We had 24 hours with a Chiron Super Sport – what would you have done? If your answer is drive at over 200mph on the autobahn and then join a public session at the Nürburgring then great minds think alike. The only spanner in our plan was the sheet rain falling when we arrived at the circuit. I decided to go out in the car anyway with a very wide-eyed Andy Wallace riding shotgun – especially when we snapped sideways and the windows filled with Armco. We managed to stay on the tarmac, barely, and with refrigerated tyres we struggled to keep pace with the diesel BMW 3 Series Compact in front. Head over to the Top Gear YouTube channel and you can watch the whole ordeal in glorious 4K. Advertisement - Page continues below
I'm a long way from being a racing driver. But how's this for a list of racing driver excuses? On the day life presented me with the chance to hit 250mph in a Chiron, it was too hot and humid for the W16 to make max power. The US spec petrol was low on octane, the wind was gusting on an active military runway (NASA's Cape Canaveral) that could be closed at any moment. Several runs were postponed. The engine baked in the summer heat. Time at the location was ultra tight. It came down to one attempt, one run, no second chances... and the Super Sport went and did it. A GPS verified 250mph, in worst-case scenario conditions, with a petrified driver. That's how easily a Bugatti hits record speeds. You might like
Ollie Marriage: warped speed I'd been going to Bruntingthorpe for years. A solid two miles of cold war runway that knew its time was up. Crumbling surface, weeds on the fringes, broken bits of aeroplane in the bushes. And yet somehow, the best place in the UK to go fast. But not 200mph fast. I'd wrung stuff out there so many times, had cars tapping the 155mph limiter, once had a TVR Tuscan off the dial at 210mph, only for the GPS trace to reveal the truth – 178mph. And then I sent a Veyron down its crusted runway. I remember the sense of rumbling power, the sheer force that kept building and building, and glancing down to see the needle sweep innocuously past 200mph barely beyond the halfway point. Tom Ford: eager to police A story well told by now, but a few years ago, I was tasked with picking up the Bugatti Veyron world record car from the factory and driving it across and down the Stelvio Pass. Tough job and all that. But it wasn't the autobahn-in-a-Veyron that turned out to be the focus, even though that's another story entirely. It was the ride I gave to the local Italian carabinieri who'd organised the road closures for TG. The back side of the Stelvio Pass is much more open and we only went for a quick 15 minute blast – but when we got back, the cop got out of the car, kissed the ground and cried. Loudly. We'd been down the – closed – single track road a little too fast for his constitution, apparently.
Jason Barlow: blade runner
The launch of the Bugatti Veyron was the hot ticket of 2005. Dogged by developmental issues and behind schedule, there were murmurings perhaps it was simply never going to happen. But here it was, at last. I covered it, and recall one of my colleagues – a well-known figure in the car mag world and an awesome driver – being uncharacteristically nervous as we boarded the helicopter that was taking us from Palermo to the venue, a medieval winery near Madonie.
He was right to be – we landed safely but on the next flight the pilot misjudged things and the tail rotor clipped a concrete outbuilding. Fortunately no one was hurt. And the car? Well it didn't miss a beat. The drama, it turned out, was elsewhere... See more on Supercars

Chelsea handed major Xavi Simons transfer boost as in-demand star REMOVES RB Leipzig from his social media

CHELSEA target Xavi Simons has removed all mention of RB Leipzig from his social media bio. Simons, 22, is wanted by the Blues and a verbal agreement is reportedly close to being struck. 1 The German club are demanding a fee of £60million and Chelsea are readying their first official bid. Amid the rumours, attacking midfielder Simons has deleted the fact he is an RB Leipzig player from his social media bio. It now only says he is an ambassador for charity Unicef and is sponsored by Puma. Posts of him wearing an RB Leipzig kit have not been taken down. Eagle-eyed fans have also spotted in recent days that he has begun following several Chelsea stars on Instagram like Liam Delap, Levi Colwill and Romeo Lavia. Fans reckon it is all a sign of him moving to Stamford Bridge before the window slams shut. A third commented: "It suggests he's either come to an agreement on personal terms or is basically there." Chelsea launch bid for £52m Ajax teen sensation Jorrel Hato | Transfers Exposed However, it has been reported that Chelsea need to get players off the books before they can complete the deal for Simons. Christopher Nkunku, Armando Broja, Tyrique George and Carney Chukwuemeka have all been offered as makeweights to the Bundesliga club. But RB Leipzig do not want any of their stars and would prefer a straight-up £60m fee. Simons is said to be working with agent Ali Barat, who has close ties to Chelsea.

