Udinese clarify Lucca transfer stance after ‘unpleasant' penalty incident
Udinese director Gianluca Nani insists that the recent penalty incident involving their striker Lorenzo Lucca was 'unpleasant' but claims the club don't want to sell the Italian striker in the summer.
Lucca argued with his teammates on the pitch on Friday, pushing to take a penalty kick, which he later converted, for a 1-0 win at the Stadio Via del Mare against Lecce.
However, his persistence in taking the penalty cost him a yellow card and forced coach Kosta Runjaić to replace the Italian forward a few minutes later.
'It was an unpleasant and unsportsmanlike incident, but it was then handled perfectly, primarily by the coach, who showed his integrity by making the substitution,' Udinese director Nanni told Il Messaggero Veneto via TMW.
'I also appreciated Bijol's reaction after the match. He apologized to all the fans, including those of Lecce, without blaming Lucca, emphasizing that he was part of the group.'
Reports in Italy suggested Udinese would put Lucca on the market in the summer, but Nanni insisted this was not the case.
'We don't want to sell him, even though we know that certain offers can change the players' perspective, making it difficult to keep them,' he said.
'Lucca made a mistake, and I'm not encouraging him to repeat it, but he also showed character by insisting on taking the penalty at all costs. A player like that, I'd have him play in a Champions League final.'
Lucca has scored 10 goals in 25 Serie A appearances this season, providing one assist as well.
Lautaro Martinez has scored the same number of league goals this term, and only Mateo Retegui, Moise Kean, Marcus Thuram, and Ademola Lookman have more.

🎥 Celebrate Kevin de Bruyne's birthday with this UCL stunner
Few players have commanded the level of reverence that Kevin De Bruyne has earned across his glistening career. From Genk prodigy to Chelsea unwanted, Bundesliga stardom with Bremen and Wolfsburg, and ultimately, Man City legend, the Belgian great is unquestionably one of the top attacking midfielders in recent decades, if not longer. Advertisement But his time at Manchester City will no doubt see him remembered as an all-timer both for the club and the Premier League at large, with his influence extended to the continent in the Champions League. A stunning long-range effort from the Ghent native against Real Madrid is one of the best of his career, with a blockbuster strike beating fellow Red Devil Thibaut Courtois to earn City a 1-1 first-leg draw at a silenced Bernabéu, setting them up for a 4-0 thrashing of the Spanish giants a week later. Man City would go on to claim UCL honours with a 1-0 win over Inter the following month to finally put a rubber stamp on the club's continental ambitions, with KDB at the heart of it all. Advertisement And with today being the day of his birthday, despite his move to Napoli, De Bruyne's legacy at the Etihad remains cemented. 📸 Julian Finney - 2023 Getty Images

(Photo by) Empoli are still making a healthy profit, but as part of the agreement that saw them snap up the player last year for free, they will owe his former club Chelsea a 40 per cent cut of the fee. That means the Tuscans are set to pocket €3m and Chelsea will get €2m from the sale. A product of the Chelsea youth academy, Anjorin also played for Lokomotiv Moscow, Huddersfield and Portsmouth before moving to Italy. He scored two goals with three assists in 22 Serie A games this season, but could not prevent Empoli's relegation. The English player is seen as the heir to Milan-bound Samuele Ricci.
