quality material to put on their resume, that sort of stuff,' Turner said. 'Who am I better to learn these techniques from than the L.A. Times?'
Turner designed this page layout in High Tide's final issue of the year. She honored the 2025 graduating class by featuring them in the senior issue, and handcrafting clay figures of each graduate.
Outside of pursuing her career in journalism, Turner loves watching 'Love Island' and listening to podcasts. She also enjoys art and baking, and spends time with her best friend and co-editor-in-chief, Daniella Gross.
'Claudia is so sweet, and we both match each other's energy,' Gross said. 'She's there with me through all my ups and downs, and she's always the person I want to hug or talk to.'
Turner and Gross both joined the journalism program at Redondo during their freshman year in 2022, and they made it their mission to become co-EICs as seniors. Gross said it was incredible to watch Turner transform from a staff writer to a confident editor who plans to pursue a career in this field.
'I just love how you can really hear her voice in her writing,' Gross said. 'Since freshman year, she has completely come out of her shell and it's so beautiful to see the person that she has grown into this year. I'm so excited to see what she's going to do as EIC.'
Turner will graduate from Redondo next year and hopes to attend a UC school as a journalism major. In her professional career, she plans to specialize in political and cultural journalism, covering topics from government policy to pop culture.
'I want to do something that matters,' Turner said. 'I want my writing to cause people to change their minds about something. Even if it's just one person, if someone felt more knowledgeable after reading one of my articles, I would be satisfied.' Related

Love Island: Who is the TOWIE cast member Ben and Tommy both ‘kissed' at same event?

Love Island's Tommy Bradley and Ben Holbrough have confessed to kissing the same girl at the same event, so who is the mystery woman? While appearing on tonight's grand Love Island finale, the pair were interviewed about their relationships with the women they left the show with. Tommy confessed he and Lucy were no longer together, after he had kissed a woman at an event he went to. He explained: "I went to my first event, free bar, unlimited drinks. Half an hour, five blue lagoon cocktails. This girl came up to me." Host Maya Jama then asked if he and Lucy were exclusive at this point to which he said no they weren't before adding: "I went to an event and kissed someone." Tommy then clarified that it was "disrespectful" to Lucy and the pair are now just friends. Before his interview ended Tommy added that he "didn't remember" the kiss. Ben was then asked about his relationship status with Andrada, whom he left the Villa with. To this Ben began speaking and said: "I was at the same event [as Tommy]." Andrada then added: "with the same girl." The crowd reacted in shock with Ben and Tommy looking embarassed. So who is the mystery woman the pair both kissed at the same event? Here's what you need to know about her. Earlier this week it was revealed Ben and Andrada had split after pictures emerged of Ben holding hands with TOWIE star Dani Imbert at the event Ben had attended with Tommy. The pair were said to be very intimate during the evening, with a source telling The Sun: "There was instant attraction from the moment they met - they spent two hours kissing at the party it was all very intimate. It's clearly very much over with Andrada as Dani seemed to be the only thing on his mind." Given Ben's closeness to Dani, it's likely she is the same woman Tommy kissed at the event. Dani, 27, is best known for appearing on ITV's reality series TOWIE, having joined the show in 2021. She has over 125,000 followers on Instagram. Love Island is available for catchup on ITVX now

Love Island 2025 winners revealed during epic season 12 finale, as couple take home £50,000 cash prize

After eight weeks of coupling up, mugging off, head turning and moving mad, Love Island came to an end for season 12 with the winning couple finally revealed. Finalists Shakira and Harry, Yasmin and Jamie, Angel and Ty, and Toni and Cach went head-to-head in one last bid to win the £50,000 prize - and, of course, the hearts of the public. With emotions running high, last-minute twists, and a few surprises along the way, it all came down to one dramatic final vote... Toni and Cach were revealed as this year's winners, splitting the £50,000 cash prize. Runners up Shakira and Harry just missed out on the prize, while Yasmin and Jamie came in third place. Speaking to Maya afterwards Yasmin and Jamie gushed about their initial spark, with Yas saying that Jamie is the "golden retriever" to her "black cat". Yasmin added that she could potentially see them becoming boyfriend and girlfriend on the outside, as Jamie called her "beautiful" and spoke about how happy he was to be leaving the show with her by his side - cute! The pair met during Casa Amor and shared their first kiss and the fire pit within seconds of meeting one another. They remained coupled up from then and sailed through the final, with Yasmin asking Jamie to be exclusive. Angel and Ty came in fourth place. Asked if she was what he was waiting for, Ty smiled: "Yeah definitely" The couple then sat down with Maya and she asked them about their plans to see one another, with Angel living in Kent and Ty in Barnsley. Angel said that they'd be meeting in London to begin with and had already planned some trips together. Sounds serious! Angel was also questioned about the divide between the girls in the villa. While she admitted that she was closer to Helena and Meg, she said that she got on with all the girls and preferred to focused on her relationship with Ty, so she wasn't "part of the divide".
