Higher LME Price (+20% YoY) and higher premiums (+38% YoY) drove strong top-line performance, increased production costs significantly compressed EBITDA resulting in lower bottom-line.
Market Fundamentals [Based on Market Intelligence]
Global Market Demand (+2% YoY)
Global Economy: Started the year with positive momentum, showing continued growth in commodity demand and signs of easing inflation across major economies. However, the future impact of tariffs on commodity markets remains uncertain. Tariffs: Increased market uncertainty has significantly affected both London Metal Exchange (LME) prices and physical premiums. If trade tensions ease, this could be good for the market. North America: The US economy demonstrated good performance in Q1 driven by consumer spending and a recovering housing market. This domestic performance contributed to a 1% YoY increase in demand. China: Recognising global uncertainties, Chinese policymakers announced measures to facilitate a transition from exports to domestic consumption. As a result, the property sector stabilised with improved new home sales and a reduction in inventory. This internal focus translated into tangible results with aluminium consumption showing 1% year-over-year (YoY) increase. Middle East: Demand grew by 3% YoY, primarily driven by higher consumption in Saudi Arabia (+4% YoY) and Bahrain & UAE (+3% YoY).
Europe: Despite a slight easing in inflation, overall consumption remained flat.
Global Market Supply (+1% YoY)
Global aluminium supply market growth was very limited. While some smelters were ramping-up production, these increases were largely offset by the impact of closures that took place at the end of last year. China: Supply rose by a modest 1% YoY as it's nearing its self-imposed production capacity ceiling of 45 million metric tonnes, making any significant net supply growth from China unlikely. Europe: Production saw a marginal increase of 1% YoY driven by gradual return to full operations of German smelters. North America: Production contracted by 3% YoY primarily due to a 2% YoY decline from Canadian smelters Middle East: Supply down by 1% YoY.
Market Balance: As Chinese production is growing at a slower pace than consumption (China continues to hold to its 45 million tonnes annual target), the global market shows a surplus when including China (+253,000 MT) and a deficit when excluding China (-265,000 MT).
LME Price & Premiums
LME Price averaged US$2,629/t in Q1 2025 (+20% YoY) and was supported by low global inventories of 459,000 MT (down by 17% YoY) and modest supply growth. However, towards the end of Q1, LME prices started to decline given changes in trade policies.
Premiums: Following the implementation of tariffs in the US, regional premiums surged by 77% YoY. DDP Rotterdam and MJP premiums up by 17% and 153% YoY respectively mainly due to depletion of inventories and geopolitical factors.

Aluminium Market: Trade Turbulence Casts Shadow Over Short-Term Outlook [Based on Market Intelligence]
Market Uncertainty Persists: LME prices dropped rapidly by Q1-end 2025 due to strengthening US dollar and growing concerns about near-term economic activity as trade tensions escalated. Trump's tariffs and the US dollar were key drivers of aluminium price movements, and market sentiment remains fragile due to volatile US trade policies. Demand Outlook: High tariffs threaten demand despite initial positive indicators. While extreme US tariffs, especially on China, are likely to persist, they will likely cause global inflationary pressure. Supply Conditions: Modest growth in Chinese aluminium output expected due to smelters' restarts and ramp-ups. Production outside China will also likely increase with capacity expansions in India and Russia. Premium Outlook: MJP Q2 settled at US$182/t (down by US$46/t from Q1). European premiums declines are due to anticipated redirection of US-bound metal. Midwest premium is expected to eventually increase to attract more metal to the US.
LME Price Forecast: Near-term LME prices are projected to range between US$2,300/t and US$2,450/t.