Revealed: Chelsea 'edging closer' to £60m deal for Xavi Simons AND Man United star - but exits from Stamford Bridge are also expected

Chelsea are reportedly edging closer to a deal for RB Leipzig's Xavi Simons, with the Blues expected to submit an official bid soon. The 22-year-old midfielder, who was once a wonderkid at Barcelona, is likely to leave the Bundesliga club this summer after they failed to secure Champions League football. Talks have been progressing well between Chelsea and Leipzig representatives over a deal, with a verbal agreement 'almost done', according to German journalist Florian Plettenberg. But Chelsea are thought to be holding off submitting their first bid for the £60million-rated attacker while they try to offload more players. Enzo Maresca and club officials are meanwhile weighing up an offer for Argentine winger Alejandro Garnacho, who is set to leave Manchester United after a fallout with Ruben Amorim. The 21-year-old has reportedly 'made Chelsea his priority this summer' after previously holding talks over a switch in January. Any deal for Xavi Simons is believed to be independent from negotiations with United over Garnacho. Deals for both players may not be complete until later in the window however, as Chelsea try to free-up room in what has become a bloated frontline. They've already offloaded Jadon Sancho, who returned to Man United following the end of his loan, and Noni Madueke but deals for the exits of Christopher Nkunku and Raheem Sterling are yet to be finalised. Club officials are also said to be open to offers for striker Nicolas Jackson, who had been the subject of interest from the Red Devils earlier in the window. Chelsea insist they are in no rush to sell, and value Jackson, who they signed two years ago for £32m, at £100m despite the search to find an upgrade. Attacking midfielder Joao Felix also completed a move away from the club, joining his Portuguese team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo at Al Nassr this week in a deal which could rise to £43m. Despite their interest in Garnacho and Simons, Chelsea have already strengthened their squad in attacking areas this summer, with Joao Pedro and Liam Delap making their debuts in the Club World Cup. They activated a £30m release clause in Delap's Ipswich Town contract earlier in the window before splashing out £60m to bring Pedro in from Brighton. Any deal for Simons is thought to be independent of Chelsea's interest in Garnacho Any new recruits will join a star-studded frontline at Stamford Bridge already including Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro Exciting young winner Jamie Gittens also joined from Borussia Dortmund in a deal worth £55m, while highly-rated Brazilian teenager Estevao will arrive from Palmeiras for £29m. The new recruits will no-doubt face competition for their places when they arrive in west London however, with Maresca's side already boasting the likes of Cole Palmer and Pedro Neto. The Blues will be making their return to the Champions League next season after securing a fourth-placed finish last term.

Advertisement - Article continues below But even if you're not a business user there's plenty to like – plus, the A6 undercuts its nearest competitors by some distance. Right now, the A6 Sportback e-tron is around £170 cheaper than its big rival, the BMW i5. This deal from via the Auto Express Find a Car service, sees you taking the keys for just £478.46 a month, while the equivalent i5 is over £645 a month under the same terms. Here, this two-year deal requires a £6,091.56 initial payment, while mileage is limited to 5,000 a year. Should you require more, you'll need to fork out an extra £29.57 a month for 8,000 miles a year. You might assume that at this price this deal would be for the entry-level Sport, but that's not the case. Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below Desirable S line trim is the name of the game here, so on top of the Sport's fancy customisable LED welcome lights, illuminated Audi badge at the rear, twin screens with 3D mapping and wireless phone charging, you get a sportier looking exterior, privacy glass and sports seats with the Audi 'S' logo embossed in them, plus other goodies. It does come with the entry-level powertrain, though, but that's no cause for complaint as it's an 83kWh battery pack with a claimed range of 382 miles. We've found the A6 to be not far off its claimed figures, while a peak charging speed of 270kW gives a 10-to-80-per-cent top-up in just 21 minutes, if you find a powerful enough charger. The A6 e-tron has a real high-quality ambience – whether it's the interior or the ride comfort, it feels plush and expensive.
