Disgraced radio star Marty Sheargold's replacement revealed as NRL great Nathan Hindmarsh

News.com.au23-04-2025
It has been revealed that a footy legend has been tapped to take over Marty Sheargold's coveted radio slot following his controversial departure earlier this year.
Sheargold sparked outrage when he made derogatory remarks about the Matildas and women's sport in general back in February
He claimed on his Triple M radio show (which aired nationally from 3-4pm and then into NSW and QLD for an additional two hours until 6pm) that the professional football team reminded him of 'year 10 girls' and he said he would 'rather hammer a nail' through his penis than watch women's sport.

In the wake of his departure, Sheargold's 4-6pm Rush Hour show for NSW listeners will now be hosted by NRL great Nathan Hindmarsh, along with broadcaster Anthony Maroon, sports reporter Adam Peacock and NRLW premiership players Millie Elliott, Sam Bremner and Keeley Davis.
The show will begin on April 28.
Hindmarsh, who captained the Parramatta Eels, has enjoyed a long-running TV role with Fox Sports since retiring from the sport in 2012.
As for Triple M listeners in Qld, they're set to get a different Rush Hour hosted by Ben 'Dobbo' Dobbin and Elliott Lovejoy.
The duo will be joined by a rotating line-up of respected NRLW stars including Ali Brigginshaw, Romy Teitzel, Jaime Chapman and Mackenzie Weale.
Following intense public backlash from Sheargold's on-air remarks earlier this year, Southern Cross Austereo Chief Content Officer Dave Cameron, confirmed Sheargold and the network had 'mutually agreed to part ways'.
Sheargold later issued an apology for his remarks about the Matildas, saying: 'Any comedy including mine can miss the mark sometimes and I can see why people may have taken offence at my comments regarding the Matildas. I sincerely apologise.'
His remarks became the focus of such backlash that even Anthony Albanese added his voice to the wave of criticism.
'They were just shocking comments that anyone could think it, let alone say it,' the Prime Minister said.
'Completely unacceptable. The Tillies are just legends. They excited and brought together the whole country (during the 2023 World Cup). The whole country was united in cheering for them.'
Along with his derogatory comments about the Matildas, Sheargold also sparked outrage when he weighed in on an important women's health issue.
'God, don't ladies carry on. Jesus Christ, there is no end of it,' he told listeners, 'Honestly, endometriosis, and this is controversial. No, I'm going to say it, it's controversial. It's made-up.'

Final countdown as Spain set up England Euros encounter

Aitana Bonmati has scored in extra time to send Spain to their first Women's European Championship final with a 1-0 win over Germany. Spain's victory on Wednesday (Thursday AEST) set up a repeat of the 2023 World Cup title match against England. A stubborn performance by Germany had seen them take the world champions to extra time, and Spain needed a superb strike from the two-time Ballon d'Or winner to secure a first ever win over Germany. "I feel so proud. We deserved this," Bonmati said. "We have played a great tournament throughout. We had a hard fight tonight, of course, because we were playing Germany. First to beat Germany and then to advance to the final of the Euros. Who could ask for more?" In the 113th minute, Athenea del Castillo threaded the ball through to Bonmati, who got past Rebecca Knaak with a clever dummy and turn before squeezing home an audacious attempt from the tightest of angles. "We had analysed her (Knaak) with our analysts and our goalkeeping coach and knew that she would leave the near post unprotected, and that is what happened. I just slotted it home," Bonmati said. Spain moved closer to adding the European Championship trophy to their collection after winning the World Cup and Nations League in the past two years. Montse Tome's team will face defending champions England on Sunday (local time) in a repeat of the 2023 World Cup final that Spain won 1-0. England also needed extra time to snatch a 2-1 win over Italy on Tuesday. Germany were bidding for a record-extending ninth European title, but they were up against the world champions and pre-tournament favourites.

Spain defeats Germany 1-0 in extra time to reach Euro 2025 final against England

Spain's Aitana Bonmatí has struck a superb extra-time winner to fire her side to a 1-0 victory over Germany, sending the World Cup winners through to the Women's European Championship final for the first time. The victory set up a decider against reigning champions England in Basel on Monday morning AEST. It will be a re-match of the 2023 World Cup final in Sydney, which Spain won 1-0. Bonmatí finally broke the deadlock in the 113th minute. She picked up a ball in the left channel and spotted a gap left by Germany keeper Ann-Katrin Berger at the near post, before whipping a shot from a tight angle into the net. Spain captain Irene Paredes struck the foot of a post with a first-half header as her side dominated possession, with the Germans building a solid block and inviting the Spaniards to attack while they attempted to strike on the counter. Germany winger Klara Buehl was impressive throughout the match, getting in behind the Spanish defence in the 63rd minute but shooting straight at goalkeeper Cata Coll. With the Germans defending superbly, Spain struggled to break them down. The World Cup champions were almost caught out in stoppage time when Buehl had a deflected effort that Coll had to claw away, but the match ended scoreless, forcing extra time. Germany, who came into the match with a record of nine wins in 10 previous Euro semifinals, looked set to drag the match to penalties, but Bonmatí had other ideas. England also needed extra time to snatch a 2-1 win over Italy in their semifinal on Wednesday AEST. Reuters

Sydney FC 'in talks' with Bayern Munich great Muller

A-League side Sydney FC have been in talks with Bayern Munich great Thomas Muller, according to reports. Muller, who has left the German Bundesliga giants after the recent Club World Cup, has been heavily linked to a move to the MLS in the United States. But according to the report in the Sydney Morning Herald, the player and his representatives have also been in talks with the Sky Blues "for several weeks" about a move to Australia, and the club believes there is still a chance of convincing him. Sources with knowledge of the negotiations said that the 2014 World Cup winner had been impressed with the pitch made to him by Sydney FC. A move would see Muller play again alongside former Bayern teammate Douglas Costa. The report added that Muller's answer is expected "within the next week or so, with the club recently informed that they are one of the final two options he is considering." Broadcaster Sky have reported that one of the options in the US for Muller is Los Angeles FC, while FC Cincinnati said last month that they had offered Muller a deal. The Herald said on Wednesday that Sydney FC have declined to comment, while Muller's management was also contacted for comment. Muller has yet to officially confirm whether he will continue playing football. The veteran midfielder, who boasts 131 Germany caps, is currently on holiday and is expected to sign a contract with his new club next week, Sky said. Muller left Bayern after 25 years of service as his contract expired this summer and he wasn't given a new deal. His last game for his boyhood club was the 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup quarter-finals.
