The Lusail International Circuit (LIC) and University of Doha for Science & Technology (UDST) have announced a landmark partnership aimed at creating exceptional opportunities for students while enhancing operational capabilities at Qatar's premier motorsport venue.
The collaboration will support Qatar's Vision 2030 by fostering education, innovation, and youth employment in the sports and events management sector, particularly for prestigious motorsport events including Formula 1, MotoGP, and World Endurance Championship races.
'This partnership represents a significant step forward in developing local talent for Qatar's growing sports and events industry,' said Abdulrahman Al Mannai, President of Qatar Motor & Motorcycle Federation (QMMF) and Lusail International Circuit. 'By working closely with UDST, we can provide students with unparalleled hands-on experience while strengthening our operational capabilities for world-class events.'
H.E. Dr. Salem Al Naemi, President of University of Doha for Science and Technology emphasized the importance of this collaboration stating: 'This strategic partnership with Lusail International Circuit marks a milestone in advancing applied education at the University of Doha for Science and Technology. By bridging academic knowledge with real-world experience in the field of motorsports, we are equipping our students with the skills and competencies required to excel in innovation-driven and technically demanding industries. The partnership includes several key initiatives:
A structured internship program providing UDST students with practical experience across various LIC departments during major international events.

Marc fends off Alex Marquez for Dutch MotoGP sprint win
Agencies Assen (Netherlands) Marc Marquez bounced back from two crashes in practice to win the Dutch MotoGP sprint race on Saturday admitting his body would not have 'taken another fall'. The 32-year-old Spaniard started from the second row of the grid but rapidly seized control on his Ducati to ease to his ninth win in 10 sprint races so far this season. The six-time world champion's younger brother Alex Marquez (Ducati-Gresini) finished second with Italy's GB MotoGP winner Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia) third. Marquez's Ducati team-mate Italy's two-time world champion Francesco Bagnaia lost more ground in the title race, finishing fourth. 'I was not expecting to win starting from the second row but I had an excellent start and I focussed on being error-free throughout the race,' said Marquez. 'I am relieved because I think my body would not have taken another fall.' Fabio Quartararo will start from pole on Sunday, after posting the fastest time in qualifying, but the 26-year-old French Yamaha rider will hope for a better return than he got in the sprint. The 2021 world champion -- who has failed to convert his previous three pole positions into victories in the MotoGPs this season -- crashed four laps from the finish whilst in fourth spot. 'On Sunday I will have new tyres, because it will be hotter than today,' said the Frenchman. Bagnaia -- seeking a fourth successive victory on the track reverentially referred to as the 'Cathedral of Speed' -- and other riders will entertain some hope they can deny Marquez victory in Sunday's race. The Spaniard's Ducati lacked grip at the back and he appeared to be ill at ease on sector three of the circuit. 'I did have difficulties on corner 11,' he conceded. Marquez moved on to 282 points and extended his lead in the standings to 43 points over Alex with Bagnaia 117 points adrift.

MoM, UDST ink MoUto enhance food security cooperation
QNA Doha The Ministry of Municipality (MoM), represented by the Agriculture Affairs Department and the Food Security Department, signed on Monday a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST) to cooperate in the fields of training, capacity building, and scientific research in support of Qatar's food security. The signing ceremony was attended by Minister of Municipality HE Abdullah bin Hamad bin Abdullah Al Attiyah and the President of UDST Dr Salem bin Nasser Al Nuaimi. The MoU, signed by the Director of the Department of Agricultural Affairs at the Ministry Yousef Khaled Al Khulaifi and the Director of the Partnerships and Engagement Directorate at UDST Najla Al Naimi, aligns with Qatar's efforts to achieve the National Food Security Strategy 2030 and implement the Ministry of Municipality Strategy 2024 - 2030, particularly in enhancing food security and self-sufficiency. Al Khulaifi noted that the agreement aims to develop national competencies and support scientific and applied research in agriculture and food security, contributing to the achievement of the objectives of the National Food Security Strategy 2030, as well as Qatar's goals for sustainability and self-reliance. For her part, Al Naimi said that the signing of the MoU represents a strategic alignment between the Ministry and the University, fostering fruitful cooperation based on the exchange of expertise and the integration of efforts to prepare for future challenges through knowledge, applied research, technology, and capacity-building. The MoU falls within a broader initiative to build national capabilities in agriculture and food security, encourage innovation and applied research, address future food security challenges, and enhance the skills of professionals working in this vital sector. It outlines several areas of cooperation, including developing specialized training programmes to qualify national cadres in agriculture, livestock, and fisheries, supporting the implementation of applied research and scientific studies aimed at improving the efficiency of local agricultural production, and exchanging knowledge and expertise in sustainable agricultural policy and strategy development. The agreement also includes training university students through field placements to prepare a new generation of specialists capable of contributing effectively to Qatar's food security system, as well as utilizing research facilities of both parties to develop joint projects aligned with national priorities. This partnership reflects the commitment of both the Ministry of Municipality and UDST to support the Qatar National Vision 2030 by promoting innovation, building a diversified and sustainable economy, and achieving food security through knowledge, research, and qualified human resources. Dr Salem bin Nasser Al Nuaimi stated that the signing of the MoU crowns years of ongoing cooperation with the Ministry of Municipality. He emphasised the University's commitment to instilling the concept of food security in its students through applied programs that encourage innovation and the use of scientific research to develop sustainable solutions. He highlighted the University's contributions to national food security through innovations such as smart irrigation systems, greenhouse farming, food waste composting, and soil enhancement adapted to Qatar's climate.

F1 owners allowed by European Commission to acquire MotoGP series
Berlin: Formula One owners Liberty Media have been allowed by the European Commission to buy the MotoGP world championship, currently owned by Dorna Sports SL. Liberty announced the take over of 86% of Dorna in April 2024 and on Monday the European Commission approved the deal, valued at $4.2 billion. 'The European Commission has unconditionally approved the proposed acquisition of Dorna Sports SL ('Dorna') by Liberty Media Corporation ('Liberty Media') under the EU Merger Regulation. The Commission concluded that the merger would not raise competition concerns in the European Economic Area ('EEA'),' the Commission said in a statement. Even though Liberty Media will own the commercial rights to the two top racing series competition in the allocation of broadcasting rights will not be restricted. Following an investigation, the Commission considered that F1 and MotoGP 'are not close competitors for the licensing of broadcasting rights for sports content.' (dpa)
