Jameel Motors to launch GAC electric vehicles in UK

Jameel Motors, a leading provider of mobility solutions and partner of choice to top automotive brands, has signed a joint venture agreement with Chinese automaker GAC to distribute the latter's electric vehicles in the UK. In April, Jameel Motors announced it had won a distribution agreement for GAC in Poland through a competitive process involving both local and international companies.
This innovative joint venture will be one of the first of its kind in the UK with a Chinese automaker, a market with significant long-term potential and will be established after completion of relevant regulatory and antitrust approvals. With battery electric vehicle registrations up 25.8 percent year-on-year and accounting for 21.8 percent of new car sales, the UK is a strong and expanding hub for EV adoption.
The agreement expands Jameel Motors' existing portfolio in the UK — where it already distributes the electric commercial vehicle brand Farizon Auto — and will be its first passenger vehicle brand in the market. The partnership will bring new EVs to the UK, driving market growth and offering customers a broader range of choices.
Initially, two all-electric models from GAC AION will be available: the AION V, a C-segment SUV, and the AION UT, a B-segment hatchback. AION showcases GAC's core strengths of award-winning quality and pioneering technology — ideally suited to meet the rising demand for quality electric vehicles among UK drivers. They will be available through select retail partners across the UK, with first customer deliveries expected at the end of Q1 2026. Additional models will follow to expand the AION lineup.
Jasmmine Wong, chief executive — Jameel Motors, said: 'The joint venture with GAC represents a shared vision, and an exciting opportunity to meet the UK's growing demand for smarter, cleaner passenger vehicles. Led by customer preference and guided by our expertise, we're committed to staying ahead of trends and delivering first-class solutions that are both innovative and sustainable.'
Wayne Wei, president — GAC International, added: 'GAC's entry into the UK marks a crucial step in its internationalization strategy. As we set foot in this dynamic market, GAC is committed to bringing industry-leading products and first-class services to UK consumers.'
GAC is one of China's major car manufacturers, ranking No. 181 in the Fortune Global 500 and having gained international recognition for its high-quality vehicles, advanced technological solutions, and commitment to sustainability. GAC's business spans seven major sectors: R&D, complete vehicles, auto parts, energy and ecosystem, international operations, trade and mobility, as well as investment and finance.
As of today, GAC has a market presence across the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe, Africa and America, in a total of 84 countries and regions worldwide. Driven by a strong commitment to innovation, GAC has reached major milestones in its international expansion, with overseas sales of its self-branded vehicles surpassing 100,000 units for the first time in 2024, a 92.3 percent year-on-year increase.
Jameel Motors represents some of the world's most recognized commercial and passenger vehicle brands and has operations in more than 10 countries across the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Asia and Australia. This agreement marks another milestone as Jameel Motors continues to expand internationally and harness innovation for the future of mobility.

UK government backs London bid to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships

The British government has announced its support of London's bid to host the 2029 athletics world championships. London hosted the biannual premier track-and-field event in 2017 at the London Stadium, which also held the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2012 Olympic Games. The plan is to stage the 2029 worlds at the same venue. Saturday's announcement included the government's support of a bid for Britain to host the 2029 World Para Athletics Championships. Subject to funding from partners being confirmed, the government has agreed to provide significant funding for both bids, reflecting the UK's ambition to once again bring the world's greatest athletes to UK shores, it said in a statement. The announcement came with London hosting a Diamond League event on Saturday. This year's athletics worlds will take place in Tokyo in September. The 2027 edition will be held in Beijing. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he's delighted to support the bid. The event would provide a boost for UK businesses and support jobs as well as bring our communities together, he said in a statement.

