Golden Gators: Florida softball's Falby, Erickson Gold Glovers again, Shumaker earns top honor
In her maiden voyage with the Gators, she set not only freshman records, but also overall program records.
Tuesday night, on the sport's biggest stage, she added one more, and it was more prestigious one of all.

Shumaker was named the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Freshman of the Year on Tuesday in Oklahoma City – two days before the Gators kick off the WCWS vs. Texas.
Shumaker became the second freshman to claim the award for the Gators – joining Amanda Lorenz. Lorenz, a UF legend, grew up in Moorpark in Southern California, not far from Shumaker's hometown of Fullerton. The two played in many of the same AAU circuits.
She currently sits at 23 home runs and 86 RBIs. Both of those tie program records. For home runs, she ties with Brittany Schutte in 2011, and RBIs with Jocelyn Erickson last season.
During Florida's pre-WCWS press conference Wednesday, Shumaker touched on what the experience of OKC has been like.

'It's all really surreal. It's crazy to think I'm here after watching it for so many years,' Shumaker said. 'It's an unreal venue, so many amazing softball fans. We're growing the game we have been playing since we were five, six years old.'
Shumaker wasn't the only Gator to leave Wednesday with hardware. Kendra Falby and Erickson made history by going back-to-back with Gold Gloves, becoming just the second and third player to do so.
Falby was a no brainer. She awed players, coaches and fans alike with a new home run-stealing catch almost every week. This season, though, came with the new honor of All-American as she was named a second teamer – the first of her career.
The speedster said she credits her teammates more than anyone for her success.

'The numbers that I've been able to put up when it comes to runs wouldn't be any help without Jocelyn and Taylor Shumaker and like the list goes on,' Falby said. 'It's really thanks to my teammates and pushing me every single day.'
Erickson credited outfielders like Falby for pushing her. Falby, along with fellow outfielders Shumaker and Korbe Otis, have mentioned how competitive the outfielders are in practice. Erickson said that mantra rubs off on the rest of the team.
'Our team feeds off of each other. When the outfield makes insane plays, like when Kendra robs a home run, it just makes me want to be so much better,' Erickson said. 'Having teammates around you that want to push you to be your best is honestly surreal.'
In total, Shumaker was named as a first team All-American by the NFCA, and Falby and Mia Williams were named second team.

Florida begins its WCWS journey vs. Texas at 12 p.m. ET from Devon Park in Oklahoma City.

