Gunman ‘targeting border agents' shot dead by police
A 27-year-old man was fatally shot after entering the Rio Grande Valley Border Patrol building near McAllen International Airport shortly before 6am on Monday, authorities said.
He was reportedly armed with a rifle and wearing tactical gear, McAllen police chief Victor Rodriguez told reporters on Monday morning.
Fox News reported the gunman had 'ambushed' border patrol agents.
No federal agents were injured, although one McAllen police officer was struck, either by shrapnel or a bullet, and is currently in a stable condition.
Mr Rodriguez identified the suspect as Ryan Louis Mosqueda.
Law enforcement said they found another rifle and more ammunition. Mr Rodriguez added the man's motive is currently unknown.
In a statement, a Department of Homeland Security spokesman said: 'This morning, an individual opened fire at the entrance of the United States Border Patrol sector annex in McAllen, Texas.
'Both border patrol agents and local police helped neutralise the shooter.
'This is an ongoing investigation led by the FBI. More information will be shared as it becomes available.'
US Customs and Border Protection said in a statement shared on social media: 'Early this morning, an active shooting took place at Rio Grande Valley Sector annex.
'The suspect is deceased. The incident is still under investigation and additional information will be shared as it becomes available.'

A review of files held by the US government on the financier Jeffrey Epstein has said there is no secret client list to be released, and confirmed his August 2019 death by suicide while in federal custody, both of which contradict conspiracy theories. A memo said that a Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) review of the files – which has for years been teased as a treasure trove of information about a larger network of wrongdoing – concluded that no further charges are expected, as investigators 'did not uncover evidence that could predicate an investigation against uncharged third parties'. The justice department also released hours of footage taken from Manhattan's metropolitan correctional center, showing that no one entered or left the area where Epstein was held during, before or after the time medical examiners concluded he took his life. 'As part of our commitment to transparency, the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation have conducted an exhaustive review of investigative holdings relating to Jeffrey Epstein,' the DOJ said. It added that the review included 'digital searches of its databases, hard drives, and network drives as well as physical searches of squad areas, locked cabinets, desks, closets, and other areas where responsive material may have been stored'. The department said it had uncovered 'a significant amount of material', including more than 300 gigabytes of data and physical evidence that included 'a large volume of images of Epstein, images and videos of victims who are either minors or appear to be minors, and over ten thousand downloaded videos and images of illegal child sex abuse material and other pornography'. 'Through this review, we found no basis to revisit the disclosure of those materials and will not permit the release of child pornography,' the memo said. Nor, the statement continued, did the review uncover an incriminating 'client list' or find credible evidence that Epstein was involved in blackmailing prominent individuals. No further charges are expected in connection with the investigations into Epstein, the memo said, as investigators 'did not uncover evidence that could predicate an investigation against uncharged third parties'. The attorney general, Pam Bondi, had previously promised the public release of scores of records related to Epstein, but an earlier release of documents did nothing to advance the conspiracy narratives that have emerged since his death. Soon after the memo was made public by Axios, and later by the independent journalist Jessica Reed Kraus on Substack, Elon Musk voiced his disappointment, posting an image to the social platform X of 'The Official Jeffrey Epstein Pedophile Arrest Counter,' set to '0000'. The billionaire CEO of Tesla, who is feuding with Donald Trump after his work to gut federal government spending through the 'department of government efficiency' (Doge) seemed to run counter to Trump's recent bill that will massively increase the deficit, has previously intimated that Epstein file releases promised by the justice department had been stalled because Trump himself was implicated. 'Time to drop the really big bomb: @realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files,' he wrote. 'That is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT.' Trump dismissed Musk's claims to NBC News: 'That's called 'old news.' That's been old news. That has been talked about for years. Even Epstein's lawyer said I had nothing to do with it – it's old news,' he said. The justice department also said its review of the files was consistent with prior disclosures on the case and its review confirmed that Epstein harmed over one thousand victims. 'Each suffered unique trauma. Sensitive information relating to these victims is intertwined throughout the materials. This includes specific details such as victim names and likenesses, physical descriptions, places of birth, associates, and employment history. 'One of our highest priorities is combatting child exploitation and bringing justice to victims. Perpetuating unfounded theories about Epstein serves neither of those ends.'

