Court hears final testimonies in brutal Sibongile assault trial

The Citizen7 hours ago
The trial of six Sibongile men accused of the kidnapping and murder of Mzwanile Sibiya resumed in the Dundee Regional Court last week, drawing a packed gallery.
The accused — including a police officer, teacher, municipal worker, hospital employee, and two plumbers — were arrested on November 24, 2023. It is alleged that Sibiya and two others were kidnapped, assaulted with sticks and iron rods in public, and accused of theft. Sibiya later died from his injuries.
State prosecutor Mr SA Mncadi previously detailed the severe injuries sustained by one survivor, Siphesihle Msibi, who suffered multiple fractures and abrasions. A forensic report confirmed that Sibiya died from blunt force trauma.
During earlier bail hearings, Captain Norman Zwane confirmed that all six men were local residents and posed no flight risk. Bail was granted at R5000 each, under strict conditions.
This week, defence advocate Mdu Masuku continued cross-examining Zwane and Captain Nkosi regarding Msibi's statement. A trial-within-a-trial focused on discrepancies in Msibi's statement, which was taken while he was hospitalised at Madadeni Hospital.
The matter has been remanded to August 12 for closing arguments from both sides.

Heavy trucks, heavier fines: metro rakes in over R339k through reopened weighbridges

Heavy trucks, heavier fines: metro rakes in over R339k through reopened weighbridges The Akasia weighbridges have already generated over R339 500 in fines issued to overloaded trucks since their reintroduction into service this month. The weighbridges reopened on July 11 after more than a decade of inactivity. The Tshwane metro reactivated the two long-neglected municipal weighbridges to ensure road safety. This is also a decisive measure in cracking down on a long-standing culture of impunity in the freight and logistics industry. The facilities that used to be dormant and a symbol of administrative decay, are now frontlines in the metro's mission to reassert control over its crumbling road infrastructure. In just under two weeks of operation, the TMPD has used the weighbridges to identify and penalise freight operators whose overloading practices have long wreaked havoc on the metro's transport corridors. MMC for Community Safety Hannes Coetzee said these heavy-duty trucks, often overlooked due to a lack of enforcement capacity, contribute to road damage and heightened accident risks. 'The reactivation of the weighbridges represents a strategic turning point, not only from a law enforcement perspective, but in terms of restoring institutional trust. For TMPD officers, it's a morale boost and a return to functional policing. 'Today, they stand empowered, and we stand with them,' Coetzee added. For years, residents have watched roads deteriorate while witnessing little to no action against the vehicles responsible. The damage caused by overloaded trucks costs municipalities millions annually in repairs, as well as in lost economic productivity and public confidence. Beyond the immediate revenue in fines, the long-term impact could include improved road safety, longer-lasting infrastructure, and a more regulated freight environment. 'We will not allow your roads to be destroyed, your safety to be disregarded, or your municipality to be governed without consequence,' said Coetzee. Do you have more information about the story? 3 suspected poachers caught with rhino horn

Three suspected rhino poachers, aged between 34 and 50 years, were arrested in Paulpietersburg on Saturday, with two unlicensed rifles and a rhino horn in their possession. Zululand Police Cluster spokesperson, Captain Nkosie Gwala, said three men wearing masks entered a game reserve and accosted two security guards. After tying them up, they robbed them of a shotgun, an R5 assault rifle, and their cellphones. 'It is alleged that the trio proceeded to shoot a rhino and remove its horn. While busy with their criminal activity, they were distracted by an alarm that had been activated. They fled the scene, leaving the shotgun next to the rhino carcass.' Gwala added that police responded, but discovered the suspects had fled the game reserve. 'Police and private security personnel worked tirelessly throughout the day looking for the suspects. With assistance from community members, they were eventually arrested as they took refuge in the bush.' They will appear in Vryheid Magistrate's Court on charges of armed robbery, rhino poaching, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. Don't have the ZO app? Men's conference hopes to bolster positive masculinity in Montclair

THE Montclair Spiritual Crime Prevention (SCP) recently held an informative and engaging men's conference in observance of July being Men's Mental Health Month. Around 80 men braved the bad weather to attend the impactful talk. Also read: Montclair churches urged to take part in crime prevention measures Pastor Caleb Sookhoo, public relations officer of the spiritual crime prevention, said the conference brought together a panel of prominent speakers who tackled major issues facing men and communities in SA today. Speakers: Aidan David – CPF district chairperson Lieutenant Colonel Nkululeko Percival Kweyama – Men for Change Thembinkosi Ntombela – Department of Social Development. Advocate Vuyisile Mafuna – National Prosecuting Authority. Dr. Donovan Andrews – Thuthuzela Care Centre. Lieutenant Colonel Velu Perumal Moodley, Montclair police station's acting station commander and one of the co-keynote speakers, called on men to reclaim their role as protectors. 'We need to have a community that stands in unity. Men need to take the lead and lead with integrity,' he said. A highlight of the conference was the address by keynote speaker Ravi Naidoo, a former gang leader and ex-prisoner who was among the infamous Phoenix 5. A former death row prisoner who received a presidential pardon from Nelson Mandela, Naidoo delivered an emotional testimony of redemption and personal renewal that moved many in the audience. Also read: Woman stabbed to death in alleged domestic dispute in Yellowwood Park Sookhoo emphasised on the broader purpose of the conference, which was creating a safe space for men to process their trauma and reframe stories of masculinity. 'Boys don't cry is a proverb that we all have heard at some point in our lives. The problem with that statement is that it teaches boys who will become men not to process emotions in a healthy way. Points of trauma gets bottled up and negative emotions start to fester within us. Toxic masculinity needs to be addressed. Men cannot be ashamed of being men. Healthy masculinity is needed more than ever and we must teach our boys and men how to feel and take responsibility in a healthy manner,' he shared. A question-and-answer session enabled the audience to engage directly with the speakers, including Naidoo, in frank discussion about crime prevention, emotional wellness and the role of men in building safer communities. Pastor Sookhoo said the large turnout was indicator on the need for talks and more platforms like this. For more Southlands Sun news, follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
