Freeport man charged with armed violence in Officer Krystal Rivera's ‘mistaken' fatal shooting
Charged is Adrian Rucker, the department announced said early Sunday. The charges came two days after he allegedly pointed a rifle at Officer Krystal Rivera and other tactical officers from the Gresham (6th) District, who had chased a person into a Chatham apartment while trying to conduct an investigatory stop.
Rivera, 36, was mistakenly shot and killed by another officer during the confrontation, police have said. Department investigators are still probing the attempted investigative stop near 82nd and Drexel that led up to the shooting
Rucker also faces felony counts of use of a firearm without a FOID card, possession of a fake ID and drug possession, police said. He was set to appear in bond court Sunday morning, according to a news release.
Rivera had been a police officer for four years and leaves behind a young daughter. A resident of the Irving Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side, she was the first city police officer to be killed in the line of duty this year. City leaders, police brass and friends described her as a hard worker with an independent streak who loved her job.
Around 10:08 p.m. Thursday, officers found and detained Rucker, 25, and a 26-year-old woman, also from Freeport, in a gated yard near an apartment building at 8215 S. Maryland Ave., according to police sources and court records.
Authorities had previously issued six arrest warrants for Rucker. According to police sources, those warrants are for criminal damage to property, theft under $500, and two alleged instances of domestic battery, all out of Stephenson County in northwestern Illinois.
He also had a warrant for aggravated identity theft out of northwest suburban Rolling Meadows and another for possession of fake identification out of Winnebago County, court records show. The woman had one active warrant, according to police sources.
According to Cook County Court records, Rucker was first arrested in April 2024 for alleged aggravated identity theft in Rolling Meadows. He was released pending trial, records show, but failed to appear for a June court date and Judge Ellen Beth Mandeltort issued an arrest warrant in July 2024.
The woman has not been charged with anything related to Rivera's death, but appeared in Cook County bond court Saturday regarding her arrest warrant out of Stephenson County, court records show. Her next court date is scheduled for Thursday.

Hira Zhahir, a Homeland Security Investigations public affairs officer, told USA TODAY July 28 that the department was not the lead agency on the arrest, saying, "HSI was assisting Contra Costa Sherriff's office with an arrest warrant." Footage taken on the plane and published by View from the Wing shows some of the officers wearing plainclothes and badges. It is unclear from the footage if the officers were masked. Shootout in Newark as U.S. marshals try to arrest fugitive in attempted murder case
A fugitive opened fire on U.S. marshals who tried to arrest him at a home in New Jersey on Monday, officials said. The suspect, a man wanted in an attempted murder case, was shot by Newark police during an hours-long standoff after he barricaded himself inside a home and began shooting at officers. Police said officers responded to Irvine Turner Boulevard at around 11 a.m. to assist U.S. marshals in arresting a man wanted for an attempted murder in Hillside. Neighbors said they saw the suspect barricade himself inside the home with a woman and child before the shootout started. "It was a wild shootout. They were shooting crazy," one woman said. "All of this started pulling up immediately, quick, fast," Tommy Easterling said. "The next thing you hear is pow, pow, pow, pow, while they're firing at the house, so, all the officers running up and down the street." U.S. marshals said the suspect fired first at police and officers returned fire. The suspect was shot by police and taken into custody sometime after 3 p.m. "He's no longer a threat to the public at this time," Mayor Ras Baraka said. "By God's grace, nobody was injured, nobody was hurt, nobody was hit." The suspect was hospitalized in unknown condition, U.S. marshals said. The woman and her newborn were taken to the hospital, but were not injured, the woman's stepfather told CBS News New York. "Scary, because we don't know if anything happened to her or the baby," Kenneth Brown said. "They said they didn't get hurt." "He passed the baby out and they put him in the back of a cop car and they got the baby and the mother out the house," another witness said. New Jersey State Police will take over the investigation, Newark police said.

Chicago man charged with spray-painting anti-immigrant, antisemitic graffiti in Little Village
Chicago police charged a man who they said spray-painted anti-immigrant, antisemitic graffiti in Little Village earlier this month. Officers arrested Philip Dominguez, 38, of Chicago, on Saturday afternoon in the 2400 block of South Springfield Avenue. He was charged with five felony counts of hate crime/property, one felony count of criminal damage to property between $500 and $10,000, and five misdemeanor counts of criminal damage less than $500. Police said Dominguez was identified as the suspect who allegedly defaced multiple properties within the Little Village on July 19 and 20, in the 2700 block of West Cermak and the 2500 block of South Central Park. One of the vandalized properties included the Latinos Progresando Community Center, which provides services including immigration legal services and wellness programs.
