'We are seeing quick commerce as a good opportunity'

Cycle Pure Agarbathi, the flagship brand of Mysuru-based 77-year-old NR Group, is the biggest player in the incense stick market, which is estimated to be around Rs 8,000-10,000 crore. Its annual revenue, according to Tracxn, stood at Rs 1,150 crore in FY24. In an interaction with Uma Kannan, Cycle Pure Agarbathi MD and Managing Partner NR Group, Arjun Ranga, who is the third-generation entrepreneur, said digital presence is now extremely important and that prayer as an opportunity is bigger in digital and ecommerce. Edited excerpts:
Post-Covid, is there any change in the Agarbatti industry in terms of market and new players?
From about 2019 onwards, there has been a huge influx of new manufacturers, and unorganised players coming to the industry. Especially during Covid, when people were talking about the benefits of using Agarbatti and keeping the fragrance at home. There has been a sudden increase in unbranded players entering the market. There is an oversupply because of that right now. However, the increase in population and consumption have helped the growth. The increase in the number of temples, rising number of pujas and rituals and the increase of religious tourism have also contributed to the growth of the industry. We have also created exotic combinations of fragrances targeting some specific geographical regions, festivals and giving the customers their taste of preference under various brands, which has further helped in boosting the growth.
As an organised sector player, how do you see the proliferation of many unorganised players in the space?
We are the biggest player in the market as an organised brand. In the AC Nielsen's report, the market is estimated to be Rs 8000 crore, which also includes unorganised players. It is estimated that the market is about 60-70% organised and the rest of it is unorganised. In this dynamic, our market share is about 20% of the whole organised share. The Agarabatti industry has made representation to the government about proliferation of unorganised players, and the government has suggested the best way is to go for an Indian standard. We are working with the Bureau of Indian Standards to come up with the Agarbatti standard. We are working closely with BIS to launch it. It should be done in the next three months.
Do you have any plans to increase digital sales?
With increase in information and accessibility for customers, we saw a shift in the consumption pattern of consumers, where unlike the older times the first access point is not the temples. Today for consumers, point of sale becomes a priority. Today, a lot of customer discovery is happening online and digitally through either social media or the portals. Digital presence today is extremely important for customers to understand your product, understand your brand, and tell your brand story. Our discovery process has increased dramatically. If we were 5% on digital 10 years ago, today we are 50% on digital in terms of communication.
Do you think there is a growth opportunity in the e-commerce space?
Agarbatti has typically been a purchase item, when stock is finished. Quick commerce is showing promise, because Agarbatti is an impulse purchase. And the unit packs are small -- Rs 100 a month is enough for you to light Agarbatti for the whole month. We are seeing quick commerce as a good opportunity. E-commerce is the new big thing. Agarbatti is not a category, but a discovery. Services have increased the opportunity for us, and we have got into astro services. That is leading into puja. So, prayer as an opportunity is bigger in digital and e-commerce. I see the next 5 years as a huge opportunity for us as well as the company in that space. We have a brand called astropuja.com, and we see that as a big opportunity going forward.
What is the long-term vision of the group?
We are all a purpose-led brand. We believe in delivering hope. The long-term vision of the company is whenever anybody thinks of prayer or God, we need to be present either as a product or a service within an arm's reach.

The government's decision to boost research & development and employment generation, with a total bill of over Rs 2 lakh crore, is admirable in intent. But how it would realise its goals is a question that experts will ask. The Cabinet on Tuesday approved a Rs 2.07-lakh-crore outlay for a Research, Development, and Innovation (RDI) (RDI) Scheme to fund private sector innovations, along with an employment-linked incentive (ELI) scheme to create over 3.5 crore new jobs over the next two years. This is not the first time the government has announced grand plans to boost manufacturing, innovation, and employment. Similar schemes, such as the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme in recent years, although beneficial in specific sectors like electronics and pharmaceuticals, have not yet delivered a transformative impact across the broader manufacturing landscape. The gap between policy announcements and their tangible outcomes continues to be a concern. Manufacturing remains India's Achilles' heel. Despite years of policy pushes under campaigns like Make in India and PLI Schemes, the sector's share in GDP has largely stagnated around 15-17 per cent, far below the government's target of 25 per cent. More worryingly, even where there has been growth, it has often been in sectors that are capital-intensive rather than labor-intensive, thus failing to generate the volume of quality jobs needed to absorb India's vast and growing workforce. This structural challenge is compounded by issues such as poor infrastructure, complex regulatory frameworks, inconsistent policy implementation, and skill mismatches in the labor market. The government's RDI scheme, which seeks to fund private sector innovations, is a step in the right direction because it recognizes that sustainable economic growth must be driven by innovation, particularly in an increasingly knowledge-based global economy. India's investment in R&D as a percentage of GDP has historically lagged behind countries like China, the US, and even smaller Asian economies like South Korea. By directly supporting private sector innovation, the government seems to be moving towards creating an ecosystem where businesses can lead technological advancements rather than relying solely on public sector research bodies. Yet, the success of such a scheme will hinge on how effectively it is designed and implemented. Will the funds be disbursed in a timely, transparent manner? Will small and medium enterprises (SMEs), which are often the backbone of job creation, have adequate access to these incentives, or will the bulk of the benefits accrue to larger corporations with better lobbying power? How will the government ensure that the incentives lead to actual job creation rather than simply subsidizing existing operations? The ELI Scheme also raises similar concerns. The target of creating over 3.5 crore new jobs is ambitious, but previous efforts to incentivise job creation did not result in major success. The government has also not come up with a report of the earlier schemes. How, if at all, did they promote job creation? What lessons have been learnt from them? Employment generation in India today requires a parallel focus on skill development. Even if manufacturing units expand, a shortage of adequately skilled workers may limit the sector's growth potential. The government's skill development initiatives must therefore be closely aligned with the sectors targeted. We only hope that the government has taken cognisance of the fact that large allocations do not automatically translate into measurable outcomes.

