Tennis: Former champion Rybakina crashes out of Wimbledon - Omni sports

Al-Ahram Weekly2 days ago
Former champion Elena Rybakina became the latest star to suffer a shock Wimbledon exit losing to Denmark's Clara Tauson 7-6 (8/6), 6-3 on Saturday.
Rybakina, the Kazakh 11th seed, won her maiden Grand Slam title at Wimbledon in 2022 and had reached the semi-finals last year.
But the 26-year-old's hopes of another strong run were ended by 23rd-seeded Tauson in a third-round tie on Court Two.
Rybakina, who reached the Australian Open final in 2023, joins a long list of high seeds to crash out of the women's tournament.
Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula, Jasmine Paolini, Zheng Qinwen and Madison Keys all suffered upsets earlier in the week.
World number one Aryna Sabalenka is the last of the top six seeds still standing at the All England Club.
Rybakina's defeat continues a disappointing year for the former world number three, who has failed to make it past the last 16 at the three Grand Slams.
Tauson is through to the fourth round of a Grand Slam for only the second time, and the first time since last year's French Open.
The 22-year-old, a former junior world number one whose promising career has been hampered by injuries, had lost in the first round on her three previous main draw appearances at Wimbledon.

Durant deal becomes NBA-record 7-team trade: Reports - Omni sports

Kevin Durant's trade from the Phoenix Suns to the Houston Rockets was agreed upon in principle on Sunday as part of an NBA-record seven-team deal, according to multiple reports. The Rockets will also welcome back Clint Capela in a sign-and-trade deal with Atlanta, according to The Athletic and ESPN, citing unnamed souces. Also involved in the blockbuster transfer were the Brooklyn Nets, Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves and Los Angeles Lakers. Durant, a 15-time NBA All-Star forward and four-time league scoring leader, turns 37 in September. The 2014 NBA Most Valuable Player won NBA titles with Golden State in 2017 and 2018. Capela, a 31-year-old Swiss center, played his first six NBA seasons in Houston and the past five for the Hawks. He averaged 8.9 points, 8.5 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 1.0 blocks a game and joins New Zealand's Steven Adams as a big-man backup to Turkey's Alperen Sengun. The Suns' haul after losing Durant included 18-year-old South Sudanese 7-foot-2 (2.18m) center Khaman Maluach, the 10th overall pick in June's NBA draft, plus Houston forward Dillon Brooks of Canada and guard Jalen Green, Atlanta wing Daeqwon Plowden, Minnesota forward Rasheer Fleming, Golden State guard Koby Brea from the Dominican Republic and a future draft pick. The Hawks got cash and a 2031 draft pick swap from Houston while Brooklyn obtained two future second-round selections and sent the rights to incoming US rookie forward Adou Thiero to the Lakers. The Warriors obtained the rights to Australian forward Alex Toohey, the 52nd pick in last month's draft, and US guard Jahmai Mashack, the last pick in the draft. Minnesota landed two future draft picks from the Suns and 18-year-old Australian 7-foot-3 center Rocco Zikarsky, the 45th pick in the draft, from the Lakers. Tennis: Sabalenka downs former doubles partner to power into Wimbledon quarters - Omni sports

World number one Aryna Sabalenka marched into the Wimbledon quarter-finals on Sunday as her former doubles partner Elise Mertens fell short of upsetting the US Open champion. Sabalenka has never reached a final at the All England Club but is the player to beat as the only one of the top six seeds in the women's draw still standing. The 27-year-old missed last year's Wimbledon due to injury and was banned in 2022 as part of a blanket suspension on Russian and Belarusian athletes due to the invasion of Ukraine. Sabalenka looks determined to make up for lost time and, just like in her third-round victory over Emma Raducanu, had to overcome a tough test from Mertens to progress 6-4, 7-6 (7/4). The pair won the 2019 US Open and 2021 Australian Open together as a doubles partnership, but Sabalenka has now won their last 10 meetings against each other in singles. "It's tough to play against someone you know quite close, it's tricky facing her," said Sabalenka. "I know how smart she is, I know she is going to fight until the very end. "She really challenged me today and I'm super happy with the win." A fast start from Sabalenka saw her stretch out to a 4-1 first set lead, only for Mertens to battle back and level at 4-4. The three-time Grand Slam winner responded in style, winning eight of the next 11 points, to take the set. Mertens got the early break in the second, but the world number 23 could not hold on. Sabalenka broke back to tie up the second set at 3-3 and after six straight holds of serve, the match was decided in a tie-break. Mertens again had the early advantage, but Sabalenka's blistering ground strokes forced the Belgian onto the back foot before a volleyed winner sealed victory in just over 90 minutes on court. Sabalenka faces Germany's Laura Siegemund in the last eight on Tuesday. "It's such a beautiful tournament. I always dreamed of winning it," she added of potentially claiming a first Wimbledon title. "I'm just trying to give my best and really hope for the best." Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:
