From nomadic life to international stage, Tamil Nadu puppeteer to perform in Moscow

The Hindu02-07-2025
A traditional puppeteer (Thol Paavai Koothu) artist, whose ancestors migrated from Maharashtra six generations ago and who lived an itinerant life until he was 19, is now set to perform in Russia at 'Bharat Utsav-Festival of India' to be held from July 5 to 13 at Manezhnaya square in Moscow.
B. Muthuchandran, 50, from Thovalai in Kanniyakumari district has been performing puppetry shows for the past 31 years and has been selected as one of the four arts groups from Tamil Nadu to perform in the festival happening in Moscow. Notably, Mr. Muthuchandran and his brother B. Muthukumaran, 46, are the only ones representing southern Tamil Nadu for the event.
'Our family had no permanent address until I was 19,' Mr. Muthuchndran told The Hindu. 'We lived a nomadic life, one month we would set up our tent to perform the koothu in Tenkasi, the next in Tirunelveli and then in Udangudi. Our livelihood depended entirely on the amount collected during our shows.'
After the passing of their father, Mr. Muthuchandran and his brother continued the family tradition, performing at temple festivals, and village events for their survival. A major breakthrough came when they began amalgamating traditional stories such as the Ramayana, Nalla Thangaal and Harichandra Puranam with relevant elements such as social awareness on plastic usage, helmet safety, women empowerment and contemporary humour.
In recognition of his contribution to the folk art, Mr. Muthuchnadran was honored with the prestigious Kalaimamani award by the Tamil Nadu government in 2018.
Thol Paavai literally means 'doll made with skin.' These puppets are crafted using goat skin, painted with vibrant colours and humorous expressions. The goat skin is carefully treated before sketching, and natural dyes made from cactus fruit, pipal tree buds and charcoal are used in the colouring process, which is economically suitable for them.
Folklorist A.K. Perumal says the artists originally migrated from Maharashtra and still speak Marathi at home. 'Although only three to four families from Kanniyakumari continue to practice puppetry, artists like Muthuchandran have evolved the tradition by incorporating humour and relevant social themes into their story telling.'
Following his performance in California in 2023, Mr. Muthuchandran emerged in the radar of the Tamil Nadu Department of Arts and Culture.
Speaking to The Hindu, B. Hemanathan, Deputy Director (Art Education and Schemes), Department of Arts and Culture, said the rural and folk arts were identified through regional festivals such as Kumari Kalai Thiruvizha and Courtallam Saral Vizha across the State. The government was taking various measures to protect and promote the traditional art forms by organising various programmes throughout the year.

At Mr Ong in Park Hyatt, try mee goreng, mantou buns and bean curd cheesecake

In the plush calmness of a luxury hotel, replicating the energy of a hawker stall from Singapore might seem challenging, but not impossible. Mr Ong - The Flavours of Singapore by Park Hyatt has orderly outdoor seating by a serene lily pond, but also has an open kitchen where the chefs are hard at work over flaming woks, grills and a bar, and upbeat music playing over speakers. While the restaurant threw open its doors post-pandemic with a menu focussed on Singaporean cuisine, a menu refresh less than a month ago means there is now a bevy of dishes from Singaporean, Malaysian, Vietnamese and Indonesian cuisine. 'While we began with the intent of bringing authentic Singaporean flavours to Chennai, the menu now focusses on South-East Asian cuisine. Our vision was to replicate a hawker-stall style atmosphere and menu here; something rare in a luxury hotel setting,' says Pragit Parameswaran, marketing communications manager, Park Hyatt, Chennai Chef Balaji Natarajan says there is much he is excited about in their new menu. 'We have mushroom stuffed mantou buns shaped like a mushroom, a delicate lace turmeric roti jala that is served with a chicken or a pumpkin curry, and a bean curd cheesecake made of silken tofu and cream cheese,' he says. 'We use a lot of fresh turmeric, both large chillies as well as the smaller bird's eye chillies, as well as ingredients native to these regions including torch ginger flowers we get from Malaysia in our cooking,' he explains. We begin our meal with the satay ayam, and dip our well marinated chicken skewers into some thick and sweet peanut sauce. Warm bowls of comforting malacca laksa follow, with noodles, chicken pieces, prawns and a jammy egg drenched in a coconutty soup. The mushroom shaped pillowy cendawan baos are generously stuffed with minced mushrooms tossed in chilli oil. For the main course, we opt for a true hawker favourite, greasy and flavourful mee goreng or wok tossed noodles that come packed with vegetables and mushrooms. The caramel banana crunchy peanut ice cream for dessert comes with an array of fixings, from honey brittle and nuts to a caramel sauce you can drizzle on your scoop. As diners get to experience the new menu, there are more popups in store at Mr Ong, as well as a sober bar being planned, to function alongside its regular bar for the non-drinkers to have a good variety of options as well. A selection of dishes from Mr Ong's new menu will also feature as a part of a set menu to be made available during Singa60, from August 1 to 10. Organized by Hindu Tamil Thisai in collaboration with The Hindu and Business Line, Singa60 offers a rich tapestry of events showcasing vibrant partnerships between India and Singapore through a curated program centered on Commerce, Culture, and Cuisine. The set menu at Mr Ong for Singa60 is priced at ₹3,000 plus taxes for a non-vegetarian meal and ₹2,600 for a vegetarian meal. Mr Ong is at Park Hyatt, Velachery Road, Guindy.

