‘World's oldest marathon runner', the ‘Turbaned Tornado', dies aged 114 in road accident

Malay Mail2 days ago
NEW DELHI, July 15 — India's Fauja Singh, believed to be the world's oldest distance runner, has died in a road accident aged 114, his biographer said Tuesday.
Singh, an Indian-born British national, nicknamed the 'Turbaned Tornado', died after being hit by a vehicle in Punjab state's Jalandhar district on Monday.
'My Turbaned Tornado is no more,' Fauja's biographer Khushwant Singh wrote on X.
'He was struck by an unidentified vehicle... in his village, Bias, while crossing the road. Rest in peace, my dear Fauja.'
Singh did not have a birth certificate but his family said he was born on April 1, 1911.
He ran full marathons (42 kilometre) till the age of 100.
His last race was a 10-kilometre event at the 2013 Hong Kong Marathon when 101, where he finished in one hour, 32 minutes and 28 seconds.
He became an international sensation after taking up distance running at the ripe old age of 89, after the death of his wife and one of his sons, inspired by seeing marathons on television.
Although widely regarded as the world's oldest marathon runner, he was not certified by Guinness World Records as he could not prove his age, saying that birth certificates did not exist when he was born under British colonial rule in 2011.
Singh was a torchbearer for the Olympics at Athens 2004 and London 2012, and appeared in advertisements with sports stars such as David Beckham and Muhammad Ali.
His strength and vitality were credited to a routine of farm walks and a diet including Indian sweet laddu packed with dry fruits and home-churned curd.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute on social media.
'Fauja Singh was extraordinary because of his unique persona and the manner in which he inspired the youth of India on a very important topic of fitness,' said Modi on X
'He was an exceptional athlete with incredible determination. Pained by his passing away. My thoughts are with his family and countless admirers around the world.' — AFP

Jon Rahm confident to end Spain's British Open drought

Jon Rahm expressed strong confidence ahead of his attempt to break Spain's 37-year British Open title drought as the 153rd edition begins at Royal Portrush. The two-time major champion could become only the second Spaniard to claim the Claret Jug after Seve Ballesteros, who won it three times. Rahm arrives in Northern Ireland following a runner-up finish at the LIV Golf event in Valderrama, adding to his strong performances at this year's US Open and PGA Championship, where he secured top-10 finishes. 'I always feel close. I'm always confident that I'm there,' Rahm told reporters. 'Last week, especially on Sunday, it was very nice. It was a very good round of golf... So feeling good, feeling confident. Hopefully I can give it a run again this week.' Spain has not celebrated a British Open victory since Ballesteros' third win in 1988, though several players have come close. Jose Maria Olazabal, a two-time Masters champion, twice finished third, while Sergio Garcia was runner-up in 2007 and 2014. Rahm, now Spain's leading contender, nearly staged a comeback in 2021 before settling for a tie for third and was part of a four-way tie for second in 2023. 'Obviously there's been a few (Spanish contenders). The main ones, Ollie and Sergio, have had their chances,' Rahm said. 'It's never easy to win a major, and it's never easy to win an Open.' Beyond the Open, Rahm is also focused on securing a Ryder Cup spot. Currently 20th in the European points standings, he may need a captain's pick from Luke Donald to join the team for September's event in New York. 'Yeah, it's been on my mind,' Rahm admitted. 'It's been on my mind a year ago, and it will continue on my mind as long as I play golf in my career.'

The hosts went 2-1 up in the five-test series with a thrilling 22-run victory but were found two overs short of target in a match where the Dukes ball went out of shape several times and had to be replaced. "England captain Ben Stokes pled guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing," the International Cricket Council said in a statement. Players lose 5% of their match fees for every over their team fail to bowl in the allotted time. It also costs the team one WTC point. England slipped from second to third in the WTC standings behind Sri Lanka following the points deduction. Australia, who completed a 3-0 sweep of West Indies earlier this week, lead the standings in the new 2025-2027 cycle. (Reporting by Amlan Chakraborty in New Delhi; editing by Peter Rutherford)

Cricket-England's Archer keen to play remaining India tests, Ashes

FILE PHOTO: Cricket - International Test Match Series - Third Test - England v India - Lord's Cricket Ground, London, Britain - July 14, 2025 England's Jofra Archer prepares to bowl Action Images via Reuters/Peter Cziborra/File Photo LONDON (Reuters) -After missing four years of test duty due to injury, England speedster Jofra Archer is keen to make up for lost time and says he wants to play the final two tests against India and prove he deserves a place in the squad for the Ashes series in Australia. Archer made his test comeback at Lord's in the third test, bowling at full tilt to claim five wickets, including three in the second innings as England clinched a 22-run victory to go 2-1 up in the five-match series. England management, men's managing director Rob Key in particular, have been careful about Archer's workload since his recovery from elbow and back injuries but the bowler is raring to go. "I can play the other two (against India) if they let me," Archer told Sky Sports. "I don't want to lose this series. I told 'Keysey' I wanted to play the test summer and I wanted to play the Ashes. "I think one tick is already there and I will do everything possible in my power to be on the plane in November." It was Archer's first test since coach Brendon 'Baz' McCullum and captain Ben Stokes took the helm in 2022 and implemented an exciting result-oriented approach. Archer was happy how his reintegration into the test squad had been handled. "Obviously it would have been the format which would have taken the most time to come back to. So I played 50-over and T20 for the last year and a half, two years," he said. "The guys have played some really exciting cricket since Baz took over. I think the mentality of the team under Baz suits the way I like to play my cricket. "I just couldn't wait to get back and actually do it without having to be prompted to do it." The fourth test against India begins on July 23 in Manchester. (Reporting by Amlan Chakraborty in New Delhi; editing by Peter Rutherford)