Iran Plans To Abandon GPS & Replace
Recent reports in Mideast regional media say that Iran is actively exploring abandoning GPS technology and instead adopting China's main navigation satellite system, BeiDou. Such a drastic change can't be accomplished overnight, however, as the world's dominant system (GPS) has long been embedded in Iranian industries and technology. US-based and Western technology firms dominate such telecoms and mapping tech infrastructure, and the June 12-day conflict saw Iranian vessels in the Persian Gulf experience repeated disruptions of GPS signal – and it's believed the system was utilized by Israel and the US to track and target Iranian officials. Iranian officials were already worried about reliance on GPS even before the war, but the conflict has only heightened existing concerns – enough to race for alternatives. After all, the Global Positioning System (GPS) was literally an invention of the US Department of Defense in the 1970s and is currently run under the Space Force. 'At times, disruptions are created on this [GPS] system by internal systems, and this very issue has pushed us toward alternative options like BeiDou,' Ehsan Chitsaz, deputy communications minister, told state media earlier this month. He confirmed that the government is working on a plan switch transportation, agriculture and the internet from GPS to China's BeiDou, according to Al Jazeera . The same report emphasizes that 'Since 2013, whistleblowers and media investigations have revealed how various Western technologies and schemes have enabled illicit surveillance and data gathering on a global scale – something that has worried governments around the world.' It's also only a natural trajectory that Iran would become increasingly more trusting of tech based out of China, India, or Russia – as opposed to that of the United States and Israel's close Western allies. Russia, for its part, hopes its national or regional satellite navigation system GLONASS can spread, especially among allied populations. As for BeiDou, it's seen as going hand and hand as a major tech tool with President Xi's ambitious Belt & Road Initiative (BRI) which has been making inroads across Asia and Africa. Al Jazeera aptly concludes in its report that 'Iran's possible shift to BeiDou sends a clear message to other nations grappling with the delicate balance between technological convenience and strategic self-defence: The era of blind, naive dependence on US-controlled infrastructure is rapidly coming to an end.' 'Nations can no longer afford to have their military capabilities and vital digital sovereignty tied to the satellite grid of a superpower they cannot trust,' the report adds. Indeed the Edward Snowden NSA leaks of many years ago also confirmed that this trend has been a problem for decades, and more recently Israeli companies have also made huge leaps in developing hidden spyware embedded in what's presented as civilian products and software. Stock markets rise
Stock markets in the United States and Europe rose yesterday as investors turned their attention from trade deals to a slew of company results falling this week. New York's tech-heavy Nasdaq and the broad S&P 500 indices moved confidently higher out of the gate, though the Dow was struggling. London's FTSE, the CAC 40 in Paris and the DAX in Frankfurt were all trading higher, reversing dives a day earlier. The picture in Asia was mixed, though, with Shanghai closing higher but Hong Kong and Tokyo losing ground. The transatlantic bounce was different from Monday, when European indices closed in the red and US ones were muddled in the wake of the EU-US trade deal announced on the weekend. 'The fact that markets have bounced back today suggests investors have been buoyed by hopes that the US-EU trade accord might draw a line under recent uncertainty, offering European businesses a clearer path forward,' said Fawad Razaqzada, market analyst at Still, on the currency market, the euro extended losses against the dollar, indicating that European disgruntlement at the trade deal had not gone away. The euro has 'suffered a nasty battering... as investors questioned just how positive the US-EU trade deal was for the European Union', said David Morrison, senior market analyst at Trade Nation. Earning reports Tuesday's focus was now more on company earning reports that are raining down this week in the United States and Europe, with tech heavyweights in the spotlight. Meta and Microsoft were to give results on Wednesday, with Amazon and Apple following on Thursday. The massive investment race in artificial intelligence was informing much of the action. Bloomberg News reported that Microsoft was in talks to keep access to OpenAI technology, even if the ChatGPT maker achieves AI that goes beyond human intelligence. Meta, meanwhile, has opened its pockets wide to grab AI talent -- including several OpenAI employees -- to build out its own artificial intelligence operations. Amazon and Apple are also competing, though the latter is seen to be badly lagging so far. Thomas Mathews, a markets analyst at Capital Economics, said a continued rally in US stocks 'may depend especially heavily on 'big tech' profit results continuing to paint a positive picture, especially around AI'. 'With the worst of the risks around trade seemingly fading, we suspect there are fewer remaining obstacles to further investor enthusiasm for AI and its implications for US companies,' he said. London's FTSE was boosted in particular by heavyweight AstraZeneca after the drugmaker posted strong earnings. Shares in eyewear giant EssilorLuxottica jumped more than 6% on strong second-quarter results, topping the Paris CAC 40 index. Swedish music streamer Spotify's shares slid 7% after it reported an operating profit that far missed its target. The US Federal Reserve, meanwhile, was to begin Tuesday its two-day policy meeting under increasing pressure from President Donald Trump to slash rates, despite stubbornly high inflation. Oil prices extended Monday's rise after Trump shortened a deadline for Russia to end its war in Ukraine to August 7 or 9, following which he vowed to sanction countries buying its crude.