Alia Bhatt Enjoys A Burger And Jigsaw Puzzle In London: 'Good Vibes Only'

Recently, Alia dropped a beautiful video featuring herself and partial glimpses of Ranbir. Alia Bhatt is still not over from her vacation. She has shared another delicious sneak peek into her vacation vibes by sharing a photo of her mouth-watering burger meal. Alia, along with Ranbir Kapoor and Raha Kapoor, were in London for a vacation earlier this month. Taking to her Instagram stories, Alia Bhatt shared a photo in which she is seen eatinga burger while enjoying the view. She even shared a puzzle photo, which we guess is done by Raha. 'good vibes only', read the caption. The Gangubai Kathiawadi actor, who often shares updates from her daily life, limited her social media presence in London. But looks like she saved the best for later. Alia dropped a beautiful video featuring herself and partial glimpses of Ranbir. Holding her husband's hand, Alia looked elated as she flaunted her many outfits from the vacation, twirling in the video. What didn't go unnoticed was how happy she looked. In London, the couple posed for photos with fans. On July 14, the family was photographed at a private airport in Mumbai. They didn't greet the paps stationed outside the airport and quickly hopped inside the car. Paps also avoided clicking front-facing pictures of Raha after the celebrity couple requested them not to click their daughter following Saif Ali Khan's stabbing incident earlier this year. Ranbir Kapoor was seen holding onto Raha tightly in his arms at the Mumbai airport. The two-year-old had her back towards the camera. The Ramayana actor wore his signature cap, accompanied by wife Alia Bhatt at the airport. She was seen wearing a denim jacket. The celebrity couple had their sunglasses on. Meanwhile, Ranbir Kapoor's London visit comes just days after the teaser for his highly anticipated movie, Ramayana, was released. The teaser began with the origins – the trinity of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva who govern the world. Featuring impressive animation, the video then introduced characters from Ramayana – Lord Rama portrayed by Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi as Sita, and Yash as Ravana. The film also stars Sunny Deol, Ravi Dubey, and others. Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt are currently shooting for their second film together, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Love & War, after Brahmastra in 2022. The film also stars Vicky Kaushal. It is reportedly set for release in March 2026. First Published: July 25, 2025, 15:07 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. A.R. Rahman teams up with OpenAI's Sam Altman for AI-driven musical metaverse ‘Secret Mountain'

Music composer A.R. Rahman has announced a collaboration with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman for his upcoming AI-based project Secret Mountain. Rahman shared the news on social media, posting a photo with Altman and stating that they discussed ways to use artificial intelligence to support Indian creators and address long-term challenges through technology. The project, described as a virtual global band, is being developed as a metaverse-based musical platform. In a caption accompanying the post, Rahman said, 'We discussed Secret Mountain, our virtual global band, and how to empower and uplift Indian minds to use AI tools to address generational challenges and lead the way forward.' Rahman first introduced the concept of Secret Mountain in a video released in February 2024. The animated preview featured a fictional character named Luna who travels into a virtual world and interacts with various musical personas drawn from different cultures. The video suggested that the project would focus on using storytelling, music, and digital technology to explore cultural connections in an immersive setting. Speaking previously about the use of AI in music, Rahman has said that while artificial intelligence can serve as a starting point in the creative process, it cannot replace the emotional depth or originality that human composers bring. 'AI can be a starting point,' he said, 'but the human element remains irreplaceable.' Secret Mountain is expected to bring together musicians and mentors from multiple countries, including India, China, Ireland, and regions of Africa. The initiative aims to provide a collaborative and technology-driven environment for global music exchange. Rahman is also currently working on the score for Ramayana, an upcoming film directed by Nitesh Tiwari, alongside composer Hans Zimmer. Further details about Secret Mountain, including a launch timeline, are yet to be confirmed.