ESPN says Florida can compete for national championship 'if' these 4 things happen
The upcoming college football season could be among the best in recent history for the University of Florida, but several things must go right for that to happen. ESPN's Bill Connelly broke down the major title contenders with his "ifs" system — as in Florida wins the national championship if such-and-such happens. There are teams with two ifs, three ifs and four ifs. Florida is a four-if team, and a lot of the pressure falls on the shoulders of sophomore quarterback DJ Lagway. Connelly relies on data and numbers in his writing, so it's not surprising to see him question Lagway, who is still fairly green. Still, Connelly writes that Florida wins the College Football Playoffs "if Lagway is what we think he is." The team played differently with Lagway on the field last year, but he only started and completed a handful of games as a true freshman. Beginning the year behind Graham Mertz and minor injuries have him a bit less prepared than some would like for a supposed Heisman contender. "Like Arch Manning, we're projecting success onto DJ Lagway," Connelly wrote. "The No. 8 prospect in the 2024 class went 6-1 as a starter and averaged an explosive 16.7 yards per completion. But he also threw nine interceptions with subpar efficiency, and he ranked 69th in Total QBR. That he's currently No. 6 in the Heisman odds, then, feels aggressive. Lagway has great size, a huge arm and solid mobility, but that's a lot of hype." Lagway needs some help The second stipulation for Florida to win it all is "if (Lagway) has receivers." There's a lot of unproven talent in Florida's wide receivers room ready to take the place of Elijhah Badger and Chimere Dike. UCLA transfer J. Michael Sturdivant figures to be in the mix alongside Eugene Wilson III, who is returning from injury, and speedster Aidan Mizell. "Wilson caught 61 passes as a freshman and had receptions of 85 and 40 yards early in 2024 before a season-ending injury. He's a likely star, but Lagway will also need help from others," wrote Connelly. Five-star freshmen Vernell Brown III and Dallas Wilson are also likely to see some action. Kahleil Jackson is a veteran presence who showed plenty of flashes before his 2024 ended early due to surgery. Sophomore Tank Hawkins, redshirt freshman TJ Abrams and true freshman Naeshaun Montgomery are all talented players who will compete for a spot in the rotation, too. Some defensive development is needed Florida dealt with a litany of injuries last season, and the underclassmen got plenty of playing time as a result. Connelly says that "last season's sophomore defenders become steely-eyed veterans" if Florida is going to win the national championship. "Of the 12 returning defenders who had 200-plus snaps, eight are now sophomores or juniors. That the Gators still jumped from 60th to 23rd in defensive SP+ was exciting, and it wouldn't be surprising if the Gators enjoyed another leap in 2025. That will require juniors such as nickel Sharif Denson and linebacker Grayson Howard to raise their games even more." Cormani McClain and Dijon Johnson are two other defensive backs who could stand to take a step forward if they're going to be regulars in the Florida secondary. In the front seven, LJ McCray and Myles Graham are two names expected to take on a bigger role this year. Depth, depth, depth Every good football team has depth at a position or two. The great ones have depth at several spots on the field. Florida plays what might be the toughest regular season schedule for the second year in a row, and it took two late-season upsets to finish 8-5 last year. Florida wins the national championship if "the Gators have the depth to survive this ridiculous schedule," according to Connelly. "Upsets of LSU and Ole Miss were exciting, but with seven more projected top-15 opponents on the schedule, a genuine title run will require even more huge wins and exceptional depth." Football helped Ben Shelton's tennis game. Just don't make a big deal out of it.
To be clear, Ben Shelton does not want to embellish his youth football career. Football was just a hobby for Shelton — and hard to avoid while growing up in the heart of SEC country in Gainesville, Florida, before attending the University of Florida. But the tennis star couldn't help but laugh when the question came up at Wimbledon. In a segment that ended up going viral, a British on-court interviewer described Shelton as a 'quarterbacker.' Shelton jokingly explained what a football looks like to the crowd and confirmed he did indeed play 'quarterback, or quarterbacker, either way.'

‘They took their chance': Arteta happy with teenagers Dowman and Salmon after Arsenal friendly
Mikel Arteta says 15-year-olds Max Dowman and Marli Salmon 'took their chance' with 'incredible' performances, as the pair made their senior debuts in Arsenal's friendly against AC Milan in Singapore. Midfielder Dowman, an England youth international, and defender Salmon came off the bench as Arsenal kicked-off their pre-season tour of Asia with a 1-0 win over Milan, settled by Bukayo Saka's goal — although they lost a pre-arranged penalty shootout 6-5 after the match. There is a buzz about Dowman, who is the youngest player ever to score in a UEFA Youth League game when he netted for Arsenal's Under-18s, aged 14, in a 4-1 defeat to their Atalanta counterparts in September 2024. Asked what the plan for the teenager would be this season, Arteta said: 'We don't know with all the young kids. At the end they are in and around the team constantly and they getting used to the dynamics and the demands. 'And especially raising the physical levels because the demands they need to perform and impact at the level is really high physical standards. They are getting there and that gives them a good platform and they will have to earn it.' Defenders Jurrien Timber and Gabriel Magalhaes missed the game through injury. 'With Jurrien, he is still not there. He is still not fully training yet with us,' Arteta said. 'Gabby had a little niggle the other day in training. Because the fact that he has been out so long as well we have to manage him. We have been in Spain, different pitch, different conditions, go to the UK, different ones, come here, again a lot of changes. We have to minimise the risk with him.'