German chancellor Merz says his government has a ‘stable foundation' despite a dispute

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Friday that his coalition has a stable foundation and has achieved a lot in its first 10 weeks but acknowledged that occasional setbacks are a risk in government as his administration struggles with its first major dispute. Merz took office on May 6 leading a coalition of his conservative Union bloc with the center-left Social Democrats that has a relatively thin parliamentary majority. He vowed to strengthen Europe's biggest economy after years of stagnation, enable Germany to build Europe's strongest conventional army and keep the US on board with aid to Ukraine. The government has launched a program to encourage investment, set in motion plans to raise defense spending and implemented a tougher approach to migration. Merz has taken a prominent role in diplomacy on Ukraine and other issues. Merz said at the German leaders' annual summer news conference that he is 'very satisfied with what we have achieved in the first 10 weeks.' Merz set out to avoid the infighting that plagued ex-Chancellor Olaf Scholz's three-party coalition which collapsed in November. However, the new government's record has been overshadowed over the past week by parliament's failure to elect three new justices for Germany's highest court. Nominations have in the past mostly been approved uneventfully. But planned votes last Friday were scrapped at the last minute after some lawmakers in Merz's bloc balked at a candidate put forward by the Social Democrats. Opponents of the nominee, law professor Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf, have cited her perceived liberal views on issues such as abortion. Leading Social Democrats have been irked by the conservatives' failure to follow through on an agreement on the new justices and have stood by their candidate. Merz has downplayed the argument and insisted Friday that there is no time pressure to rush to a solution. And he rejected a suggestion that his coalition is on wobbly ground with the court nominee flap following its bumpy start when lawmakers needed an unprecedented two rounds of voting to elect Merz as chancellor in May. 'This government stands on a stable foundation, on a stable majority in the German parliament,' Merz said. 'But you see from these two votes that we are living in very uncertain times, also regarding supposed certainties in the German parliament.' He said that 'we know what job we have and high points and successes are part of that, as well as occasional setbacks.' Recent polls have suggested that Merz's coalition has work to do to convince voters. Ratings for the Union and Social Democrats haven't picked up from their lackluster showing in Germany's February election. Surveys show the far-right anti-immigration Alternative for Germany solidifying its strong second place.

Pakistan launches major electric vehicle push, targets students and unemployed

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistani federal government is targeting students and unemployed individuals in a major scheme to promote the use of electric vehicles, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced on Friday, saying the move will save billions of dollars in fuel imports, help protect environment and promote local industry. The prime minister said this while presiding over a meeting in Islamabad to review promotion of electric vehicles in the country and the government assistance in acquisition of electric bikes, rickshaws and loaders, according to Sharif's office. The proposed scheme comes amid the cash-strapped South Asian country's efforts to avoid costly oil imports that shrank five percent to $15 billion from July 2024 till May 2025, according to latest official figures. Islamabad is currently trying to formulate a plan to make electric vehicles accessible to people. Officials briefed participants of Friday's meeting that steps were being taken to enable people to acquire electric bikes, rickshaws and loaders through low-cost loans and the government will assist provision of more than 100,000 electric bikes and 3,000 rickshaws and loading vehicles. 'The federal government, including the federal board, will provide electric bikes to the toppers of boards across the country,' Sharif was quoted as saying. 'The government will provide electric rickshaws and loaders to unemployed people for employment on a priority basis.' Under the scheme, which is likely to be launched soon, free electric bikes will be provided to students who have shown exceptional performance at the intermediate level in educational boards across the country, according to Sharif's office. A special quota of 25 percent has been kept for women, while the quota of provinces has been allocated in proportion to the population. Pakistan last month unveiled a new Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy 2025–2030, which targets 30 percent of all new vehicle sales to be electric by 2030. The policy, which covers cars, buses, motorcycles and rickshaws, aims to accelerate the country's shift toward sustainable transport, reduce fossil fuel dependence, and curb climate-warming emissions. Sharif instructed officials to ensure a complete ecosystem for the production and maintenance of electric vehicles in the country, preferring people belonging to the economically weaker section in the government's scheme. 'Third-party validation should be done for the entire mechanism of distribution of electric vehicles and government assistance in it,' he said. Officials informed the meeting's participants that four new battery manufacturing companies are starting their operations in the country, which will create new business opportunities and employment in Pakistan. 'The prime minister instructed [officials] to ensure that the electric bikes, rickshaws and loaders provided in the proposed scheme meet the best quality and safety standards,' Sharif's office said.
