T'puram: Chadayamangalam excise range officers arrested a man with 1.25kg of ganja during a patrol at Kadakkal on Tuesday night.
According to excise officials, the arrested person Sachin, 31, an executive committee member of the Congress party in Kummil, attempted to flee upon spotting the excise team but was caught after a brief chase.
Officers discovered the illegal substance during a search of his bag.
"There were complaints against him even before, as he was the key supplier of the drug in the locality. During the raids last time, he escaped narrowly, but was under surveillance," Chadayamangalam excise inspector Rajesh A K said.
Authorities have seized the suspect's mobile phone to investigate potential connections to a larger drug network. While this marks Sachin's first arrest under the NDPS Act, officials noted previous intelligence about his involvement in
drug trafficking
.
Following his arrest, Sachin was produced before the court and charged under Section 22(b) II(b) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. He has since been remanded to custody.

Ranchi: The Enforcement Directorate on Friday raided multiple locations in Jharkhand as part of an ongoing alleged illegal sand mining and extortion linked money laundering investigation against former minister Yogendra Sao and his family members, official sources said. At least eight premises in Hazaribag and Ranchi were raided since early morning. The action is being undertaken as per the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the sources said. The raids pertains to an ongoing probe into allegations that substantial proceeds of crime were generated through activities such as extortion, illegal sand mining, and land grabbing, the sources said. Sao is a Congress leader and a former agriculture minister of the state. He was raised and questioned by the ED last year in a money laundering case that was being probed against his MLA daughter Amba Prasad.

The Jalandhar commissionerate police have arrested five persons and recovered 5.3kg of heroin and 2kg of opium from their possession. Accused Balbir is a habitual drug peddler, say police. (HT File) Commissioner of police Dhanpreet Kaur Randhawa said a crime branch team nabbed Amritsar resident Balbir Singh during a special operation in the Dashmesh Nagar area. 'Accused Balbir is a habitual drug peddler as one case under the NDPS act was registered against him in Amritsar city,' she said. Randhawa added that in a parallel operation, a team from the CIA staff, on routine patrolling in the Transport Nagar area, apprehended three drug peddlers, identified as Sushil Kumar of Tanda in Hoshiarpur, Mandeep Singh of Jalandhar and Gagandeep Singh of Ferozepur. The police team recovered 2kg opium from their possession. In another case, police seized 258gm of heroin and a country made pistol from the accused Harjinder Singh during special checking on Maqsudan road.

Two drug smugglers were caught and 1.5-kg ice drugs, 1-kg opium along with a car were seized from their possession, the Khanna police have said. Officials said the arrests came after cops came across one of them carrying 10-gm narcotic powder that led them to break the supply chain. Khanna police officials with the seized drugs. (HT Photo) The arrested accused have been identified as Vicky, 33, of Kartar Nagar of Khanna and Sukhman Singh alias Sunny, 27, of Satguru Ram Singh Avenue, Amritsar, who is currently living in Shivjot Apartment in Kharar. Khanna senior superintendent of police (SSP) Jyoti Yadav said the City 2 police station arrested Vicky near Prem Bhandari Park during a special checking on July 1. When frisked, the police recovered 10-gm narcotic powder from his possession. A case under Sections 22 (punishment for contravention in relation to psychotropic substances), 61 (confiscation of goods used for concealing illicit drugs or substances) and 85 of the NDPS Act was registered against the accused. 'During questioning, the accused told police that he procured narcotics from Sukhman Singh and supplied the same further at a higher price. Following the information provided by the accused, the police nominated Sukhman Singh in the FIR,'said the SSP. A trap was laid and Sukhman Singh was arrested from the main gate of Shivjot Apartment in Kharar when he turned up there in his car to deliver the consignment. The police recovered 1.5-kg ice drug and 1-kg opium from the car,' she added. Further, the SSP added that Sections 18 (punishment for contravention in relation to opium poppy and opium), 21, 61, 85 of the NDPS Act and Sections 111 (organised crime) of the BNS were added in the FIR. The police are questioning Sukhman Singh to know his forward and backward links. According to the SSP, Vicky is already facing trial in a drug peddling case while the police are scanning the past criminal record of Sukhman Singh.