Former Dallas Cowboys star Pettis Norman has died aged 86. The NFL franchise confirmed the news with a statement on Monday, which read: 'We mourn the passing of former tight end and civil rights advocate Pettis Norman. 'Known for his selfless leadership, commitment to community, and dedication to creating equal opportunity, we were incredibly proud and grateful to share his remarkable story recently'. Norman was selected by the Dallas Texans in the 2962 AFL Draft however never played for the side. He eventually joined the Cowboys as a free agent. The former tight end spent nine seasons with the franchise and - across 121 games - recorded 124 catches, 14 touchdowns and over 1,600 receiving yards. Away from the football pitch, Norman was also an entrepreneur and a civil rights activist. He influenced the changing of the team's roommate assignments and helped break social barriers. He also founded the Dallas Together Forum, which worked alongside Dallas CEOs to improve minority hiring. He also once sued the Dallas Cowboys and San Diego Chargers over 'medical negligence' regarding the handling of an injured knee. A family statement read: '[Norman] passed away peacefully in his sleep... surrounded by his loving wife, daughters, grandson, and great grandchildren. 'A strong advocate for civil rights and dedicated to creating opportunities for all, Mr. Norman was a respected business executive and civic leader, known widely for his accomplishments both on and off the field. 16 & Pregnant star Whitney Purvis penned memorial for man whose overdose death she's charged in
MTV star Whitney Purvis, who appeared on the reality show 16 and Pregnant, penned an emotional memorial for the man whose fatal drug overdose she was formally charged with on Monday. Purvis, 33, took to the site of the funeral home which handled arrangements for John Mark Harris, a 37-year-old chef who authorities said Purvis provided deadly drugs to. 'John mark, I hate that I found out what happened today and missed your funeral,' Purvis wrote on the Henderson & Sons Funeral Home site March 3. Purvis posted the message more than three months before she was arrested Monday in Floyd County, Georgia in connection with with involuntary manslaughter and distribution of a controlled substance, among other felony counts, TMZ reported Monday. 'I wish I could've found out sooner and attended your celebration of life,' the reality star said. Purvis thanked her late confidante 'for being such a great friend to me and always making me feel beautiful and cared for.' Purvis said that her late friend had been a dear one, as they grew close over their passion for cooking. 'We bonded over being chefs, our love of cooking and our struggle,' she said. She praised Harris for his candor and intelligence in their interactions over the years. 'I could tell you anything and you always knew what to say or give me your honest opinion and advice,' Purvis said. The MTV alum added 'You've came to my rescue on many occasions and saved me over the years. 'I am so very thankful for the times we had together.' Purvis - who's also charged with use of a communication device to commit a felony involving controlled substances - said that she was dealing with serious emotional trauma over the loss of her friend. 'My brain just can't process this happened. I don't want it to be true,' she said. Purvis listed off a number of things she associated with him that she would miss in the wake of her friend's passing. 'I'll miss waking up to your silly messages and pictures you'd send me,' she said. 'I'll miss marshal and lunchbox. I'll miss your amazing cooking. I'll miss snuggling on the couch watching tv with you. 'I'll miss sitting outside, smoking camel crush cigs w/ you how we talked about talked about life, gossiping and you telling me what movies/shows I need to watch next.' Purvis characterized her late friend as 'a truly good hearted, one of a kind man' who she would 'never forget.' Purvis, who has more than 17,500 followers on Instagram, wrapped up in saying: 'Rest in peace and my condolences to your family and friends. 'I pray they are able to find some kind of comfort during this tragic time. I love you forever, John Mark. Love, Whitney.'
