DFA counters China: Youth must stay alert vs. misinformation
During the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Philippines-China diplomatic ties, Chinese Minister Councilor Wang Yulei, speaking on behalf of Ambassador Huang Xilian, encouraged young Filipinos to become ambassadors of peace between the two nations. 'To view bilateral relations objectively and rationally, and to become messengers of friendship between our two countries,' Wang said in a speech organized by the Federation of Filipino Chinese Chambers of Commerce & Industry, Inc. (FFCCCII).
He further urged the youth 'to overcome misinformation and prejudice, to see the real China.' However, the Chinese Embassy did not specify what forms of 'misinformation' it was referring to.
The DFA, in its response, highlighted that critical awareness must come first. 'The youth should be vigilant, focused, and develop a sharp mind and discernment of events to fight against all forms of misinformation. The DFA will continue to work with partners to strengthen resilience among our youth,' the agency said.
The department also noted that 'everyone is agreed on the value of dialogue and diplomacy. These points are not new, and this is what Filipinos have been advocating for years.'
Tensions between the two countries persist, particularly over competing claims in the South China Sea. Despite a 2016 arbitral ruling favoring the Philippines and invalidating China's expansive 'ten-dash line' claims, Beijing has continued building structures on artificial islands, including Mischief Reef.
In recent weeks, the Philippine government condemned the Chinese Coast Guard's use of water cannons against a Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) vessel operating within the West Philippine Sea—part of the country's exclusive economic zone.
The Chinese Embassy's youth-centered messaging was also promoted through a social media contest aimed at engaging young Filipinos. But as diplomatic rhetoric heightens, the DFA is making it clear that discernment—not just optimism—must guide the next generation's view of regional affairs. — BM, GMA Integrated News

Think tank to commemorate PH arbitral win vs. China

A high-level security forum will take place on July 11, marking the 9th anniversary of the Philippines' arbitral victory against China in the West Philippine Sea. According to Stratbase Institute, the conference will highlight the country's commitment to defending its sovereignty in accordance with rules-based international order. Dubbed as the '9th Year of the Arbitral Victory: Defending the Rules-Based Order through Reinforced Defense Capabilities and Partnerships,'' the forum will be done in partnership with the Australian Embassy in the Philippines. Stratbase Institute President Victor Andres 'Dindo' Manhit said the forum is not simply a legal commemoration but a reaffirmation of Manila's sovereign rights as well as a commitment to the rule of law. 'Staying silent in the face of China's aggression is not neutrality, but neglect,' Manhit said in a press release. 'Now is the time for clarity and courage from our leaders.' The discussions will center on maritime cooperation, regional security, and the importance of enforcing the Arbitral Award as a bulwark of peace in the Indo-Pacific. The forum will also acknowledge the Armed Forces of the Philippines and Philippine Coast Guard personnel who risk their lives defending the country's waters. 'They do not stand alone. Our partners stand with us because this is not just our fight — it's a test of whether international law still matters,' Manhit said. Further, it will pay tribute to late Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert Del Rosario, who played a key role in the arbitral case. On July 12, 2016, the Philippines scored a victory against China in a landmark ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration that invalidated Beijing's massive claims in the South China Sea. China has since ignored the ruling as it continues its aggression in the region. Abby Binay says Makati has enough funds to settle subway project
The Makati City government has sufficient funds to pay the $160 million award the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC) may give in favor of Philippine Infradev Holdings Inc. without cutting benefits for residents, according to former Mayor Abby Binay-Campos on Monday. Binay-Campos said the $160 million compromise — which took into account Infradev's actual investments as confirmed by Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC) — was a strategic way to shield the city from the firm's $1.7-billion arbitration claim filed before SIAC. 'Claims that there will be no more funds for services and operations are baseless,' Binay-Campos said in a press release. Earlier, the former mayor said the city would be given full ownership of the corporate entity established to develop and operate the stalled underground train system in the city as part of proceedings with the SIAC. Her sister, newly elected Mayor Nancy Binay, has flagged a supposed 'midnight settlement' that the previous administration entered seven days before the end of their term, obligating the city to pay P8.96 billion to the private partner Philippine InfraDev Holdings Inc. Binay-Campos denounced allegations that the deal was rushed or a 'midnight agreement,' reiterating that it was a calculated move to not only prevent larger losses, but also to substantially raise the city's assets and provide long-term financial stability. 'The compromise was not plucked out of thin air. It took into account actual data and fair valuation principles as confirmed by PwC, an internationally-known audit firm,'' she said. She also said her successor and sister could review or revoke the settlement, but warned: 'Go ahead. But show Makatizens your brand of service, Ate.' To recall, the Makati Subway System, then envisioned to be a 10-kilometer subway from EDSA-Ayala to Ospital ng Makati, broke ground in 2018. InfraDev and its Chinese partners Greenland Holdings Group, Jiangsu Provincial Construction Group Co. Ltd. Holdings Ltd., and China Harbour Engineering Company Ltd. were awarded the public-private partnership deal to undertake the Makati City Subway project by the Makati City government in 2019. Construction activities, however, were halted in 2022 due to the Supreme Court ruling that placed the jurisdiction of several areas to Taguig City. Following the ruling, Philippine Infradev Holdings Inc. said the Makati Subway System was rendered unviable, with the depot originally set to be located in Barangay Cembo.