Mumbai: The Indian rupee touched its strongest level in a month on Thursday, amid increasing optimism that the India-US trade deal would happen in the next 48 hours and also owing to dollar sales from foreign banks , traders said. The rupee closed 39 paisa stronger at 85.31 per dollar, up from its previous close of 85.70 to $1, LSEG data showed. The rupee had appreciated to 85.18 to $1 during the day, its best level since late May, but likely intervention from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) capped excess appreciation in the currency. Asian currencies mostly rose, while the dollar index remained steady at 96.8, ahead of US non-farm payroll data for cues on the future path of the Federal Reserve policy rates. "Once the rupee appreciated past 85.45 to $1 levels, stop losses were triggered for many institutions, aiding the rupee. Foreign inflows were also seen on Thursday," a trader from a private sector bank said on condition of anonymity. The rupee traded in the range of 85.64 and 85.18 to $1 on Thursday. "Positive sentiments on trade deal allowed rupee to trade up to 85.18 to $1, where RBI likely bought dollars, taking the currency towards 85.35 to $1 levels. Today (on Thursday) the market was heavily long on the rupee," said Anil Bhansali, head of treasury at Finrex Treasury Advisors. ETtech Banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI), the biggest sectoral purchaser of Indian technology solutions for decades, is expected to provide the much-needed ballast to a $280-billion industry that has recently struggled to boost its topline in a business climate rocked by AI-induced layoffs, towering tariff hurdles, and potentially inflationary geopolitical this backdrop, Wall Street and London City banks have fared relatively better. With banks and financiers of all description taking to AI, the sector is witnessing an increase in payments modernisation, asset servicing, and platform consolidation, boosting the demand for technology inputs, said experts.'The BFSI vertical continues to be a strategic growth driver for Infosys . We're seeing strong client interest in areas like payments modernisation, asset servicing, and platform consolidation, especially as financial institutions look to simplify operations, enhance customer experience while also delivering on new experiences,' said Dennis Gada, executive vice president and global head of BFS at macroeconomic environment is playing a significant role in shaping demand. We think a benign tariff outlook may lead to an improvement in discretionary spend in the short term (read 2QFY26F),' the report industry experts have seen select green shoots in BFSI to have persisted, especially in areas of digital banking and regulatory technology.A June report on State of the agentic AI market from technology research and advisory firm ISG stated that BFSI continues to be the beacon for AI innovation with 30% of use cases / POCs (proof of concepts). 'This is driven by the industry's rich structured and unstructured data, which is the first step to successful adoption of agentic AI in critical workflows…As agentic AI picked up pace over the past two quarters, about 70% of agentic AI use cases are concentrated in just three industries: BFSI, retail, and manufacturing.'Bengaluru-headquartered India's second largest IT major Infosys, which has a 28.4% share of BFSI revenue, is working with clients to modernise their technology foundations and transform their core operations and processes.'We are seeing strong momentum in areas like payments, where cloud-native platforms are enabling real-time processing, faster settlement, and improved efficiencies in the cost to deliver and serve. In core banking, many institutions are adopting an approach to progressively modernise their systems by using API architectural solutions with their legacy platforms while gradually migrating key modules, like lending and deposits, to fully digital modern environments. This allows them to deliver operational, and experience benefits progressively as they undertake their modernisation programs,' Gada pointed to him, regulatory shifts, competitive pressures, increasing costs, customer expectations and the market level focus to launch AI-enabled services are pressing financial institutions to act with urgency.'It's no longer just a technology upgrade or a digital program – it's a strategic imperative to adopt AI for immediate and long-term business benefits. AI and cloud are being adopted, not as isolated tools, but as integrated levers to transform end-to-end processes and deliver business outcomes at scale.'
