Japan: Tokushima prefecture Governor eyes stronger India-Japan partnership

India Gazette04-06-2025
Tokushima [Japan], June 4 (ANI): Masazumi Gotoda, Governor of Tokushima Prefecture in Japan, shared his vision for strengthening international relations, particularly with India, to promote exports and attract skilled foreign talent.
Located on Shikoku Island, one of Japan's four main islands, Tokushima has emerged as the most proactive of the island's four prefectures in advancing global engagement.
Governor Gotoda, who took office two years ago after serving 23 years in Japan's House of Representatives, has introduced bold administrative reforms aimed at transforming the prefecture. Among his first initiatives was the establishment of the International Affairs Office, a division he oversees directly.
'Deepening overseas relations is not just a policy--it's a necessity in a rapidly changing Japanese society,' said Governor Gotoda in an exclusive interview with ANI.
Tokushima's ties with India are already robust, with several major Japanese firms operating in the country. Otsuka Pharmaceutical and its subsidiaries have set up facilities in Rajasthan and Gujarat, while the well-known LED manufacturer Nichia Corporation operates in Gurgaon.
Shikoku Kakoki, another company from the region, exports shelf-stable, paper-packed tofu -- a unique food product that does not require refrigeration, showcasing Tokushima's innovation in food processing.
Facing Japan's demographic challenges such as declining population and workforce, Governor Gotoda emphasised the need for innovative governance and international collaboration.
A strong advocate of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education, he pointed to the success of Kamiyama Marugoto College, where nearly 90 per cent of students come from outside the prefecture.
'This institution is a symbol of our commitment to cultivating future-ready talent,' he said. Governor Gotoda is also championing the acceptance of foreign workers to address labour shortages.
Last year, Tokushima recorded Japan's highest increase in both the rate and amount of the minimum wage.
He believes this competitive wage growth will help attract high-level professionals and visitors from India. 'We are committed to creating an environment where international talent can thrive,' he said. Tokushima is not only progressive in policy but also rich in tradition and natural beauty.
The prefecture is home to Awa Odori, Japan's iconic dance festival, as well as sacred pilgrimage routes and lush landscapes. Governor Gotoda's office reflects his pride in local culture, adorned with Tokushima's specialty products.
'Promoting our cultural assets through global partnerships is a vital part of our strategy,' he added. In his concluding remarks, Governor Gotoda expressed hope that India and Tokushima will forge even stronger ties in the coming years--anchored in shared values of innovation, tradition, and mutual prosperity. Hibiki Presents ‘Hibiki Making Harmony'

In an exquisite showcase of Japanese craftsmanship and cultural artistry, Hibiki, the heart of the House of Suntory unveiled its signature experience, Hibiki Making Harmony, at Modernist, Four Seasons, Mumbai. Bringing alive the Japanese philosophy of harmony and nature, Hibiki Making Harmony offered a sensorial journey that reflected the essence of Hibiki – the paragon of Japanese luxury spirit. Hibiki celebrates the Harmony of Japanese People and Nature brought to life through Monozukuri – Japanese Craftsmanship. From the balanced blend of rare malt and grain spirits to the design of its 24-faceted bottle inspired by Japan's seasons, every element paid tribute to the artistry and precision that defines Hibiki. Hibiki Making Harmony: An exquisite showcase of Japanese craftsmanship and cultural artistry by the House of Suntory Anchored in the poetic philosophy of Kacho Fugetsu, a reverence for the beauty of nature and the changing seasons, Hibiki Making Harmony offered more than an event; it embodied Hibiki's nuanced blend of time-honored tradition and modern elegance. Drawing inspiration from Kokimurasaki, the deep royal purple once reserved for Japanese nobility, the evening reflected the brand's enduring commitment to refinement, intentionality, and craft. Guests were immersed in a series of thoughtfully curated installations that captured the transient beauty of Japan's 24 seasons, with the heart of the experience being The Hibiki Serving Ritual-a meditative ceremony that elevated the experience using hand-carved ice and seasonal elements. The ritual paid homage to the cyclical nature of time, inviting guests to pause, reflect, and connect deeply with the essence of Japanese harmony. 'With Hibiki Making Harmony, we're not just showcasing Hibiki – we're deepening its role as a symbol of Japanese luxury and cultural storytelling,' said Rishi Walli, Senior Director, Marketing, Suntory Global Spirits. Together, they highlighted how Hibiki brings diverse spirits into a seamless, refined blend. From malt spirits sourced from Yamazaki and Hakushu to grain spirits from Chita, and maturation in American white oak, Spanish oak, and Mizunara casks, each expression revealed a layer of complexity and harmony that defines the Hibiki blend. Bridging sensory delight with cultural refinement, the experience seamlessly flowed from palate to presentation. The event was attended by notable industrialists and high net-worth individuals such as Ashish Kapur, Manoj Adlakha – Founder & CEO of RedBeryl along with leading entrepreneurs, collectors, and spirits aficionados, making it an evening of refined conversations and shared appreciation for Japanese artistry. Who will be next Vice President? Harivansh, Nitish, Arif among in race to succeed Jagdeep Dhankhar

The Election Commission of India said on Wednesday that it has already begun the process of electing a new Vice President. The announcement comes two days after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from the post, opening the contest for his successor. Dhankhar, 74, assumed office in August 2022. His five-year term would end in August 2027. Dhankhar's abrupt resignation means a new Vice President has not been elected within the next two months. While the Election Commission has yet to announce the poll schedule, sources say the country will likely have a new Vice President by the end of August. Dhankhar's resignation has set off a wave of speculation about his potential successor. One of the past governors, as Dhankhar was of West Bengal before taking the vice president's office, or a seasoned organisational leader or one of the Union ministers – the BJP has a large pool of leaders to choose from for the position. Dhankhar's resignation comes as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is in the process of electing its new national president, replacing JP Nadda. According to some reports, the saffron party may get a new president after August 15. Whenever the election happens, the ruling National Democratic Alliance and the opposition INDIA bloc will field their candidates for the top post. The electorate for the Vice Presidential election comprises all members of both Houses of Parliament, using a proportional representation system via single transferable vote. The MPs will cast a single transferable vote with a secret ballot. The electoral college currently has 788 MPs- 588 in Lok Sabha and 245 in Rajya Sabha. The ruling BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has a majority in the electorate, which means the NDA candidate will be the next Vice President of India At present, the effective strength of both Houses is 786, and the winning candidate will require 394 votes, considering that all eligible voters exercise their franchise. In the Lok Sabha, the BJP-led NDA enjoys the support of 293 of the 542 members. The ruling alliance has the support of 129 members in the Rajya Sabha, assuming that the nominated members vote in support of the NDA nominee, which has an adequate strength of 240. So, overall, the ruling alliance has the support of 422 members in both the houses as against the requirement of 394. Among the frontrunners from the NDA camp is Harivansh Narayan Singh, a Janata Dal (United) MP who has been the Rajya Sabha deputy chairman since 2020. Harivansh has been temporarily filling the role of Rajya Sabha chair until the election of the next Vice President of India. In the 2020 Deputy Speaker Elections, Harivansh defeated Opposition candidate and RJD leader Manoj Jha. Nitish Kumar's name has also been floating around for the post. However, the JD-U chief will have to leave the CM chair, months before the elections, so Kumar seems an unlikely candidate. Yet, NDA ally Upendra Kushwaha suggested that Nitish Kumar step down as CM to make way for the next generation. Manoj Sinha will complete five years as the Lieutenant Governor (LG) of Jammu and Kashmir this August, fuelling speculation about his candidature as Vice President. Sinha is a former MP, Union minister and an old BJP hand from Uttar Pradesh's Purvanchal region. Two Union Ministers — Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Health Minister JP Nadda — have also been suggested as contenders. Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has also emerged as a contender for some. To be a VP, Tharoor, who has an uneasy relationship with the Congress party, will have to leave his Lok Sabha MP seat. Dhankhar's abrupt resignation has set off a wave of speculation about his potential successor. Bihar Governor Arif Mohammad Khan is also counted in the list. A former Congress and Janata Dal MP, Khan left the Congress in 1986 over the Shah Bano case. Before Bihar, he was Governor of Kerala. Well, all these are speculations. Who knows, like in the past, the BJP will come up with a surprise pick. Until then, more names will be added to the list of frontrunners for Vice President of India.
